Watches & Warnings

Lake Effect Snow Warning, Wind Chill Watch
Issued: 3:35 PM EST Feb. 11, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Lake effect snow warning in effect from 4 PM Friday to 7 am
EST Saturday...
... Wind chill watch remains in effect from late Friday night
through Sunday morning...

The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a lake effect
snow warning... which is in effect from 4 PM Friday to 7 am EST
Saturday. The lake effect snow watch is no longer in effect.

* Locations... southern Erie County and Wyoming County.

* Timing... the lake effect snow warning is in effect from late
Friday afternoon through early Saturday morning. The wind
chill watch is in effect from late Friday night through late
Sunday morning.

* Accumulations... up to 2 inches Friday... 3 to 5 inches Friday
night... and 1 to 2 inches Saturday... leading to storm totals
of 4 to 8 inches in the most persistent lake snows.

* Winds... northwest 15 to 25 mph late Friday and Friday night.

* Visibilities... as low as a quarter mile at times.

* Temperatures... lows zero to 5 below Friday night. Highs 5 below
to 5 above zero Saturday. Lows 10 below to 15 below zero
Saturday night.

* Wind chill values... as low as 35 below late Friday night and
Saturday.

* Impacts... lake effect snow and blowing snow may result in
difficult travel at times with snow covered roads and greatly
reduced visibilities. Wind chills will reach dangerous levels.
Frigid temperatures have the potential to result in frozen
pipes... frostbite and hypothermia.

* Forecaster confidence... forecaster confidence in the wind
chill watch is medium. Warmer waters of Lake Erie may hold wind
chills to advisory criteria.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

In lake effect snow the weather can vary from locally heavy snow
in narrow bands to clear skies just a few miles away. If you will
be traveling across the region be prepared for rapid changes in
Road and visibility conditions.

A wind chill watch is issued when strong winds will combine with
cold temperatures to create dangerously cold conditions for
exposed skin. The wind will make it feel like it is 15 degrees
below zero or colder for a period of several hours. If you will
be outdoors use common sense and dress warmly... making sure that
all exposed skin is covered. If possible... avoid prolonged
exposure to the cold to prevent frostbite and hypothermia.

If you lose power and plan on running a generator... make sure
that the generator is located outdoors and is properly
ventilated. Space heaters should also be properly ventilated and
used only if they are operating properly. Make sure snow does not
block exhausts and fresh air intakes for high efficiency furnaces
and water heaters.
