Watches & Warnings

Lake Effect Snow Warning, Wind Chill Watch
Issued: 9:56 PM EST Feb. 11, 2016 – National Weather Service

1 am EST Saturday...
... Wind chill watch remains in effect from late Friday night
through Sunday morning...

* locations... Jefferson and northern Lewis counties.

* Timing... the lake effect snow warning is in effect from late
tonight through overnight Friday night. The wind chill watch
is in effect from late Friday night through late Sunday
morning.

* Accumulations... up to 2 inches overnight... 6 to 12 inches
Friday... and 5 to 9 inches Friday night... leading to storm
totals of 2 feet or more in the most persistent lake snows.

* Winds... west 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.

* Visibilities... as low as a quarter mile at times.

* Temperatures... lows 5 below to 10 below zero Friday night. Highs
5 below to 10 below zero Saturday. Lows 20 below to 25 below
zero Saturday night.

* Wind chill values... as low as 45 below Friday night through
Sunday morning.

* Impacts... lake effect snow may result in difficult travel at
times with snow covered roads and greatly reduced
visibilities. Wind chills will reach dangerous levels. Frigid
temperatures have the potential to result in frozen pipes...
frostbite and hypothermia.

* Forecaster confidence... forecaster confidence in the wind
chill watch is high.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

In lake effect snow the weather can vary from locally heavy snow
in narrow bands to clear skies just a few miles away. If you will
be traveling across the region be prepared for rapid changes in
Road and visibility conditions.

A wind chill watch is issued when strong winds will combine with
cold temperatures to create dangerously cold conditions for
exposed skin. The wind will make it feel like it is 15 degrees
below zero or colder for a period of several hours. If you will
be outdoors use common sense and dress warmly... making sure that
all exposed skin is covered. If possible... avoid prolonged
exposure to the cold to prevent frostbite and hypothermia.

If you lose power and plan on running a generator... make sure
that the generator is located outdoors and is properly
ventilated. Space heaters should also be properly ventilated and
used only if they are operating properly. Make sure snow does not
block exhausts and fresh air intakes for high efficiency furnaces
and water heaters.
