Weather Underground Forecast for Thursday, May 23, 2013. A strong, large storm will continue making its way through the eastern third of the country on Thursday, producing more, active weather east of the Mississippi Valley. While the active weather is not likely to produce the severe thunderstorms that have greeted the country over the past several days, scattered thunderstorms will be likely, especially in the Southeast. In addition, moderate to occasionally heavy rain will move through the Northeast, followed by cool showers in the Ohio Valley and Upper Midwest.

Meanwhile, some moisture pushing into the Southern Plains could possibly instigate some severe thunderstorms in northern Texas and western Oklahoma. Due to this possibility, the Storm Prediction Center has issued a slight risk of severe weather in the area for Thursday. This means residents in the area should prepare as if severe weather will develop, making any necessary preparations to protect life and property.

Also, a seasonably strong low pressure system will linger over the Pacific Northwest today, allowing wet weather to continue in the area. While rain will be the overwhelming precipitation due to this storm, a few snow showers will be possible in the higher elevations of the Cascades.

Additionally, rain will also spread as far east as central Montana.

The Northeast will rise into the 70s and 80s, while the Southeast will see temperatures in the 80s and 90s. The Southern Plains will rise into the 80s and 90s, while the Southwest will see similar temperatures.

Rockland County in southeast New York...
Putnam County in southeast New York...

* until 230 PM EDT...

* at 1257 PM EDT... National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated
flash flooding from thunderstorms along a line extending from
Yorktown Heights to Hawthorne... or along a line extending from
Peekskill to Paramus... moving northeast at 10 mph.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams... urban areas... highways... streets and underpasses
as well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.

Do not underestimate the power of flood waters. Only a few inches of
rapidly flowing water can quickly carry away your vehicle.

To report flooding... have the nearest law enforcement agency relay
your report to the National Weather Service forecast office in Upton
NY.

Putnam County in southeast New York...
Westchester County in southeast New York...
Fairfield County in southern Connecticut...

* until 415 PM EDT...

* at 113 PM EDT National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated
numerous heavy showers and thunderstorms developing across the
area and tracking to the northeast. Additional activity is
expected to develop across this same area through the afternoon.
Rainfall rates will exceed one inch per hour in the heaviest
storms. As a result... Urban and Small Stream flooding can be
expected across the area.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. Most flooding deaths occur in automobiles. Turn around and
find another Route.

Excessive runoff from this storm will cause flooding of urban
areas... highways... streets and underpasses as well as other drainage
areas and low lying spots.

Be prepared to take action if the flooding threat increases... or a
warning is issued.
