Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Tuesday, May 21, 2013.

After a devastating severe weather day in the Plains on Monday, severe weather is expected to fire up again across the nation's mid-section again on Tuesday.

The nearly stationary low over the Northern Plains will gradually weaken as it shifts eastward into the Midwest on Tuesday, while the system's associated cold front trails southwestward from the low across the Mid-Mississippi Valley through the Southern Plains. Favorable energy and conditions ahead of the cold front combined with the moisture laden conditions of the nation's mid-section will set the stage for multiple clusters of thunderstorms to develop from the Midwest into the Ozarks and the Southern Plains. Portions of northeastern Texas, extreme southeastern Oklahoma, central and southern Arkansas, and northwestern Louisiana are at moderate risk of severe thunderstorm activity as environmental conditions remain favorable for tornadoes, damaging wind gusts, and very large hail. Areas surrounding this moderate risk region from the parts of central and eastern Texas into the Upper Great Lakes are at slight risk of severe thunderstorm development with hail, damaging wind gusts, and isolated tornadoes.

Meanwhile, areas of heavy rain and widely scattered showers will continue near the low in the Northern Plains and Upper Mississippi Valley and near and to the north of a nearly stationary frontal boundary extending out ahead of the system from the Great Lakes into the Northeast. Continued precipitation in already saturated areas of the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest will maintain flood concerns from parts of North Dakota into northern Wisconsin.

Elsewhere, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to persist in the Mid-Atlantic and southeastern corner of the nation.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 2:05 PM EDT on May 21, 2013

The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a

* Severe Thunderstorm Watch for portions of
northern Connecticut
western and central Massachusetts
southern New Hampshire
northern Rhode Island

* effective this Tuesday afternoon and evening from 205 PM until
900 PM EDT.

* Primary threats include...
several large hail events with a few very large hail events to 2
    inches in diameter possible
several damaging wind gusts to 70 mph possible

The Severe Thunderstorm Watch area is approximately along and 40
statute miles north and south of a line from 15 miles west of
Westfield Massachusetts to 30 miles north northeast of Providence
Rhode Island. For a complete depiction of the watch see the
associated watch outline update (wous64 kwns wou4).

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Remember... a Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are
favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch
area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for
threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements
and possible warnings. Severe thunderstorms can and occasionally
do produce tornadoes.

Other watch information... continue... ww 201... ww 202... ww 203...

Discussion... at least scattered vigorous thunderstorm development is
expected across parts of southern New England this
afternoon... within the warm sector of a weak frontal wave. Fairly
steep mid-level lapse rates are contributing to sizable cape... in
the presence of modestly strong deep layer shear beneath 30-40 kt
westnorthwesterly 500 mb flow. Supercell structures appear
possible... contributing to the risk for severe hail and potentially
damaging wind gusts.

Aviation... a few severe thunderstorms with hail surface and aloft
to 2 inches. Extreme turbulence and surface wind gusts to 60
knots. A few cumulonimbi with maximum tops to 500. Mean storm
motion vector 29025.

Special Weather Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 12:37 PM EDT on May 21, 2013

... Strong to possibly severe thunderstorms possible this
afternoon across much of southern New England...

A cold front moving south from central New England will provide
the focus for scattered thunderstorms to develop this afternoon.

Some of the storms may produce strong damaging wind gusts and
hail... in addition to lightning and heavy rainfall.

Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop between 1 PM and
4 PM across most of Massachusetts... northern Connecticut and
northern Rhode Island... especially near the Mass Pike.

If you have outdoor plans... have a safe place to go to if
thunderstorms approach... such as a vehicle or inside a home or
building. Remember... if you can hear thunder you are close
enough to be struck by lightning.

Stay tuned to NOAA all hazards radio or your local media for
updated information.
