... Flood Watch in effect for the taiya river through Friday
afternoon...

The National Weather Service in Juneau has issued a

* Flood Watch for a portion of AK... including Taiya Inlet... and
Klondike Highway.

* Through Friday afternoon

* as of Thursday afternoon... 0.75 inches of rain has fallen on The
Klondike Highway with another inch expected through Friday. The
taiya river is currently at 15.6 feet and rising between 1 to 2
inches per hour. The river is expected to continue rising and
crest around 16.7 feet Friday morning. Minor flood stage is 16.5
feet.

* Impacts are expected along the chilkoot trail. At 16.1 feet the
chilkoot trail begins to inundate with water. At 16.8 feet there
is knee to thigh deep water at mile 2.7 of the chilkoot trail.

... Moderate to heavy rain continuing for the Panhandle into Friday
night...

A rather moist front is moving through the Panhandle today and will
then stall over the southern Panhandle Thursday night into Friday
night. The heavier rain has started across the northern Panhandle
with around half an inch to 1.5 inches of rain expected through late
tonight as the front moves through. The southern Panhandle will
start seeing the heavier rain this evening and will see upwards of 2
to 4 inches of rain total through Friday night as the front stalls
over the area.

Area rivers and streams will again be on the rise through Friday
afternoon but none of the gaged rivers are expected to flood. Other
smaller creeks and streams may also rise to near bankfull Thursday
and Friday especially across the southern Panhandle.

A potent low pressure system and associated weather front will move
into the Panhandle late Friday and into Saturday. This will bring
another period of moderate to heavy rainfall and gusty winds to
Southeast Alaska. Total rainfall amounts will range from 1 to 3
inches. Southerly winds will increase Friday night and Saturday
with gusts of 30 to 45 mph over much of the area. Winds are
expected to begin to subside later Saturday and Sunday.

Moderate to heavy rainfall combined with strong winds will result
in an increased risk of mudslides. Area rivers... creeks and streams
will also rise as a result. Antecedent conditions combined with
significant rainfall could result in minor flooding.
