Watches & Warnings

Wind Chill Warning, Lake Effect Snow Advisory
Issued: 3:47 PM EST Feb. 12, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Lake effect Snow Advisory remains in effect until 7 am EST
Saturday...
... Wind chill warning remains in effect from 5 am Saturday to
10 am EST Sunday...

* locations... Monroe... Wayne... and northern Cayuga counties.

* Timing... the lake effect Snow Advisory is in effect from late
this afternoon through early Saturday morning. The wind chill
warning is in effect from late tonight through late Sunday
morning.

* Accumulations... 3 to 6 inches tonight... and 1 to 3 inches
Saturday... leading to storm totals of 6 to 12 inches in the most
persistent lake snows.

* Winds... northwest 20 to 30 mph.

* Visibilities... near zero at times this evening.

* Temperatures... in the lower 20s today. Lows around zero
tonight. Highs zero to 5 above Saturday. Lows 5 below to 10
below zero Saturday night. Between zero and 10 below Sunday.

* Wind chill values... as low as 25 below.

* Impacts... an Arctic front will rapidly drop south across Lake
Ontario late this afternoon and this evening. This is expected
to result in a snow squall that will generate rapidly falling
visibilities in snow along with strong winds and blowing snow.
This will create a period of hazardous travel conditions tonight.
In addition... wind chills and temperatures will reach
dangerously cold levels. The frigid conditions could result in
frozen pipes... and will quickly lead to frostbite and
hypothermia if you are not properly dressed.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A wind chill warning is issued when a strong wind will combine
with cold temperatures to create dangerously cold conditions for
exposed skin. The wind will make it feel like it is 25 degrees
below zero or colder for several hours. Those planning to venture
outdoors should use common sense and dress warmly.

In lake effect snow the weather can vary from locally heavy snow
in narrow bands to clear skies just a few miles away. If you will
be traveling across the region be prepared for rapid changes in
Road and visibility conditions.

If you lose power and plan on running a generator... make sure
that the generator is located outdoors and is properly
ventilated. Space heaters should also be properly ventilated and
used only if they are operating properly. Make sure snow does not
block exhausts and fresh air intakes for high efficiency furnaces
and water heaters.
