1940 -- 75 years ago: Damage estimated at $1,500 was caused by fire this morning at a recently remodeled residence at 2413 12th St.
1965 -- 50 years ago: A Freedoms Foundation Award has been presented to Deere & Co. for its movie "Give Us This Day," a film telling how the United States has become the best fed and best clothed nation in history. Deere & Co. bought out "Give Us this Day" in 1964 as part of its program opening its new Administrative Center. The film was designed to show modern agricultural techniques used by the American farmers.
1990 -- 25 years ago: The Blackhawk Township Fire Department was called to a mobile home fire in Milan Monday afternoon, but they arrived too late to save the pot roast. Black Hawk fire Protection District Chief Ken Wilson said the department was called to a trailer fire at 404 16th St. at about 2:30 p.m., when a pot roast caught fire while it was on the stove and started filling the home with smoke. The roast was the only item in the house to suffer severe damage, Mr. Wilson said. He said firefighters did not need to use any equipment to put the fire out. I shut the burner off and I took the pot outside.
