Today is Tuesday, June 28, the 180th day of 2016. There are 186 days left in the year.
1866 -- 150 years ago: The oil excitement in the upper end of this county is still on the increase, and another company, called the LeClaire Oil and Coal Mining Co., has been formed.
1891 -- 125 years ago: Elmore Stafford, son of M.W. Stafford, sustained a severe fall while crossing 4th Avenue, badly lacerating his left leg.
1916 -- 100 years ago: Physical director Clevett and Mrs. Clevett and assistant general secretary Bliss and Mrs. Bliss left for Lake Geneva to attend the YMCA summer school.
1941 -- 75 years ago: The Moline City Council approved a curb and gutter project and also the surfacing of streets in the Moline Housing Corp.'s 4th Street addition.
1966 -- 50 years ago: The Rock Island Police Department is conducting a three-day count of vehicles going to and from Rock Island via the Rock Island Arsenal Viaduct. Results will give Rock Island officials an idea of the additional traffic the city and the Rock Island Centennial Bridge can expect when the viaduct is closed.
1991 -- 25 years ago: Can it really have been 20 years since a brash bunch of amateurs declared themselves the Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Society and decided against all advice and common sense to stage the first Bix jazz festival in Davenport's LeClaire Park?
