Watches & Warnings

Winter Storm Warning, Winter Storm Watch
Issued: 4:17 AM EST Feb. 8, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Winter Storm Warning in effect until 7 am EST Tuesday...
... Winter Storm Watch now in effect from Tuesday morning through
Thursday morning...

The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued
a Winter Storm Warning for snow... which is in effect until 7 am
EST Tuesday. The Winter Weather Advisory is no longer in effect
for this area.

* Locations... the southern and central North Carolina mountains
near the Tennessee border.

* Hazards... periods of snow and blowing snow through tonight.
Also... roads that become wet this afternoon may freeze
overnight... causing slippery conditions. Accumulating
snowfall will likely continue through Wednesday night. In
addition... northwest winds combined with temperatures in the
single digits to low teens may yield wind chill values between
minus 5 to minus 15 Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

* Timing... snow will continue through tonight... with accumulation
occurring most rapidly this afternoon and evening.
However... deep moisture and strengthening northwest winds will
still produce light snow showers at times from Tuesday morning
through Wednesday night.

* Accumulations... snow accumulation of generally 2 to 5
inches... with the greatest accumulation potential being on
western facing slopes. Areas along the Tennessee border may see
up to 6 inches by Tuesday morning.

* Impacts... snow and snow packed roads will make travel
dangerous. Snow accumulation and strong gusty winds could result
in scattered power outages and downed trees.

* Temperatures... falling into the teens by early Tuesday morning.

* Winds... northwest 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow...
sleet... and ice are expected or occurring. Strong winds are also
possible. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible.
