Watches & Warnings

Winter Storm Warning, Wind Chill Advisory
Issued: 9:45 PM EST Feb. 8, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Winter Storm Warning in effect until 7 am EST Tuesday...
... Wind Chill Advisory remains in effect from 7 PM Tuesday to
noon EST Wednesday above 3500 feet...

The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued
a Winter Storm Warning for snow... which is in effect until 7 am
EST Tuesday. The Winter Weather Advisory is no longer in effect.

* Locations... Avery County in North Carolina.

* Hazards... periods of snow and blowing snow through tonight. In
addition... northwest winds combined with temperatures in the
single digits will result in wind chill values of 5 to 15 below
zero in elevations above 3500 feet Tuesday night.

* Timing... snow showers will occur tonight through at least
Tuesday... with the greatest potential for accumulation during
this evening. Deep moisture and strengthening northwest winds
will still produce light snow showers at times through Wednesday
night. Wind chill values will fall below 5 degrees below zero
Tuesday evening across the high elevations... and continue
through Wednesday morning.

* Accumulations... additional snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches
through daybreak Tuesday.

* Impacts... snow and snow packed roads will make travel dangerous.
Snow accumulation and strong gusty winds could result in a few
downed trees. Wind chill values of less than 5 degrees below
zero will make it dangerous to be outside across the high
elevations Tuesday night.

* Temperatures... 7 to 27 above.

* Winds... northwest 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.

* Wind chill values... as low as 13 below due to temperatures 7 to
17 above... and winds northwest 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35
mph.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow...
sleet... and ice are expected or occurring. Strong winds are also
possible. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible.

A Wind Chill Advisory means that very cold air and strong winds
will combine to generate low wind chills. This will result in
frost bite and lead to hypothermia if precautions are not taken.
If you must venture outdoors... make sure you wear a hat and
gloves.
