Watches & Warnings

Winter Storm Warning
Issued: 4:31 AM EST Feb. 8, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 PM EST this
evening...

* locations... Suffolk County.

* Hazard types... heavy snow... strong winds... and blowing and
drifting snow.

* Accumulations... snow accumulation of 4 to 8 inches.

* Winds... northeast 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.

* Temperatures... in the lower 30s.

* Visibilities... one quarter mile or less at times.

* Timing... snow will develop before daybreak... and may be mixed
with rain at the very onset. The heaviest snow will fall from
the morning commute into early this afternoon.

* Impacts... the combination of strong winds and heavy wet snow
will bring down tree limbs and power lines. Hazardous travel
conditions are expected due to greatly reduced visibilities and
significant snow accumulations. Near blizzard conditions are
expected... especially out on The Forks and on Fishers Island.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather
conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of snow
are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an
emergency. If you must travel... keep an extra flashlight... food...
and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

High Surf Advisory, Coastal Flood Advisory
Issued: 4:50 AM EST Feb. 8, 2016 – National Weather Service

... High surf advisory remains in effect until 7 am EST Tuesday...
... Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 11 am EST this
morning...

* locations... coastal locations along the South Shore of Suffolk
counties and along Peconic and gardiners bays.

* Tidal departures... 2 to 2 1/2 feet above astronomical tides.

* Timing... minor coastal flooding expected for this morning/S
high tide cycle... and possibly for tonight/S high tide
cycle.

* Beach impacts... elevated water levels and large breaking waves
will likely result in areas of dune toe erosion and localized
overwashes for the Atlantic Ocean beaches. Beach erosion also
possible along the north facing shorelines adjacent to
gardiners bays.

* Coastal flood impacts... flooding of the most vulnerable shore
roads and/or properties due to height of storm tide or wave
splashover. Majority of roads remain passable. There is no
significant threat to life and any impact on property is
minimal.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area... producing rip currents and localized beach
erosion.

A coastal Flood Advisory indicates that onshore winds and tides
will combine to generate flooding of low areas along the shore.
