Areal Flood Watch, Areal Flood Advisory
Statement as of 3:19 PM PDT on May 22, 2017

... Flood Watch remains in effect through Wednesday evening...

The Flood Watch continues for

* portions of California and western Nevada, including the
following areas, in California, greater Lake Tahoe area,
Lassen-eastern Plumas-eastern Sierra counties, and Mono
County. In western Nevada, greater Lake Tahoe area and greater
Reno-Carson City-Minden area.

* Through Wednesday evening

* warming temperatures will accelerate snowpack melt across the
eastern Sierra through early week. Best estimates for flows
this week coming out of unregulated eastern Sierra creeks and
streams are likely to be 2-2.5 times current flows with
smaller creeks likely to see 3 times current flows.

* Daily peak flows on small creeks and streams typically occur
during the evening and overnight hours.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Excessive runoff may also generate rock and mud slides in steep
terrain. Persons living along small creeks and streams should
monitor the latest weather information at weather.Gov/Reno and be
prepared to take action should flooding occur.

1208 PM PDT sun may 21 2017

... The flood advisory for snowmelt remains in effect until 145 PM PDT
Thursday for alpine and Douglas counties...

* minor flooding impacts will begin in parts of the Carson Valley
late Tuesday and continue through Thursday.

* Warming temperatures will cause increased snowmelt this week. This
increased snowmelt will raise flows in both the East Fork Carson
and West Fork Carson rivers.

* The increased flows will result in minor flooding along portions
of the West Fork Carson below Woodfords and into the Carson
Valley. This flooding will be confined mainly to farm and ranch
lands near the river, but a few rural roads could be impacted.

* Flows are likely to be highest during the overnight hours before
falling during the morning.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A flood advisory means river or stream flows are elevated, or ponding
of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent.

1145 am PDT Thu may 18 2017

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a

* flood advisory for...
snowmelt in...
Placer County in central California...
Nevada County in northern California...

* until 1130 am PDT Tuesday

* high flows will return to the upper portions of the Truckee River
from Tahoe City downstream to the confluence with the little
Truckee River below Boca Reservoir. These increased flows are a
combination of increased releases from Lake Tahoe and expected
increased snowmelt due to higher temperatures this weekend and
early next week.

* These high flows are likely to last into the Memorial Day weekend.
Higher flows are likely farther downstream by the middle of next
week, and the advisory will likely need to be extended into the
Reno-Sparks area by Monday or Tuesday of next week.

* Impacts... minor flooding will cover sections of the bike path
along Highway 89. Some backyards and basements along the river
near Highway 89 may be inundated by the high flows. Campgrounds
along Highway 89 may be impacted by these higher flows as well.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A flood advisory means river or stream flows are elevated, or ponding
of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent.

Special Statement
Statement as of 3:43 PM PDT on May 22, 2017

... Snowmelt flooding concerns increase over the eastern Sierra
and western Nevada...

With temperatures rising well above normal through Wednesday,
snowmelt will accelerate across the eastern Sierra. The increase
in snowmelt will cause daily rises in many small streams from Mono
County north through the northern Sierra. Snowmelt flow typically
peaks in smaller streams late in the evening or overnight.
Farther downstream flows will continue to increase through next
week as the smaller streams add water to the main rivers.

Small streams, and Walker, Carson, and Truckee River flooding
summary:

* on the west Walker River, minor flooding is expected from the
Walker River canyon into Antelope Valley and high flows through
Smith Valley and downstream through Wilson Canyon. There is
minor flooding occurring just below Wilson Canyon.

* On the east Walker River, minor flooding is ongoing and
expected to continue from just above strosnider ditch to the
confluence with the west Walker.

* The Walker River through Mason Valley and Yerington is expected
to crest just below moderate flood stage. Minor flood stage
will be reached Wednesday morning and flow will peak out late
Friday.

* No flooding is expected below Weber Reservoir at this time.

* Small streams draining the eastern Sierra could see flows in
excess of 2 to 3 times their current flows causing flooding
near the streams from southern Mono County north through the
Tahoe basin and into parts of Sierra and Plumas counties.

* The upper parts of the Carson River... including the southwest
Carson Valley... are likely to experience minor flooding of farm
and ranch lands.

* The Truckee River will likely see minor flooding below Lake
Tahoe to Truckee along Highway 89 and nearby areas. This is
likely to be confined to areas immediately adjacent to the river
with impacts confined to campgrounds and bike trails.
