Sea Lions
Posted by: ycd0108, 4:49 AM GMT on February 26, 2013 +1
That's Tloml and grandson staring at the Sea Lions bitching at each other. We ran up Island and stopped there to see what all the kerfufell was about. The male Sea Lions stay together and wait around these parts till the herring run comes then they go out to meet the ladies. Thar's a bit o' "Blood on the saddle" as they vie for space on the breakwater and a fair bit of noise.
I got a bit of video with sound but I do not do Youtube except to watch.

Can't keep my finger out of my best pictures. Sea lion males in the background are the main roadside attraction

I see you got your shadow in the picture, too! :' ) Looks like you had some nice weather for the trip!

So I'm assuming the ledge the sea lions are on serves the same purpose as a bar does for people? :' )

Hey Ylee:
Mas o menos. I don't know much about Sea Lion behaviour 'cause we only get the males here.
Good to see you back here.
Tloml is adamant that I have a bath RIGHT NOW! So I'll be back
Clean.

I'm back shaved and (semi) clean. It does not mean that much to me but Tloml seems to require this type of behavior.
She says it's because she has to sleep beside me and I happen to be an oaf.

Ah...the sea lion smell is gone!

Good that you got to spend quality time with the grandson. Didn't get to spend a lot of time with my mom's father until I was grown, but I remember the times we did go fishing and stuff.

My dad's father died when I was very young. I really only remember him taking me to see the mermaids.

Never had anything to do with Grampas myself - they were both gone before I arrived. Grandson and grand daughters are such special possessions I want to keep them all totally safe and sound.
But they have a life to lead which has a small portion to do with me. I'm just:

Happy to be here today

Read the latest Monbiot: there's no underestimating the stupidity of lawyers, is there? :' )

Not looking forward to being a grandpa yet, as I'd like a breather after he kids get out of the house! :' )

Looks like you had a nice outing and the weather even cooperated. Can't ask for more than that at this time of year.

Afternoon BriarCraft:
I think we had two days that were pretty nice and two that were blustery, cold and wet.
Grandson and I got to our site on the beach at about 5:00 PM and the South East wind waves were fetching maybe 50 miles to our front wheels. Tops of the breakers were flying spray. Next morning the wind swung to the North and blew away the clouds and rain but it was still a bit nippy watching the Sea Lions barking and gnashing at each other.
Thanks for the comments on the photos. I recorded a video with the sound of the Sea Lions and I'm watching your blog for hints regarding uploading videos. I'm kinda leery of Facebook and Youtube and downright lazy to boot. I would not be surprised to see someone else upload because there were a few sophisticated cameras set up.

If I would have know Grandkids were so much fun - I would have skipped the kids and went straight to G-Kids. Just found out the 6th is on the way by my 43 yr old daughter-scary!

Hey "Y" thanks for visiting my "fishless" Blog

Good one "Y" - that's better than Chocolate 'cept on ice cream - ALTHOUGH - Right now at Red Robin they are featuring a Guinness Chocolate Shake - first few swallows aren't bad, then downhill....

Reno:
If I had to choose the things to give up humor and beer would be near the bottom of the list. Along with eyesight so I can see the photos you and others post and read the comments and blogs.
I'm lately wondering about how much time and interest I spend on blogs here and there. How did I survive before this?
Oh yeah, people used to come over for coffee and chat - now I (and they too, I guess) wander about the internet finding interesting links and reading and posting.
Keeps us off the streets.

Buddy came out to use the table saw. He went to Mongolia to teach after we went to RSA with the same outfit: VSO.
When he asked us about "Humanitarian Aid work" we had to say:
"You go down there, General!"
(Little Big Man played by Dustin Hoffman telling Custer the Indians were waiting for him at Little Big Horn).
Of course Buddy had a good time in Mongolia as we had had in a couple of other countries - The locals love you and honor you.
I don't get that treatment around here so:
"I'm goin' back out 'fore the rain starts a fallin'.
And I'll walk to the depths of the deepest dark forest.
Where the people are many and their hands are all empty.
It's a Hard Rain gonna fall."
Bob Dylan as best I can transcribe.

Oops:
Almost fell off the page.
Brightest sunny morning in some time. 5C. but there is still frost on the lawn.
What is going on around here?
Plapman and Shoreacres say they are taking a break and Patrap has been Awol for some time.
I'm supposed to be making breakies so we can check out the boat and the cabin. There is a problem with the battery bank on the solar system there. I'll take the multi meter and see if it's just one of the four Trojan golf cart batteries or they are all kaput.
Our favourite electrician is sending pretty photos from Mexico so I'll have to DIY it this time. Should'a paid more attention when he wired the bank up.
Even a "dead" deep cycle battery has a fair bit of Zap in it and each one of four must weigh 50 pounds. Not really looking forward to bringing them back here to charge them but maybe the problem is that there has not been much insolation for a few months. Just hoping that when I get there the system will happy and humming away.

I haven't gone anywhere, yet! :) Just home, where I usually have enough to do to keep me out of trouble!

Good luck on the battery troubleshooting; I'm no electrician, but I know enough to know it could be anything.... :' )

Ylee:
I checked the battery voltages and got 5.8, 3.6, 7.6 and 2.2 volts respectively. By the way that was with incoming 5 amps at just over 10 V from the solar panels and no load. I'm pretty sure the lower voltage bats are dead but maybe the 5.8 and be salvaged. I stared at the wiring and made a diagram but could not figure it out till we were driving home:
The system is wired to provide 12 Volt output from four 6 V batteries. That means pairs of them are wired in series to produce 12 V and then the two pairs are wired in parallel for greater capacity. Now that I've gotten a handle on it (my last electrical course was in 1967 or so)I could wire the two higher voltage bats in series and bring the dead ones back here to either revive or recycle them. A better plan is to purchase four new bats and copy the existing wiring. I should email my electrician in Mexico first, I guess.
It was a beautiful day with a stiff North West wind so the boat ride over was bumpy. The main thing I worry about with choppy conditions is that it is harder to spot flotsam and I've fixed enough props to last a lifetime already. Broke the drive leg right off once going sideyways over a log in the trough of a wave. I took a few photos and will take a look at them to see if they are worth uploading.
