Best stable 'scope I have seen. At some point I think we had 270x with the Barlow 3x 90 eye piece. 3 1/2" reflector.
She's a bit dusty now and the silvering is fading on the mirrors - spiders made webs in the tube over the years.
Daughter gave me a fairly expensive telescope for my 65 but I found it too jumpy to focus on anything star like. This thing weighs in at about 40 pounds and does not jump around if you place it on a decent platform.
Da' had an iron stand for it and he would call the family out to see Andromeda Galaxy or some double star in the handle of the "Ursa Major" or whatever he was focused on.
It was always cold when it was clear but he should'a seen that image from the Hubble.

First star I see tonight...
Wait, where did all that sky glow come from?
What stars?
Something that will always bring back memories of family time spent together!
Nice!
Ylee: He bought the mirrors, eyepiece and lenses from Edmund Scientific. The laquered cardboard tube came from an ammunition case from WW11 Navy Surplus - Powder case for a 5" cannon - and the mount is plywood vertical circle clutch with horizontal circle driven by a worm gear and a big counter weight.
Bogon: "where did all that sky glow come from?" According to what I've read it came from the "Big Bang" but I'm more of a "Steady State" type.
Rob: Some years ago I think I put up an entry here about my nephew taking an interest in the telescope parts I had stored (and forgotten about) to get the mirrors re-silvered. We decided to put his grandpa's telescope back together and he figured out how to increase friction on the vertical circle clutch with some big circlamps I had in the (what does Tony call it?) hoard?
"There be Dragons!"
I'm out'a smokes and Gunther hasn't shown up.
The sky glow I'm talking about is from all the street lights and neon in my city. Maybe out on your island that's not such a problem.
We too have those glows over the local towns but since we are pretty well surrounded with tall second growth forest the glows are mostly below the tree tops. That means any stars low on the horizon are blocked as well.
If we look at it from a very long term perspective the glows in the sky are still the result of the grand processes that allowed us to be here to see them, eh.
I certainly do appreciate the bits and pieces I have retained from older generations and friends who no longer needed the item 'cause they were travelling so light. Someday I hope one of my offspring will keep that old telescope in his or her basement and silver those dang mirrors.
That line would make an awesome book title!
I'd buy it for sure!
Maybe when I get my first book: "UpCoast BreakDown" written and the fiddle tune to go in the book cover recorded, eh.
Tloml is just arriving home so I should go and see what mischief she got up to at work.
Got back around noon and there was a message on the Phoney thing: "The "mud" will be coming at 1300 hr."
Gunther did not answer the phone either so I got my act together and stopped by to find him coming up from the field with walnuts. He turned around quickly and we were at the site before the Redimix truck and the placers. Spent part of the afternoon patting sphagnum moss into wet concrete. never tried that before but now I'm thinking: not a bad concrete finish.
A one second delay of light is worth half the price, if you ask me!
"Our's not to reason why".
I simply mashed the sphagnum into the wet concrete and I'll be interested to see what it turns into.
Then the Maples drop their leaves and we rake as much as we are comfortable doing, haul it to a compost pile and then mow the rest into mulch.
The Jean Genie loves chimney stacks. She's outrageous, she screams and she bawls.
Unless I mist somethin' you smoke cigars or somethin else YCD? One can smell nature more when one's olfactory nerves aren't deadened by nicotine. and fin all y I know ur having a real nice time wherever u R this time. Addiction is the response to the loss of paradise. Amen or Awomen?

I am logged in (finally) on my Mom's computer.
Flew over in a deHaviland Otter with a turbine engine.
Our local small airlines are using these planes mostly on floats because though they went out of production many years ago they are well suited to this type of service. The airframes are completely rebuilt and state of the art communications and navigation systems installed.
As far as addictions go, mine are tobacco, alcohol and gasoline for the truck and the boat and:
No les digas nadia: the internet.
stunning pictures. they are so actuel (now) and do say more words than I could even after my strong morning coffee! mmmwhaaa!
Mom hates her computer so even though I put my blog on her favorites she is not likely to check comments.
Just sittin' here at the sea plane dock waitin' for a plane.
Got a photo of the Otter we will be on but I
Will need to get back to the terminal at home to upload it. I just googled "DHC3 Otter" and the other airline's plane showed up.
Really great plane!
