Hi Wundergrounders. We’ve been hard at work trying to introduce more clarity, depth, and data to our forecast page. We know how passionate you are about the weather, and we know you choose us because we offer more information, less hype, and numerous opportunities to nerd out about weather. That’s why I’m excited to tell you about the progress we’re making, starting with a behind-the-scenes look at our approach. We understand that change can be an adjustment, but we think you’ll appreciate a cleaner, more modern, more data-rich Weather Underground.

We’re getting ready to launch a beta version of the new forecast page in a few weeks’ time. In the meantime, I’ll turn it over to our User Interaction Lead, Matt Schaefer, to give you a sneak peek at what our process has been like, and what you can expect to see on the beta site.

Be sure to sign up to receive an email when the beta site goes live. We’ll also periodically (though not annoyingly) email you when we release major features. As always, send your feedback our way here.

I have posted a very simple suggestion related to an error on the Beta version a couple of times over the past couple of weeks, but it has not been corrected. What should I conclude about this—that you are saving up all of the community suggestions for implementation in one fell swoop and in the meantime not changing even the simplest things? That you are inundated with suggestions and are working through a backlog of them with a lag time of weeks? That we shouldn't take your request for suggestions all that seriously? Just curious.

Quoting 9. Patrap:
IE is not a wunderground proven Browser, wu runs best in FireFox or Chrome.

WUG seems to running fine with the 64 clone of Mozilla Firefox called Waterfox. It also mostly runs with Internet Explorer 11. I'm currently have a small problem with displaying%uFFFF images and some advance tech characters. Every thing else is running perfectly.

Update: I just found out that you have to turn off Active-X Filtering in the settings of Internet Explorer 11 to watch videos that use Flash. This setting is located in the menu under Tools/Active X Filter and should be unchecked. I don't know if the default is having it checked, but doing so blocks videos running under Flash.

The video works fine for me. But then, I'm using a Mac Pro under 10.6.8 and Safari 5.1.7 with cable internet.

See, I have this thing about leading an organized life. Which means basically: there's a time and place for everything. So there's no need to be "mobile" with things which are done when I am IMMOBILE and free of distractions (like driving motor vehicles and paying attention to the world around me).

The whole value of weather reports is to provide information for planning one's upcoming activities. Like right now, I'm paying attention to outside temp & wind speed because the outside temp is -14º F and wind chill is at -38º: a hazardous condition for those getting ready to go to work (for example). Once one is OUTSIDE, one doesn't need a "mobile device" to inform them of such conditions.

Cell phone: a couple yrs ago I was at work and started experiencing symptoms of a heart attack. My cell phone (basic, no unnecessary frills) enabled me to call 911 and get an ambulance on the way. I didn't need videos to entertain me nor did I need "Instant updates" on a storm that was still 24 hours away.

iPod: I have one, use it to listen to music during times when I'm either taking a break from real work or waiting for a bus (or a doctor) to help "pass the time."

iPad: Don't have one. Know exactly 2 people who do. Both are teachers who use specific features to aid them in their jobs. One of them went to So. Africa and his iPad helped him (1) post to his blog and (2) keep up with email - WHEN wifi was available in that far away place.

'Been a Wunderground member for about 10 yrs. So far, I can't see any use for improving, fixing, updating anything - other than for entertainment sake. And I'm especially wary of any new version of WU which works on some browsers but not on others, since the one I've been using is working fine and has been for a few years now.

Used the beta site today for the first time.

First impressions:

Forecast graphic is interesting. I'll see how it fits over time.

On a desktop, lots of white areas between elements. Too, if the image is supposted to 'fit' the device ... I still think that one style fits all is not applicable.

Wundermap seemed to work and animation was smooth.

I am reminded that the wunderground site has become very local location centric. The site design seems to lack a national weather 'landing' zone as classic does [classic.wunderground.com]

Noted some things on the 'What's Missing' area. 'Other' doesn't work. Added nws and avn mos in 'Tell us ...' field.

I'll see how it looks on an android device later.

I haven't been able to watch the video on my ipad, which is a fine example of "upgrade" decreasing visual quality and increasing difficulty of use. What could be done in one touch/click now takes two or three. I should not have upgraded, great lesson.
I continue to use Classic. Simple, you can easily see the graphics because there is contrast and they are not thin lines.
I'll have to watch the video tomorrow on my desk top.
I have my local Wunderground on my favorites bar. Please leave the option of using Classic and I'll keep it on the favorites bar.

When you improve something, it's supposed to be better. Supposed to be. So far, I don't see any improvement in your weather site for all the "effort" that supposedly has been done. Why do the new owners of Weatherunderground want to change the successful company and site that they have acquired? You should have purchased a company that needed changing if it's what you like to do. Get rid of the competition by changing it to something that no one approves. Coca-Cola thought they could change their formula. Can Weatherunderground survive a formula change?

I use the classic and love it. Am not looking forward to your redesign. Already two of my weather sites have redesigned and dumbed the page down to where it looks like a weather report in the newspaper. No extra information, no data for me to track my weather systems and very difficult to get the accurate info I like. Please do not lose the info and simplify. I have weather bug on my phone and it is way too simple for me.

Unfortunately, the web design community has overdone "streamlined" design for the Holy Grail of "uncluttered."

Web designers have gone from information architects to graphic designers at the expense of usability and data.

I don't think Wunderground users are demanding that kind of website.

Rely on more usability testing rather than "cool" artistry.

Oh no! Please, please, please do NOT change the site to look like ios7 or Windows 8! It is so dull and boring to see a site adopt what they feel is a "modern" look, when it is nothing but a lot of white space with narrow, ugly fonts and thin graphics without a lot of meat to them. This phase of "design" needs to be given a quick death and all should go back to a design that actually has content that is visually appealing, not thin and waif-like. It doesn't matter if you cram more data within the page if it is dull and boring to look at.

From what I see from pausing the video as you transition from old to new, is not clarity (your current design is clear enough to read), not streamlining, it is dull, dull, dull. Wind gauges with very thin circles and teeny-tiny arrows is hard to read and just following the current ugly trend of boring graphics with nothing to distinguish yourself from so many other sites using the same dull, boring, "modern" garbage.

Tons of whitespace is not modern. It's a waste of browser real estate. You're not an Apple store, you're a weather information page.

As an over 60 generational I would just like to say..... Leave these sites alone already. Upgrade if you must, and I'm sure you must, but leave the functionality cohesive. Do we really have to learn everything all over twenty times a month?

I agree with Inyo.

I still use Classic because there are fewer clicks to get the information I want. I still can't find a decent landing page on the new site to replace the functionality of the classic. As to the current wundermap ... . I just feel bad that I'm not comfortable recommending WU anymore. I'll try the android app again but given the design considerations made in the last several years and the apparent belief that portable/small screen is the only way to go I don't expect it will replace my desktop for getting real work done, nor do I expect it should. You should look at the graphics/ui of classic. To my eye it is much better adapted to tablets.

Be well,

Kim

If this new upgrade is as annoying as the one you did to the radar feature, I'm only returning for the Weekly Weather Roundup.

I'll get my weather info elsewhere.

I think you should buy back your share of stock from The Weather Chanel and tell them to PissOff TWC is nothing more than some cheap hacks with 50/50 chance of guessing the weather one or two of them may have earned their degree but most are there from holding on to someone else's shirttails.

My feedback, which is general to wunderground, not just this video:

People who want simple, dumbed down weather go to accu-weather or twc. I think people who come to wunderground want more than the average person choosing a jacket. The more data, the better. Please don't remove anything from the functionality or data-rich environment of the site when adapting to mobile technology. Instead of removing anything from the main website, I'd say make the mobile site more data-rich. It doesn't seem to have as much on it as the main site. What about more options to see weather models and graphics on the mobile site? What about making it easier to quickly see model data at a glance. I appreciate very much the ability to look at the Euro model on this site but for the GFS, Nam, and other models I don't use the Wunderground viewer because honestly, the government site with the GFS and NAM are easier to view, because they are simpler. Avoid flash and javascripts... if you could simplify the weather models and other visualizations I'd look at them more. The Wundermap is nice but sometimes on a small screen like a laptop it's a pain to deal with.

I have to say that I disagree with your "every platform, one view" upgrade policy. This is the same carp that Microsoft is shoving down everyone's throat with Windows 8's Metro interface. Making everything look the same across devices with screen sizes that vary from 2.5" - 72" may simplify programming but it makes for a much poorer experience on a dedicated device, like a home computer, where a user would want and expect a more granular interface... aka more buttons to push.

I like the fact that there are new things to find on Wunderground and I know if I look hard enough I can find any niche piece of information I want to find from any date and in any form. There is just NO WAY you can put all that into the simplified, cross platform / device format you have eluded to; it requires compromise.

Unfortunately what will be compromised is the granularity that makes it "underground", which will leave you with basically "Weather Bug"

Don't fix if it's not broken. A lot of times new improved websites or services become worse than the older ones. The example is our skies, that are full of chemtrails, which is a really really bad "improvement".

I would suggest you check out the number of applications you have running on your computer in the back ground. I used to have this same problem with my old desktop running 1.5GB of memory on Windows XP. I'm now using a laptop with 3GB memory and running Windows 7 64 bit. I also keep the number of back ground apps to a minimum now. As a result I have a lot fewer problems with online videos stopping. I suspect if you shut down all but the essential background apps, visible on your windows toolbar, you will have fewer problems. The other factor is the speed of you internet connection. You need to have a continuous 1.5 to 2.0 Mbs feed from you internet provider to watch most videos. You can verify your internet speed at speedtest.net which gives a very accurate indication of you download and upload speeds.

Update (1/16/2014): I just found out that you have to turn off Active-X Filtering in the settings of Internet Explorer 11 to watch videos that use Flash. This setting is located in the menu under Tools/Active X Filter and should be unchecked. I don't know if the default is having it checked, but doing so blocks videos running under Flash.
