A little about my self -

I joined weather Underground in August of 2005 right after they opened the blogging feature. I have been a weather hobbyist since the middle 60's when I lived on the west coast of Florida, north of the Tampa Bay area. I currently live in a small community in central Illinois.

I have been through numerous Hurricanes during my life time. The worse being Hurricane Camille in August 17,1969, A Cat 5, where the eye passed over the location I was at. That being Biloxi, Ms when I was in the USAF stationed at Keesler AFB.

Hi Wabit,
I think it is the 43rd Anniversary of Camile not 33rd.
I was 16 when she blew thru and she made us change our vacation plans that August. And tomorrow I will be 59 so that makes it 43 years ago...
but you probably already know that.

Yes that was one bad storm for the northern Gulf Coast.
We even felt it all the way up the Mississippi River in Arkansas.

Long time since I've stopped by and just wanted to say Happy Saturday to you!!!!

Enjoy your weekend.

Friday was the 43rd anniversary of Hurricane Camile .. At the time the most destructive hurricane on record .. killing 259 people and causing 1.42 billion in damages (9 Billion in 2012 dollars)..

Wind speed reached above 200 mph with gust reaching possible speeds greater then 240 mph... at 190 mph all weather equipment was lost due to the wind ..

HGW .. you must have been just north of where the line of storms started ..

Further south around Bloomington, they got even more rain as the line exploded with moisture and strengthened ..

Winds also picked up high and stronger gusts ..
I figured our winds here reached 45 to 55 mph .. as leaves were torn off the trees ..

Was the best rain we have had since May !!

Skye .. the leading edge of that line of storms had strong winds with gust I would estimate at 45 to 55 mph .. tore some leaves off the trees ... got probably a half inch in the first 5 minutes.. rain was going sideways at times ..

after that it was just a good solid rain coming straight down .. no runoff at all the ground is so dry it just sucked it up ..

Need about 10 more inches to help with the ground water .. many families not on city water have had their wells go dry weeks ago and are and have been hauling water to dump in their wells ... and that's expensive !!!

the area rain fall ranged from .8 inches to 3.4 inches .. with me sitting at 2.3 inches and then another .4 from a shower over night .. so 2.7 inches total in 24 hours ...

Anyone in your family make pickled pears?

I haven't had any since Granny died. They were SO good, too.

Most, if not all, of her receipts were in her head, so they went with her.

I'm sure there's receipts out there that are probably the same but I miss Granny's.

P.S. I do not can. Iffen it ain't on the store shelf or as a gift, I don't get any! lol

Besides, you'd need a cheaper source than buying fruits/veggies from the grocer (bleah...) or farmer's markets. you need them growing in your yard or have a local 'dealer' to meet you under the street corner lamp.

Me: "I've got the yo-yo."

Dealer: "I've got the string."

I hadn't thought about that but I know less water means a higher concentration of sugars.

I'll bet you're wishing you'd planted the 'back 40' with grapes, aren't you?

That's a bit odd, isn't it? Despite the drought, you have a bumper crop of peaches and pears. I wonder why they were unaffected, whilst the apples are non existent?

We have a front moving through. Good thing I got the laundry washed, out on the line, dried and back inside with time to spare.

Sandi .. Mother nature seems to give us too little or way too much ..

Even in the drought my lone peach tree was loaded with very sweet peaches .. over 40 peaches on a tree that is not even 5 feet tall..
my pear trees are also loaded with fruit but not ripe yet ... yet my 3 apple trees have nary an apple on them ...

It isn't fair that mother nature can't strike a balance.
There you are with a drought bringing crop failures, and we had such a wet summer we have had crop failures, too.
I removed several branches of apples today. They had gone brown and wizened. Last year I had hundreds of apples and pears, as did all the apple orchards in the south of the country who harvest to make juice and perry. This year I have not one pear and possibly less than forty apples, which might grow enough to deserve picking.
Farmers have lost crops of beans, cabbages and potatoes.... the whole world will have a food shortage before the year is out:(

Hope your weekend is a happy one!

Yes, its awful Bug .. and its not just here in Illinois .. Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin and parts of other states are in the same situation ..

And if we don't get proper rain in the next month the bean crop will be the same as corn with huge cuts in its yield ..

You can find cheap meat products for a few months then they will rise to levels we haven't seen in years ..

Overall prices in the food market will go up 20% to 25% at their peak .. much like coffee and peanut butter prices have over the last year ...

Ewwwww...... that's awful, wab.

Glad to hear that you are cooler and getting a bit of rain, though it's too little, too late, for the most part.

I've been seeing things on the news and in the paper about how grocery prices will be rising, as a result of the drought. Yippee.

Meat, esp Like I can afford it now. Frankly, if I want a steak dinner, it's almost cheaper (or more efficient/economical or what ever you want to call it)to just go out to eat, than to buy all the stuff and spend time fixing it at home.

Plus, you don't have to clean up the kitchen, which is always a plus.

Gas prices are jumping here. A two to three weeks or so ago, it was about 3.15. The last couple of days, I've been seeing 3.45, 3.58. It depends on the stations. I got gas at Walmart last Sat for 3.26, with my Walmart gift card, which gets me 3 cents off on the gallon. Hubby says, "What's the point? It's only 3 cents." My feeling is that those little 3 cents add up over time.

The're saying a 60 bushel decrease in corn in my area and the further south you go the yields go down even more ..

saw a video of a farmer in Southern Illinois on the news last night .. they walked out into the middle of his cornfield and picked a few ears.. the first one had one kernel of corn on the cob, the next didn't have any and then 3 stalks with no ears and then one with 3 kernels .. the corn plants normally 7+ feet tall didn't even make it to shoulder high .. it will cost him to till down the stalks .. average yield in S. Il is estimated to be 50% loss
