A little about my self -

I joined weather Underground in August of 2005 right after they opened the blogging feature. I have been a weather hobbyist since the middle 60's when I lived on the west coast of Florida, north of the Tampa Bay area. I currently live in a small community in central Illinois.

I have been through numerous Hurricanes during my life time. The worse being Hurricane Camille in August 17,1969, A Cat 5, where the eye passed over the location I was at. That being Biloxi, Ms when I was in the USAF stationed at Keesler AFB.

Quoting whitewabit:
its been so hot here my green tomatoes are being cooked on the vine .. have lost 40% from the heat ...

Dear God! Not the 'maters!

Have you tried dipping them in buttermilk and cornmeal first? You could at least salvage the crop with vine-fried green tomatoes.

(Sorry.... I couldn't resiste.)

Can you finish cooking those green tomatoes inside?

We shouldn't have burned like that. Missing ozone or that flare or something.

Hi, Wab.

I know what you mean about the corn looking so bad. It was like that for us a couple of years ago. Stunted, knee high, brown stuff when it should have been head height or taller and lushly green.

I've been seeing reports on TWC the past few days about the drought and how it's affected the crops in the Midwest. As well as how it's going to affect everyone's grocery bills.

We've got rain in the forecast all this week. WE had rain off and on all this past week. Wish I could send you some. I'm afraid that it will be too late, though, and wouldn't do a whole lot of good. Still, it might salvage something.

At night you can hear the corn making noise as it un-twists its leaves to try to pick up any moisture that is in the cooler over nite air .. and then twisting back up before the heat of the next day as the sun rises ... trying to conserve as much moisture as possible ... it is really sad the way the corn looks around me ...

yesterday (Saturday) the temperature dropped from 104 to 75 in about 30 minutes after about a half inch of rainfall with strong winds knocked down a tree across a street.

I see forecast for 100 or better temperatures again in mid July.

Hopefully we will cool down tonight and only have temps in the mid 80's for Sunday ... as the cool front moves through ..

Sandi .. Was just reading (I read the BBC News online everyday) about them telling ticket holders to stay home as all the usable car parks were full ... you must be really soggy..

Hope there won't be any flooding from all that rain ..

skye .. only if it was low Cat 1 ... we could use the amount of rain it would drop ...

TV was showing fields of corn in S. IL and they were not more then 2 foot high .. a total loss !
One farmer said he hadn't gotten any rain since April 14 ...

Wab, I would willing send you some of our rain and colder temps.

It is the British Grand Prix on Sunday and this is the headlines today....

"Up to 20,000 ticket holders are being asked to stay away from Saturday's British Grand Prix qualifying sessions at Silverstone.
Heavy rain affected thousands of race fans on Friday and left half of the circuit's car parks unusable.
Officials want to get them back into use for Sunday's race."

Silverstone is about ten miles from me, and my grass is sodden - imagine fields used as car parks. :(

Skye ... the bucket of ice would be welcomed ... I was only outside for 40 minutes and the heat completely drains you of energy ... it even takes your breath away like there is not enough O2 in the air ..

and if you are working in the direct sun the feel like temp is over 125 degrees ..
