Back in time 17 years to Hurricane Cesar of 1996
Part I

So many of you know me blogging here for quite some time and I feel free enough to tell you about myself from a different point of view, when I was a kid. Btw, 20 years old is not considered "really" a kid, although my older brother bothers me with that…anyway… Here I go.

I was raised in the rural areas northwest of San Isidro del General, Costa Rica. About 20 miles away. It's a very mountainous area (that fact tells you about mudslides risk) along a river. There was (still sonly, but planned to be paved) one dirt road in and out. When it rains very bad you may have an idea what happens. I'll talk more about that later...

So I began going to school in 1999. First grade (there is no pre-school…etc, none of that). I did good my first year, 2nd and for 3rd, the same (male) teacher taught us all subjects; math, social studies (that involves civics), science, Spanish and some health. The teacher (a friend of mine, still teaching there… he taught my big brother and some of my parent's siblings, yeah! A long time!) comes from the city mentioned above for the week and leaves on weekends. 4th and 5th I had different female teachers, all were nice except the 5th grade (big &*^$!!!)…

I had two friends, us three always used to be together on everything. We were selected for class government 3 times, I got as high as vice-president. Sometimes we had our issues (normal thing) but mostly all cool. We always used to get the best grades of the 18-student class grade, and made fun of who got the lowest.
We always helped out each other, used to go to play video games, fool around and do (bad) stuff… yeah I was somewhat bad when little…not the point here. One time I was chosen to teach, as reward, so I tried to teach the younger fellas. I was in 3rd grade and taught 2nd grade about fractions and decimals… there my dream of becoming a teacher emerged.

It was about 1 mile away my house from the school. Always walking back and forth. My house was in a little isolated neighborhood, some safe distance from the big river called Division. But there was a little stream flowing throughout the ditch outside the fence of the house front yard (not good when it used to rain hard because there was a big open area to the right of my house and the road was built somewhat elevated preventing any rain from that open area, so the only way was to run off along the ditch between our front yard and the road).

My house was the highest on elevation; I could see my friend's houses below. The road eventually crosses the bridge perpendicularly some 1000ft down my house. The bridge was made out of wood, no side fence, and the floor was covered with long pieced of wood, Somewhat dangerous and it was not too high above the cold waters of the big noisy river.

When it used to rain we always had to worry about the water because we depended on a spring far up a hill, a simple water tank as built long ago to store the clean fresh water coming from it but it could mix with dirt and rain coming down the little ditch into the tank people made long ago. From the tank the water ran trough underground pipes which could break if a mudslide were to occur in the right location leaving the entire neighborhood without water.

When I was very little (born-3 y.o), there was no electricity, but I don't remember any of that. In 1995 concrete power poles were lifted and electricity was the major new thing. Screw candles or the ruled-by-the-sunlight crap. Again I don't remember those days.

The weather there used to be chilly in the morning, with lots of dew on all grassy areas. Warm/hot afternoons. All from the dry-wet seasons. The weather forecast was given only once daily on TV, of course, after we got electricity and bought a TV. From what I remembered once they announced a possible hurricane to impact severely Costa Rica.
We were worried from that day on in late July 1996. However routine kept going. My dad was in the USA working, he didn't have an idea either.

Oh I forgot to mention, there is a creek flowing down into the river about 100 feet from the front of my house, distant from on the other use of the road. That creek crosses under the road into the open area north of my house. Another danger.

My house was built on the foot of a steep hill, above the altitude of the house on the hill part of a huge rock stick out… Do note that the open field is somewhat tilted, my house is below and the other houses are below.

Now, you may come up with a conclusion about putting these pieces together before I tell the scary story.

--
Sorry for being too repetitive but it's necessary.

Notes:
1. San Isidro is a city with two different names, its other name is Perez Zeledon.
The city is located about 114 km (70 miles) SE of thd Capital City of San Jose.
2. I'll put up pictures on Part II.

Max, I know you are sleeping, but the storms moved JUST North of us here in Stamford/Greenwich/Norwalk area. They moved in a general West to East fashion, and I mean just missed us. I could see lightning to the North of me. One good thing was, we had the down-draft from the storm affect my area in Stamford, and the temp. went from 87F to 74F in about 20 mins. It became much more comfortable. Now at midnight it is clear outside, and 69F and less humid. Great sleeping weather. Got lucky this night.

:D Just checking.

NYC is easy, compared with the toughness of Music City, USA. I know a certain Yankee wouldn't be able to survive here, especially after a measly thunderstorm rattled him.

You are right Astro, and you spelled "YUCK" correctly, I didn't!. Also, good to have you back. Here at my house, we just got all new windows, and my wife refuses to put back in the three window unit air conditioners we do have, because they will mess up the new window frames, and she's right. But in the mean time till the central air is installed, it will not be pleasant at night as you point out.

Ouch, I know what that is like.

We had two summers in a row where the temps were in the upper 90s consistently, and our A/C units broke both years. It's not bad during the day so much, but when trying to sleep at night and it is still 88 degrees....yuck.
