We are fixing to go into spring in South East Tennessee the cool days will be replaced with warm to hot days and night time temperatures are usually pleasant. Trees get their leaves on them and flowers bloom. But spring also has a price it is the start of Tornado Season here in our area. Late Autumn is also a second peak. The Top 5 tornado months in East Tennessee are 1. April, 2. May, 3. March, 4. November and 5. October. Tornadoes have occurred in every month but these 5 months have the highest occurrence.

In the State of Tennessee about 22 tornadoes will touch down in an average year. West Tennessee averages 8, middle Tennessee averages 7 and East averages 6-7. South East Tennessee which includes the counties of Bradley, Hamilton, Marion, Sequatchee, Bledsoe, Rhea, Meigs, McMinn, Polk and Monroe Counties most of East Tennessee tornadoes will touch down in this region.

Despite the hills and mountains, Southeast Tennessee is not protected from tornadoes. In fact, our area has had a long history of tornadoes including the April 27th outbreak. Most Tornadoes in Southeast Tennessee occur in two ways super cells or squall lines. Squall lines are lines of severe thunderstorms with damaging winds and embedded tornadoes. Plus we often have heavy rain which hides the tornadoes and the mountains make the tornadoes hard to see.

Southeast Tennessee can also be impacted by tornado outbreaks. An outbreak is usually defined as when 8 or more tornadoes touch down in a region or state. Notable outbreaks that have impacted us include the April 1995 outbreak, 1998 Nashville outbreak, 2002 Plateau outbreak, 2008 Super Sunday, April 27th and March 2nd 2012. Their have also been lots of tornadoes in between.

It also appears some counties in Southeast Tennessee are more tornado prone then others, there are two explanations for this. The first being the directions tornadoes travel SW to NE. Second some of the counties are very rural so tornadoes may not be reported. Still here are the top counties in Southeast Tennessee that are tornado prone

Since 1960 here are some of the counties that lead in tornado strikes in our area

1. Bradley (Cleveland area) 26 tornadoes
2. Hamilton (Chattanooga area) 26 tornadoes
3. McMinn (Athens and Etowah) 22 tornadoes
4. Marion (Jasper/South pittsburgh) 19 tornadoes
5. Monroe (Tellico, sweetwater) 18 tornadoes

Also Note recent research shows that of all 96 Tennessee counties Hamilton, Bradley, and McMinn rank #7, #8 and #10 in tornado strikes. Marion and Monroe counties are also in the top 20.
