Hey LowerCal - I just heard that in the car on my way home. I haven't heard from my daughter yet if she felt it, so I'm going to give her a call. Sure lots of shaking going on all around this globe right now.

Inge Lehman was a famous Danish seismologist and the only woman to win the Medal of the Seismological Society of America. Her most famous achievement was the discovery of the inner and outer cores of the Earth through the reflection of seismic waves off those surfaces. She died in 1993 at the age of 105.

Awakened about 1:00am local time by a good shake. Detectable shaking continued for 10 seconds once I was awake enough to start counting. There was a little bit of rattling of loose objects on dressers and bookcases. A couple of pictures were tilted. USGS has it as a mag 4.5 about 9 miles north of here. USGS report of the event has further info and links to maps.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An earthquake that hit Indonesia on Wednesday was at magnitude 7.4 and 282.1 km (175.3 miles) deep, the U.S. Geological Survey said on its Web site.

The quake was too deep to prompt a tsunami warning, said Robert Cessaro at the U.S. National Weather Service's Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The quake took place at 12:05 a.m. local time on Thursday (6:05 p.m. British time on Wednesday). Its epicenter was 112 km (70 miles) from Jakarta.

That's a big one. Hope there was no tsunomi.

Aftershocks in Utah stopped the rescue efforts & totally undid all of yesterdays efforts to save the miners.
