MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A strong 6.1 magnitude earthquake rocked the poor southern Mexican state of Chiapas on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake struck 24 miles from Tuxtla Gutierrez, the capital of the coffee-growing state.

Mexican television said some people were panicked by the temblor, which knocked out power and mobile telephone services for about 10 minutes.

Emergency services in Chiapas said they were sweeping the area to look for material damage around the epicenter, close to the border with the neighboring state of Oaxaca.

In a statement emergency services said no injuries were initially reported.

Chiapas is home to a large population of ethnic Mayas, and was thrust into the international spotlight when the Zapatista guerrilla army launched a short but bloody uprising in 1994.

Large areas are still under partial guerrilla control.

The state, Mexico's main coffee growing region, was badly hit by landslides and flooding following Hurricane Stan in 2005.

Today's Earthquake Fact (June 25, 2007)

The earliest reported earthquake in California was felt on July 28, 1769 by the exploring expedition of Gaspar de Portolá while the group was camped about 48 kilometers (30 miles) southeast of Los Angeles. Aftershocks were felt for days as the party traveled northwest.

Okay, busy day! Hope everyone has a great one!!! :-)

Good morning everyone! :-)
There was a 3.3 quake in Tennessee yesterday at 1:16PM.

Ironically, a news article written that morning stating, "ST. LOUIS - Tennessee emergency responders will be among those practicing their response to a fake earthquake beginning Tuesday....The exercises relate to a mock 7.7 magnitude earthquake along the New Madrid fault."
More google news on the quake.

Well, very busy day! Hope everyone is having a great one!:-)

Happy Monday to everyone! :-)
Nothing major going on out there. I'll post today's quake fact:

Today's Earthquake Fact (June 18. 2007)

Will California eventually fall off into the ocean? No. The San Andreas Fault System, which crosses California from the Salton Sea in the south to Cape Mendocino in the north, is the boundary between the Pacific Plate and North American Plate. The Pacific Plate is moving northwest with respect to the North American Plate at approximately 56 millimeters per year (the rate your fingernails grow). The strike-slip earthquakes on the San Andreas Fault are a result of this plate motion. The plates are moving horizontally past one another, so California is not going to fall into the ocean. However, Los Angeles and San Francisco will one day be adjacent to one another (in approximately 15 million years)!

There have been several moderate shakers the past several days. Here is the current list of recent quakes around the world.

Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful day!!! :-)

Good morning! CA had a 4.6 quake yesterday afternoon.

Also, on Sunday, a 3.9 quake hit on the Nevada/Utah state line.

I didn't think much of this quake, but it seemingly had a news report, so I am posting it.
Earthquake Near Utah-Nevada Border Reported
ALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- An earthquake with a magnitude 3.8 was reported Sunday by the University of Utah Seismograph Station.
The quake occurred at 7:03 p.m., the center said in a news release.
The epicenter was located not far from the Utah-Nevada border in a sparsely populated area between Enterprise, Utah and Joseca, Nev.
Records show the last earthquake recorded in the area was a 5.6 temblor in 1966.
The seismograph station asks anyone who felt the quake to fill out an online survey at its web site.

Have a wonderful day!!! :-)
