Snowave's East Slope Cascades Weather Blog

Storms

Quite the series of storms over the weekend into early this week. The big hit came Sunday into Monday, where reports from several locations around the state (from the coast to the east side mtns) had over 100 mph wind gusts.

Mission Ridge, above Wenatchee- 104 gust

Naselle Ridge- SW WA Coast- 114 mph gust

Precipitation was excessive, even by WA standards.  We recorded nearly 3" here along the East Slopes, which brings the seasonal totals close to a foot of water already, well above average! Some residents with over 20 yrs in the area cannot remember such a rainy stretch of weather anytime of the year, let alone in Oct/Nov.

Several locations on the Olympic Peninsula received over 20" of water in the last week.. with most of that falling in the last 4 days. That's close to 1/4 the ANNUAL rainfall for some areas!

Unfortunately, snowfall was not as abundant. Fluctuating snow levels and very high precipital water (PW) values from a subtropic flow, brought in quite a bit of warm moist air. Snowfall totals were mainly in the 1-3 ft range at the local ski areas... However, this was enough snow to have most of them open up for the upcoming holiday weekend. It would be interesting to know how much snow fell on the volcanoes above 8.000 ft or so. I would guess even with the high PW values, it has to be in the 5-10 ft range.

The train of storms looks to continue into the foreseeable future, albeit a little less intense.... with a cooling of the air mass for possible lower snow levels.

At some point, it should mostly be snow falling instead of rain...
