I never intended to post about the passing of Michael Jackson. It seemed as though everything that could be said had been said, and the time to move on had come.
However, as I did a little light blog-hopping this afternoon, I found something at Scott Spiegelberg's Musical Perceptions that made me smile with appreciation. He'd posted a video under the clever title, "Just Feet It". Offered as a postlude to worship by the organist of Trinity Episcopal Church on Wall Street in NYC, it's a musically satisfying and completely appropriate way of paying tribute to a consummate musician and performer.
I've always loved organ music played in a cathedral, and have worshipped at Trinity. It was nice to hear the organ again, in such an unusual context. While it may not be to everyone's taste, I thought it would make a fine interlude as I work on my next blog posting. Enjoy!

The days of revolutionaries penning manifestos in candle-lit garrets are over, just as preconceptions about the nature of crowds in the streets are being tested. When the English writer Thomas Fuller said, "The mob has many heads but no brains", he surely wasn't speaking of Iran, a nation where the literacy rate is nearly 100%, education is valued and political savvy is common. Today, as events in Iran compel world attention, Facebook and Google pages are being tra...

A few years ago, the mother of a dear friend passed away. As often happens, some of her possessions were offered to those who'd known her as tokens of remembrance. Another friend who's a plant lover was especially interested in keeping alive some of Enid's favorite flowers, so a bush or two and some potted blooms came back to Houston, while a scrubby little cactus in a hanging basket went to live at The Place. For years The Place, a cabin tucked into 23 acres of Te...

When dinner’s over, the leftovers go into the refrigerator, or perhap to the garbage or compost pile. When the sewing project’s done, the scraps may be set aside for quilting, or they may be thrown away. Now and then, after I’ve pruned the plants, I wonder - should I toss the trimmings, or start yet another pot of green-and-growing-something I have no room to maintain? In a world so consumed with worries about “not enough”, it’s ironic that there’s of...
