New Spring Storm Set To Move Across Country
Posted by: shauntanner, 6:31 PM GMT on March 22, 2013 +0
We have set up a Winter storm page for you to track the latest developments regarding this powerful storm. All you have to do is click here!

A powerful storm is set to move through the Rockies late tonight, before moving into the Plains over the weekend. This is a path we have seen numerous times throughout the past Winter, resulting in significant periods of snow. While there is the possibility of heavy snow the Central Plains, there may be one significant difference between this Winter storm and the previous storms of the past few months. Temperature. Below is the maximum temperature forecast for the weekend.

Sure, temperatures struggle to warm above freezing for much of the Northern Plains, but the bulk of the precipitation from this storm will fall from Kansas and Nebraska through Missouri. Keep in mind you don't necessarily need temperatures as cold as freezing to receive snow, but warmer temperatures could prevent snowfall accumulation until the ground is cold enough to allow snow to pile up. Omaha, Nebraska is expected to reach 36 degrees on Saturday, the day the majority of the snow will fall in the area. St. Louis, MO will reach 55 degrees on Saturday as the city will be in the storm's warm sector. This is a few degrees above normal for this time of year. On Sunday, the maximum temperature will dip to 37 degrees, with a mixture of rain and snow possible.

Below is the total snowfall forecast for the entirety of the storm, from Saturday through Monday.

You can see the narrow, but long, swath of the country that will receive the most amount of snowfall. Again, how much this snow will accumulate is still unknown.

The NWS has issued Winter Storm Watches for this part of the country that will receive the most snowfall, as illustrated below.

These watches warn of over a foot of snowfall for some areas, combined with winds gusting to 30 mph or higher. Needless to say, this will make travel difficult in the Central Plains through the weekend.

Also, Winter Storm Warnings are posted for areas farther to the west, closer to the Rockies that will receive snowfall before the rest of the Plains.

We've created a Winter storm tracking page you can use to see all the latest information for this Winter storm.

Snow total forecast for Midwest Winter Storm

A strong storm making its way across the Midwest is actually bringing hazardous weather to other parts of the country as well. One look at the radar loop for this current storm shows that all of the Winter-like weather is currently falling throughout the Upper Midwest.

Winter Weather Advisories are posted through the Upper Midwest, warning of several inches of snow and making travel hazardous.

Here are some current webcams, displaying the travel conditions throughout the area.

A storm out ahead of this Winter storm is bringing area of severe weather to the Southeast. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a slight risk of severe weather in parts of the Southeast, as noted by the yellow area below.

As the two storms begin to interact with each other tonight and into Tuesday, Winter weather will make its way through the Northeast. Winter Storm Warnings are already posted for parts of the Northeast in anticipation of yet more snow for New England.

Blizzard Warnings, Heavy Snow, and Severe Weather...
Posted by: shauntanner, 2:53 AM GMT on March 10, 2013 +2
As we have seen several times already this season, a Winter storm moved out of the Rockies and into the Plains, where it is bringing more than Winter weather to the country.

Blizzard Warnings are posted for parts of the western Plains as over a half foot of new snow will accompany gusts to 50 mph. When you have this combination, the freshly-fallen snow is blown around by the strong winds and makes travel very difficult and dangerous.

Below is the snowfall forecast for the current Winter storm. Note the highest concentration is in the Rockies, but significant snow will fall in the Plains.

Of particular interest with this storm is the severe weather the storm is generating. Several Tornado Warnings have been posted in central Texas, warning of the possibility of significant storm damage, including damaged trees, downed power lines, and vehicle damage.

A powerful Winter storm is making its way through the Southwest, bringing a mixture of rain, snow, and even hail to the area. Here are some of the images I have collected from this storm already:

A Texas Rangers Spring Training game was "hailed out" today. Some pictures from the field:

Pea sized hail fell near I-10 and Elliot. Here is the video:

Strong Storm Moving Through Southwest
Posted by: shauntanner, 6:07 PM GMT on March 08, 2013 +2
We've set up a page to track the most recent powerful Winter storm. Click here to see the storm.

A powerful storm is tracking through the Southwest Friday, on its way toward the Rockies.

This storm comes as good news to many areas in Southern California that have received much less rainfall than normal for this time of year. For instance, downtown Los Angeles has only received 4.63 inches of rainfall since July 1 when it normally received 12 inches by this time of the year. Similarly, San Diego has received 3 inches less than normal.

Winter Storm Warnings are already posted for much of the Southern Rockies in anticipation of the over a foot of snow in some locations.

Here are some current webcam images to give you an idea of how things are shaping up after a dusting of snow:

Posted by: shauntanner, 4:57 PM GMT on March 03, 2013 +1
We have set up a storm page so you can track the latest information on this Winter storm. You can find the storm page here.

A new Winter storm (even though Meteorological Spring started March 1) will sweep out of the Northern Rockies and into the Northern Plains later today and into Monday. The storm will then move into the Midwest and Ohio Valley Tuesday before strengthening considerably while moving off the Mid-Atlantic coast Wednesday.

The track is well-represented in the latest Snowfall Forecast through Wednesday as a swath of snow is expected from the Dakotas through West Virginia and Virginia. The largest amount of snow is anticipated in the Appalachians of West Virginia and Virginia, where over two feet of snow is possible. Elsewhere, over a foot of snow will be possible in the Ohio Valley and Minnesota.

Winter Storm Warnings are posted for parts of Montana and the Dakotas already on Sunday, warning of up to 15 inches of snow.

The Winter Storm Watches posted for Minnesota are expected to upgraded to warnings as the storm approaches Sunday and into Monday.
