July 3, 2013: Today is Grand daughter, Rylee Jo's 8th Birthday. Our first WUBA Baby. She was an infant when I started posting here in summer of 2005! Time Flies!!!

I just loaded 9 new photos from last Sat night's exhibition. Not as big of a crowd last week but I did sell another painting.

Sat June 22, 2013. My opening night of my first Art Exhibition! I cannot believe this night has finally arrived; been dreaming about it for years.
If you are in the area please try to stop by tonight and say hello! It is at Gallery 101, downtown Ft Lauderdale from 6-10pm and I have one of the best caters in the area doing my hors d'oeuvers aka finger foods/snacks. I am so excited!

Good morning everyone,

More rain for Florida today but what else is new.

Most of the state is now Dark Blue on the moisture map and the few counties that are not blue are green.

Not any counties even yellow right now...and more will probably be turning blue as it updates later this afternoon.


Rob, good to see you again and thanks for stopping by.
You did not really "miss" Rylee's Birthday.. it was on JUly 3rd but tonight her best friend is sleeping over and her parents are taking them out some place fun and tomorrow is the family friend Birthday party.
So she is celebrating all week!

Bug so happy you enjoy it. I had it in my bedroom for 2 years and I truly enjoy seeing it every day.

It does brighten up a room and makes it more cheerful. Now I will need to paint another one something similar!


Jeff, give the foot time to heal properly or it will just delay the process. You remember I have been there before and I did not give it time to fully heal and I had to wear that foot gear for another 5-6 weeks!


NEw, thank you. It was a nice quiet time here at the house. We did get in some afternoon pool time and had a lot of good eats but no big parties.
Hope yours was nice.



Well, I got a text message from a friend who has a friend interested in a commissioned painting.
I will give her a call today to get some details.
I think she wants a very large canvas of a flower probably an orchid. I find flower blooms difficult but have done them before so I know it is something I can do. Actually my "Tropical Yellow Flower" painting is one of the 3 that sold, it was the first one that sold.. of two yellow hibiscus blooms.


Hopefully the commission deal will go thru and I will start painting again. This morning around noonish I need to go to the gallery and pick up my 12 paintings that are left there.

May drop by hubby's shop on way home and leave a few there on his business walls in case any of his customers are interested. It was one of his customers that bought the first one Opening night.

But first I need coffee and I just heard the coffee pot beeping that it is now done.

GM,gamma,hope the 4th was a good one for you.We had a good one up here,but oh so hot,and hot humid weather expected right through the weekend. Planning on planting some palm trees in my backyard to really make me feel like Im in Florida. Maybe I'll import and alligator or two.

I'm loving my gift, Gams!

I've decided to hang it in our bedroom, just as it is, with the wire you attached for your show. It will be the first thing I see in the mornings, when I get up. Start my day off right!

Gosh, I always wish I lived nearby. When you talk about the spreads you put out for your cook outs? Yum.

Jeff, hope the time off eases up the leg issues. Do splurge on the eggs and B for breakfast, while you're off. You only live once. (Can you tell I've been re-reading some Wodehouse this week? lol)

Oatmeal? I've never been able to eat oatmeal. Lord knows, I've tried. It's supposed to be so good for you. But I'm a grits girl.

Well the moisture map updated and the entire state of Florida is green or Blue and the entire west coast of Fla is blue and they are the side that rarely gets enough rain...

and they are getting more rain today... so far so good for us..

I actually got in some BBQ and pool time without rain today... doubt I stay up for the fireworks.

Ellen, Chris and the kids will but hubby already in bed, he has early work... and I am soon to follow him.

Oh I can tell you all now, that bottom painting in my header of me holding the butterfly painting...

is the one a lot of us old WUBA Folks got for Bug. I shipped it last Sat 2 day delivery (not counting Sat and Sun) so it got to her on Wed.

She is very happy!!!

Surely hope we don't get rain today; would love to have a day without rainfall.


I bought 6 racks of Baby Back Ribs about 12 pounds..

made a dry rub yesterday afternoon and rub each slab down and wrapped in foil and marinated in fridge all night.


Just now got out and started my smoker up. I have a fire starter that the pros use so you don't need lighter fluid and it is so much better. So fire is going in the fire side of the smoker..

I am putting large tray of water with hickory wood chips and large branches of tropical oregano (I have so much anyway it is a good way to use it up) which I will place under the "non-fire" side of the smoker under the ribs.
I've done this before and great flavor and the smoke smells so good.


I will keep the ribs in the foil and cook on grill about 2 hrs..then unwrap and mop on some of the BBQ sauce I am making on the stove right now. I am using the Neeley's recipe..they are world famous for their BBQ and from Memphis so you know it is good and it is...


I will smoke the ribs probably 2-4 more hours if I can keep the fire low...

also making grilled corn on cob and potato salad, two types and Cole slaw which I made last night from scratch...

Doesn't that all sound good????

Happy Independence Day!
Not sure what I'm going to do still - might go to a friends for a BBQ. Or just watch TV and rest my leg.
For now..since I don't have to go to work, I can take a little more time for breakfast. It's a bacon and eggs day - none of my boring oatmeal! :)

Happy 4TH of July Greetings from the very cool North Pole. It is always a wonderful pleasure to read how God has blessed your life and your family. I love your attitude as your pursue your life's passion as an artist. In a way there is a quote from the Declaration Of Independence that truly captures your spirit.

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

Too many folks miss-interpret this quote as we have a right to happiness without any effort on our own. It states we have the right to the "Pursuit of Happiness". You are living the American dream that our founders envisioned. You are pursuing happiness and exercising long hours and hard work to give your dreams life.

Bug, you and I have good excuses to take it easy this year! Can you keep a secret? I'm not impressed by fireworks anyway. I like a good party, but I can do that at home just as easily as in a big crowd.
(But don't tell anyone else!)


I'm on vacation for now. My leg was bothering me so much from walking at the office that I scheduled Friday, Monday, and Tuesday off of work. We get tomorrow off as a holiday. Hopefully I'll be better after a full week of resting it.

I can't believe how quickly Rylee, Nolan and all their cousins have seem to grow up so fast with each passin year! Time sure does seem to fly by as we adults reach a certain age! LOL! Nevertheless, hope her birthday is extra special and that you and yours have a wonderfully safe Fourth of July holiday ahead!

At this point, I don't think any of us can beat Sandi's terrific birthday greeting to Rylee, but I can leave her with an internet-found sincere birthday greeting as well as a Fourth of July commemoration for you all!

Jeff, I'm taking the 'Old Codger's' way out for the Fourth.

Skipping all the crowds and traffic and will watch the concerts/fireworks on TV, in the comfort of my own home and (likely) in my jammies!

I stocked up the larder, prior to surgery. Bought a container of chipped pork BBQ and put it in the freezer for the Fourth. I always keep a few cans of Bush's baked beans in the pantry. Hubby picked up buns, chips, pickles and some of that packaged coleslaw. I'll get that mixed up with some Hellman's, a little black pepper, a dash of dill pickle juice, celery seeds and diced onion.

We're all set!

Wow..happy birthday Rylee! I assume she doesn't have her own blog yet..


I'm not sure what I'm doing for the 4th. Last year I biked to Central Park with a friend and watched the fireworks there. This year, I'm still dealing with problems from my toe - I could do the biking, but I can't really walk far after I get there.

I am having some people over Saturday, and we'll fire up the grill. Nothing too fancy - burgers, chicken. But it'll be fun.

Today is July 3rd and Rylee's 8th Birthday.

I cannot believe she is already 8 years old and such a lovely and sweet little girl who is very athletic and talented if I may say so myself.

100% different than her little brother, Nolan, who is all full of mischief all the time!

It seems like just yesterday I was here posting pictures of her and she was our first WUBA baby.

She was just a newborn when I started posting here in summer of 2005.

Such Memories.



Well tomorrow is our Independence Day and since it is in the middle of he week we are not having a big party. It will just be hubby and I and the kids here.

I am going to smoke some BBQ Baby Back Ribs..
Marinate them all night in a BBQ Rub and smoke them all day tomorrow.
And of course the sides to go along with them.

We again have a 50% chance of rain but it generally always rains on 4th of July in our area.

So today I must go to butcher and purchase those ribs before they are all gone!

Bug I think Charleston is a big supporter of the local Artist. Some of the other towns in the area do things like that and I am going to check into them myself.

It seems there are many out there that I need to investigate and get involved.

You might consider some smaller canvases for those festivals. Something you could price accordingly for faster sales and that would be easier to cart around and set up.

I know you know best what will work in your area and what you'll do best with; I'm just rambling.

I do know that some of my younger friends want original works but don't have the money for full sized canvases. They look for smaller original pieces that are priced within their budgets. Just as it is hard for an artist to get started, it's also hard for most beginning collectors. Unless they just hit the lottery! lol

I've got a few original watercolors from some well known members of our local artist's guild. But they are small pieces and I bought them years and years ago. I couldn't afford their work now. In fact, I think they've all passed on.

I bought them at the annual Charleston Art Guild's sidewalk art show. They set up one weekend every April on Church Street, downtown. They hang their pictures on the wrought iron fences at St. Phillip's Church and the fence across the street around the cemetery. They'll also have tables and boxes holding original works, as well as prints, notecards, etc. You can find a wide range of prices and subjects. I always enjoyed going but haven't been in some years. Parking is a big issue in that area nowadays. Not to mention the swarms of tourists.

I just added the Butterfly painting "Surreal Garden" that I shipped out last Sat afternoon to the new owner.
I had Fed Ex take a picture of me with it before they boxed it up for proper shipping.

The new owner should get this Painting tomorrow hopefully in the morning.

I put it in the header also with the ones from the exhibitions... so everyone knows which three I have sold so far.

I fear I will be "in the red" for a long time...
I have so much "invested" in getting this business started it will take a lot of sells just to re-coup some of the expenses but I think all small business actually "lose" money the first year at least..

Hi Bug,

I have learned to not count in sales or commissions until I really have money in hand.

Yes I will check with all the community events that I can enter. Some of the big ones like the Los Olas Art Festival I doubt I will ever pursue.

I've been going to it for around 15 years and it is shoulder to shoulder crowded with all the artist tents in the center. It costs a small fortune just to enter and get a spot then you have to rent a specific size tent and have it set up and then have some way to get all your art there and back very early in the morning and out of there each evening and back again next day for 2 days.

I have spoken with a lot of artist who tell me some years it is just not worth the cost and effort. Most of the crowd is there to just "look" and enjoy the large block party. So I doubt I do that one

but some like the Palm Beach Sun Fest I may consider if it is not too expensive to get a spot.


There are smaller exhibition/contest locally and I have done a few of those but only problem is no one sells anything at them.

The woodstock Arts/Crafts fair is every fall and I've been to it a lot also.
It is more for "crafty" sales and most items are under $100.00.

Original paintings usually do not do well there but I am going to check into it also.

so yes, I will take advantage of everything there is locally.

Three sales and two possible commissioned works?

That's not shabby, at all.

Does your local art guild hold sidewalk art shows? Or coordinate with community festivals/events where you can set up your work? Those things might be options for the future.

But I will not be able to have these types of showing every week! but going forward I am really going to research local marketing and I have a lot of contact and info out there on other venues and other galleries that are friendly to unknown local artist.

also still going to check out the "on line" thing.


I just loaded 9 new photos from last Sat night.. as soon as they are approve (hope hope hope) I will put them in header.

Man all of Florida is getting so much rain this week and I don't see any let up anytime soon. Places in SW Fla (across the sandbar from me) really got some floods.

Hi everyone, BF, Jane, Bug, Sandi, just a quick fly by for now will be back later...

I sold another painting Saturday night! That is 3 paintings now in the past 8 days.

I will come back later with pictures from Saturday night which was a much smaller crowd but nice because I was able to spend more time with the guests who came buy.

Also I may get a commission job from one of the friends from Sat night. And another friend said he knows a neighbor who wants to commission a painting.

I am OK with doing commission work as long as it is something I feel comfortable painting.

Happy Monday and White Rabbits three times to you all!!!
Hard to believe it is already July! YIKES!

I think I am heading in the right direction because I do want to be able to "make a light living" off the selling of my paintings or I will be looking for a part time job somewhere!

I know you sold one painting at the opening. Have you sold more?

I like the notecard idea. They'd be great for you to use for your personal correspondence and I think the other artists are right: I believe they'd sell very well. I've seen many of our local artists offer note cards for sale in their galleries, as well as local shops catering to the tourist trade.

I see your point in letting some of this first batch go for maybe a little less than the recommended asking prices. It's kind of a 'get your foot in the door' type thing for you. It also allows a few folks to buy your works in the early phase of your career that might not be able to afford them, later on.

I remember just a few short years ago you were in the midst of a drought. All things change. We are also having a wet summer here in the midwest. At least the grass is green, even if it is too cool for swimming.

Sandi, it went off perfectly and I am looking forward to this coming Sat Night Event at the gallery. It will be smaller but I will still have hubby taking pictures because a lot of friends that could not come last Sat will come this Sat.

Ylee, thank you and that is true, most people will probably only ever buy but one painting...but I am hoping the lower prices this one time will at least give some friends an opportunity to buy one. I will be going up on them in the future when I am more established. Yes people have no idea how much time and research not to mention cost goes into these paintings.

I still have some important "computer" type of work to do to help my business along and we all know I am not very computer savvy.... so I tend to procrastinate on those items on my things to do list.


I am also going to start visiting some of the galleries here in SE Fla that tend to lean more toward the "unknown local" artist and see if they would consider hanging a few of my paintings.
and of course Hubby's shop is going to get at least 3 or 4 as soon as this event is over.

When we go to Key WEst in August I am bring my information and a few paintings. Key West sells a lot of tropical paintings to the tourist, especially those that come by cruise ship ...

I also still may get my own website if I can find one that is easy enough for me to figure out.

And, while I am not going to make "prints" of my paintings because to me that takes away from them being "originals".. I am going to check into the note card market.
Those note cards made from artist paintings tend to go well and all the artist say it is worth it because they sell. Also it would be nice for me to have my own note cards with some of my creations on the front cover...
And a lot of "tourist" type of gift shops sell them.

Like I said I still have a lot of work ahead of me...

cannot give out details yet but it is the one
Surreal Garden, with yellow back ground and large butterfly and purple cone flowers...
as soon as I can get it from the gallery display it will be going off to a very appropriate new home.

So far so good!

$1,000 is the most expensive you have? That is Big Lots cheap! The printed stuff you buy at a deprtment store isn't much cheaper!

My thinking is that buying paintings isn't like buying something at a store's grand opening, where they want repeat customers. I guess some people might want several paintings by the same artist, but my thinking is, most people won't, and if they aren't coming back, why not charge them full price?

Bug, thank you very much. Actually I don't have a "scrap book" because in today's technical world you really don't have to keep a paper document like we use to do growing up... we have everything on line...

and I have a lot of pictures of the entire process and a lot of written notes I've made.

Seriously I kept a journal for 40 years and just threw them all away last year because it was just mountains of stuff that had to be stored away and None of the kids really cared at all about ever wanting them.

Now it seems our entire life is "on line" anyway.

I finally added prices to my paintings, I am selling them currently at a lower than suggested price in hopes more people can buy them but I am also listing the recommended prices I was advised by the "experts" that I should sell my paintings for...and in the future I will need to do that. Many of the artists were telling me I was putting a low price on my paintings... and considering all the time and research that goes into a painting not to mention the very expensive canvas and I buy professional grade acrylic paints...

But like I said this first batch of paintings, at least I am still getting my old "salary" from my severance package so we are not "starving" yet.

I doubt I can add the prices here because it would be way too hard to go back in an edit them like I did on FB.
I don't have a website yet I will work on that next.


But for now they range from $250 - $1,000.00 plus shipping which is not cheap for the packaging and shipping cost via Fed Ex. If anyone is interested they can email me at PattiLauer,Artist@gmail.com



Been a busy day so far but I think I may take it easy for awhile now I got a lot done.

and I have been doing good with my walk/run workouts the past few weeks ... just got to keep it up.
