Dec 31, 2012: Happy New Year to all my dear WU Friends!

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne!

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

Dec 26, 2012: I cannot believe it is already the last week of the year. WOW...

Christmas just passed and New Year Day is around the corner.

I will load up my family Christmas Eve photos as soon as the problem is fixed.... see prev blog.

Thank you all so much for all your posts and comments and graphics in the prev blog. Having all of you as friends over the years means a lot.

Happy New Year 2013!

-------------------------------------- ---

Here are my weather Maps. This one had to be removed from my above the blog spot; it was causing my computer problems.

-------------------------------------

I found out, these maps are measuring fire hazard and soil moisture, not necessary drought according to rainfall.

----------------------

--------------------------

For inspiration I went back to prev blogs and found the 5 new paintings I did in 2010 and 2 more I did in the mid 1990's. Not putting in here pictures of my wall murals or the pirate ship I did for Nolan.

Sure hope when I start painting as a career I am able to paint a little faster than it took me to complete these paintings!

Tropical Yellow Flowers (seflagamma)
Sept 6, 2010: My latest painting. Not really happy about this one...did not turn out as I hoped but it is done... We will see. Still will need to take to art class next week to get feedback..
Tropical Yellow Flowers
Surreal Garden (seflagamma)
I finished this painting Oct 11, 2010 at class tonight... Now I have 5 completed "new" canvas. This is the vision I had in my head early last Tuesday morning, a Fantasy that I could not wait to put on canvas... I really enjoyed painting this one.
Surreal Garden
Lone Palm (seflagamma)
Finished early August. A tropical sunset painting of a lone palm. I hope to do a series of tropical sunset and/or sunrise paintings in the near future.
Lone Palm
Everglades Marsh Painting (seflagamma)
My completed painting of the Everglades Marsh. I painted this in July 2010.

Framed by Nature (seflagamma)
Sept 20, 2010. I finished this painting today and got my art teacher's approval tonight so I could sign it. This one I finally started feeling comfortable so I must keep on painting as often as I can. This is another one from the Everglades.
Framed by Nature
Beach hut Painting (seflagamma)
This is another painting I did in 1996. I got the inspiration off a Menue cover from one of our resturants down here.
Beach hut Painting
Bird & Flower painting (seflagamma)
I painted this in the mid 1990's. Last night my art teacher had me made a few little adjustments to the painting and it made such a difference.

Thank you for your kind words. I must admit it was a bit a a surprise!!

It makes me want to develop a "style" of art with my camera. There are so many great photos out there, I need to find my own way of doing things... Something else to keep me busy in 2013! Hopefully my health will cooperate this year!!

Hope Noly is feeling better now, little ones bounce back so quickly.

Happy New Year to you all!!!!

Thank you all so much for your greetings.

The party was great fun, cannot believe we stayed out so late...for us anyway...

and of course we had our ride home safely.

Yesterday was a "rest" day for the most part...

now today will be a get back to business day.

I still have all the outside decorations, the back patio decorations and the tree to take down this week.

Noly is not feeling well so he is home with me today.
therefore, not sure how much I will get done.

Let us all hope 2013 is a great year for us all!

Currier and Ives

We spend January 1 walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives... not looking for flaws, but for potential.

Airman - we had a whole discussion about these in Bug's blog a while back.

We have to buy "Shranks" to put your clothes in.

When we had our apartment in Germany it was what we would refer to here as a studio. Just one big living room, a kitchen and bathroom. It's amazing how it sufficed. Of course we didn't have children back then :)

I remember New Year's Eve in Germany. Our first year, we had only been there for a couple of weeks and it was during the Vietnam war. When the fireworks went off we thought we were under fire. Knew better the following year!

What do you do with all your clothes especially the large heavy winter clothes.

We have hanging racks by the front door for jackets and such. In summer we store most of them in the basement. We always keep light jackets out for the summer as there are days you need them.

Hope you all have a great New Years! Just a few more hours to go until bang, boom, bang! They really get serious with fireworks here.

Ylee, thank you very much. Yes I remember cold winter days when I lived in the Memphis area....not too inspiring to get out side at all.

Bug, That is sad about the Christmas Music, the Christmas Music is probably one of my most favorite parts of the Holidays. I do love the decorations also. It would not hurt my feelings at all if everyone would really scale back the gift giving. I found myself watching a lot of those Hallmark Christmas Movies the entire month of December!

Scott, so you have first hand experience at what I see on "House Hunters International".... places to live are twice as expensive and half the size!
What do you do with all your clothes especially the large heavy winter clothes.

Sandi, thank you and Happy New Year to you!!!
It is my hope that 2013 is very different from previous years and that it opens up a new career for me.

Good morning on this last day of 2012.

Ellen is meeting Christian "half way" today in I think Vero Beach for New Year's Eve. They have reservations there for tonight. He has to work today so could not really drive all this way for just a few hours. Rylee & Nolan will go to their other grandparents who have watched them on New Year's Eve since Rylee has been born.

This morning hubby will run his errands then I will do mine. I have a manicure & pedicure appmt at 2pm...
Then we will leave for the party we are attending around 8pm.

Going to be a busy day.

Hope you all have a safe & Happy New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

Sandi, LOL you know when I watch House Hunters International I notice many places in Europe call them wardrobes... I also notice in many of the older houses and apartments in Europe some don't really even have closets or they are very small.
Where do people store their clothing?

Hi Patti,

Most houses and apartments in Germany do not have closets. We have to buy "Shranks" to put your clothes in. Unfortunately this takes up 1/4 to 1/3 of your already small bedroom space. This is the one thing I really do not like about houses over here.

I understand, Gams.

So many people put up their Christmas trees and decorations Thanksgiving weekend or even earlier, sometimes. By the time Christmas gets here, they're ready to get back to normal.

I still tend to follow Mama's tradition of putting up Christmas about a week before the 25th and leaving everything up until Twelfth Night.

I also avoid watching anything 'Christmas' on TV until a week or two before the Big Day. Most of the movies, I have no interest in watching, anyway. I hold out for my favorites.

This year, it backfired on me a bit. I saw "Polar Express' in the TV listings the first week of Dec. I didn't watch it because "It is too early to be watching Christmas movies. I'll be sick of them soon, if I start watching them now." No one ever aired it again, like I figured they would. It came on 2 or 3 times, last year. Well, that'll make next year's airing more enjoyable.

There is one thing bad about my hearing being shot; I do wish I could play some Christmas music on the stereo at home, the week or two before, to get me in the mood. I love carols and I miss hearing them.

On the other hand, I'm not being bombarded by Christmas music in the stores until I'm sick of them, long before Christmas Day arrives. They start with that SO early. I heard reports this year of people hearing them in early November.

Bug you came in while I was typing...

My decorations have been up since early December.. I think the Tree was up the weekend after Thanksgiving and I had most decorations completed before Dec 1st.

When I was growing up sometimes my Mother would take our tree down Christmas Day afternoon!

She said once we opened "Santa" gifts the tree looked bare and it needed to go!

I think my tree looks good even without gifts under it. I am always a little sad to take down my tree every year...

I also display all my cards on the wall unit; always have they sort of Decorate that entire wall!

If I did not have big plans in January to start painting again I would probably leave my decorations up until after 1st week of January...
I am usually not in a hurry to take it down this early.

Good morning and BRRRRRR waking up to temps around 52 degrees and it will have a hard time reaching 70 this afternoon. I know we are whimps. But should start warming back up tomorrow.

Bay, good to see you and Happy New Year to you. I bought a "real" Christmas Tree for over 25 years while the kids were growing up. They are beautiful but so messy and you really cannot leave them up more than 4 weeks. Some years they were bone dry and all the needles dropped. Sometimes I think about getting a real tree then decide not to.
Thank you; I may do a series of paintings like The Lone Palm, those ocean sunset/sunrise tropical paintings.
Happy New Year back to you.

Sandi, LOL you know when I watch House Hunters International I notice many places in Europe call them wardrobes... I also notice in many of the older houses and apartments in Europe some don't really even have closets or they are very small.
Where do people store their clothing?
And yes, we use the term "bathroom" instead of water closet or Loo but sometimes in a really large bathroom the toilet is continued in the "water closet" within the bathroom..
Happy New Year to you!!

Bug, I was wondering the same thing if you had that many hats! I understand coats and jackets but I don't think I've seen a picture of you ever in a hat..... now I have hats, lots of them. Pool hats, fishing hats, yard work hats and fancy hats!
One would think I was British with all the hats I have! LOL
But not to worry, I say crazy stuff all the time also; my fingers type quickly and most of the time I don't read what I typed!

So it is Sunday, I made a big breakfast this morning and it is so cold outside for us anyway.
I need to bundle up and go on a fast 3 mile walk (I know I will not be running in these temps)...I need to do this, I have really "lapsed" on my workouts in the past 2 months.
Must get back on schedule next week.

I need to do a little more cleaning up today from all the stuff I took down yesterday.

I may go ahead and take down the back Patio tree , wreaths and decorations out there.

Rylee & Nolan were not too happy when they come home from their other Grand parents home and saw most of the decorations were down. So I have to leave the tree up a few more days.

I think hubby & I are going out to dinner tonight. He always gets a lot of good restaurant Gift Cards from his customers so we nearly eat out for free the first 3 months of the year!

You all enjoy your day!

Goodness, all this talk of taking Christmas stuff down.

I didn't put any of my Christmas stuff up until a few days before Christmas and I won't take it down until Twelfth Night. I'd been displaying the cards as they came in, though.

My neighbor across the street didn't turn her Christmas tree on, at all, after Christmas Eve. I could see it in the living room window, unlit, and by Thursday it was gone.

I thought it kind of odd that they didn't even turn it on Christmas Day. I know they went off that afternoon but you'd think they'd cut it on that morning while they opened up presents.

Hi Gamma~

My favorite is Lone Palm...so pretty :)

We got all of our Christmas stuff taken down and packed away last night. We have a real tree every year and keep it watered religiously but this one had a ton of needles drop. It felt so good to get that cleaned up and everything organized again. An artificial tree wouldn't be such a pain, but I love the real trees and they smell so good.

I wish you a Happy New Year!

Bay:)

Gams,
Having a giggle at the conversation you and Bug are having about 'closets'.
Here in the UK we call them wardrobes. The only time you hear closet said over here is when someone old mentions 'a water closet'....which is a the correct term for a WC, or loo, or as is called the other side of the Pond, a 'bathroom' ;-) LoL

LOL... Sandi just alerted me to the fact that I apparently have a HUGE hat collection.

I need those 3 closets for hats and clothes.

COATS! COATS! NOT hats. Why did I type in hats?

I must be in early stages of dementia or something. It can't be the Irish coffee I had this morning. That was over 6 hours ago. I should be way sober by now. Besides, I wasn't even the slightest bit tipsy before!

LOL Bug, it is a closet that is already all shelves, I did that when I made it an office for storage and it has plastic bins... but a lot of the plastic bins was for arts and crafts so moved them into family room in the wall unit.. You and I are on the same page there with the storage Idea. I am so glad I don't have to start from scratch on that project... just need to clean it out a little more and get it more orangized for my needs now.... also so many old photographs and albums in there I have no place yet to put.....
They use to be in the guest bedroom closet but Ellen & Chris are using that now for their clothes...
I have been on a "de-clutter" project for several yrs now and made big headway this past year...
and really did a lot of getting rid of stuff when we redid the kitchen and living areas.

I hope to continue to get rid of stuff in the future and only keep the stuff I actually use!

Thanks for your suggestions and for caring!!!!

27, you are welcome and Thank you for your feedback on the painting. I really like the Butterfly also... that image sort of came to me in a dream and one of the only times I was not looking at several other pictures to put together a painting.. that one came from my head! But not sure how "sellable" it will be.

My first goal is to create painting that others want to purchase and hang in their spaces and enjoy.

Actually that is my "statement" for becoming a professional artist.

Hi everyone, made big progress this afternoon.
Nearly everything is packed away now except the patio decorations and kid's tree... the big family Christmas Tree inside...and the outside decorations.

Got everything else in the rest of the house (Foyer, living room, kitchen/dining, guest bath, etc) all packed away from the rest of the house...and now I need to really do some cleaning...
we will see when that happens!

I like the hibiscus painting, but my favorite, by far, is the butterfly. The little flowers on the bottom are sweet. I also like the one from the Everglades. Now I can't decide which one is my favorite. haha!

Well, if you're thinking about emptying out the closet, consider putting a shelving unit in there with lots of clear plastic boxes with printed labels. Or an old chest of drawers, with divider/organizers in the drawers. That would increase your storage space and help organize your supplies. You could store canvases to the side of the shelving unit or chest. That would leave the upper shelf or shelves for more storage.

This one was converted to more of a sewing center but there's some ideas: Link (It's really slow to load, though.)

This has soom cool organizational ideas: Link

I'm not trying to give you another project that will postpone your painting! Just brainstorming here.

Wish I had a place to set up for arts and crafts. I only have two bedrooms and 3 closets. I need those 3 closets for hats and clothes. The spare bedroom has family furniture I do not want to get rid of. I need a studio. Half the clutter in the house is craft stuff and I have no place to draw or paint. Excuses, I know, but I can't get into the mood unless I have some place to set up and spread out.

Hi Bug, 2 yrs ago I invested in a very large plastic box that looks like a tackle box but made for your art supplies.

So I use that, but I have this closet in the office I have used to store "arts & craft" items over the past 6 or 7 years... I am thinking about moving most of those items (mostly things the grand kids use) and using that to keep my paints & brushes more organized.. also need room to store the unpainted canvas.

I have all the walls in here in the office covered with family pictures..going to take them all down and store them somewhere and use the walls to hang paintings...

Framed by Nature is my favorite also out of all the paintings I've done so far. Hope I can do about 6-8 more photos using that same format just changing it up a little for a "Framed by Nature" series...
that is the goal.

Thanks!

Hi, Gams,

I particularly like Framed by Nature and the Everglades Marsh. Typed that in before I read your post!

That was good use of those gift cards. A nice, big easel. What kind of storage do you have for your paints, brushes and supplies? A cabinet of some kind or shoes boxes in the closet? Mine are in boxes and probably haven't seen the light of day in years.

Yesterday I did another step in getting ready to start painting in January.

I took some "reward" Amex Gift Cards I got before I left work I had stashed away and my Christmas Money and bought myself one of those large floor standing easels.

The one I have are for smaller canvas and set on a table top which was fine for the sizes I've done in the past...but now I have some larger canvas like 36 x 48 and that is way too big for the smaller easel.

Also got out my paints and sort of re-arranged the office a little.

I still have more work to do to make my office a comfortable studio where it is easy to paint...but I have started.

That is why I am in such a hurry to get the Christmas Decorations done as soon as possible.
This year i am not waiting until until first week of January, I am hoping it is done by January 2nd!

I cannot wait to start painting again.

There are already people who want to buy my paintings...or at least say they do...
But I need a "collection" first before I start selling them...
I hope to start listing them to sell on a web site or one of the many on-line places available.

And I will start volunteering at the studio's and galleries downtown and start attending all the local art functions... and Perhaps I will host a showing at some point next spring...

I need to have good photos made of my paintings so I can make a portfolio, and have good photos for my website or to post on line...

My first series will be Everglades paintings; I have those two and those get the most positive feedback and it has been recommended I start my first series with that type of painting. Hopefully now I am no longer at a full time job outside and babysitting all the time I will be able to paint nearly every day...or do something working toward my new career.

I will keep you all updated!!!

Good morning,

Shore, I know we are silly about what we consider "cold" temps! Thank you I love the family photo from this year also.
This year has gone by so fast. So many good and not so good things going on. A real eventful year in deed and cannot believe it is over.
The years seem to fly by these days and now I am finally not working at my prev job I wish they would slow down so I can enjoy my time doing what I want to do!
Thanks for stopping by!

Ylee, thank you and yes Noly was pouting while we were trying to take picture that is why his Daddy had him.

That picture for some reason Ellen, BEtsey & Pam ended up together on one side and the boys, Scott, Christian Greg ended up on other side!

Ellen & Betsey were trying to get the kids in place then rush back into their spots. We have our neighbor come over and take the picture for us so we try to get it done quickly so he can get back to his family.

Bug, thank you, We will warm up again today to low 80's but another cold front is coming thru and will be cool again tomorrow.

For years we stayed in the neighborhood for New Year's eve but last year we finally went to a party out in Weston, a Doctor friend who has invited us for years to his parties. So last year we went. We drove there (I drove there) then we left our car there and rode home with someone who lived in our direction and had a DD (wife did not drink) then we got up next morning and went and got our vehicle.

I think we are going there again this year. I am hoping I can make it thru the 4 hour event and only sip on a few glasses of wine and drive us home but if I have 3 or more we will call a cab. My hubby and I do not drive after drinking. We have seen so many friends get a DWI and it cost so much money we don't have to waste plus your license gets taken away, etc... not a good thing.
Even a $50-100 cab fair is worth it.
That is why many times when we go to "functions" that are in hotels, we will just get a room for the night and have a great time at the party and not have to worry about getting home; just go to our hotel room at the same place.

Sandi, since you retired doesn't it seem like the years just fly by. I cannot believe now Christmas is over and I am taking down the decorations once again.
But normally I wait until after New Year's to do it...
this year I am going to take down everything but the outside decorations (I like them to still be up and lit for New Years) and the Christmas Tree will probably stay up. I have already packed up all the Christmas China/Glassware and linens.

I want to get as much done as possible today and tomorrow so there will not be so much to do on January 2nd!

27windows, You are back! I read somewhere I think on FB that you and others that were banned here got to come back again. Congratulations and Happy New YEar to you.

Rosy, I have no idea what you wrote but it looks like some type of nice Merry Christmas Greeting. Thank you for posting here and nice to meet you.
Happy New Year to you.

GG, good to see you stop by and Happy New Year to you!

NEw, you are probably covered in snow right now aren't you? Glad Betsey & Scott made it home without any problems before the snow started.
Happy New Year to you.

Thank you all who left comments and those of you that lurk!!!

Happy New Year to you all!

Hi, Gams.

What's the plans for New Years?

Hubby gets up so early for work, he doesn't last long in the evenings, even if he's off the next day. As a result, we haven't gone out for New Years in a long, long time. I'd wind up dragging his snoring carcass back to the car for the trip home long before the ball drops in Times Square. So, we stay home. He usually throws in the towel around 8:30 or 9:00 and goes to bed.

I don't often make it, either. I've waked up more than once around 1:00 a.m. or so, in my jammies, in my recliner, with the cat in my lap.

We're real party animals, aren't we? lol

Wonderful family group...all look so happy!

I can't really believe there is less than a week of 2012 left, this year has flown by, but I must admit I am looking forward to 2013, and hope it is slightly better than 2012 has been.

Hi, Gams! Great family photo. Thanks to Karen for posting it in, until you get over your glitch.

I'm not sure what our high was yesterday but it is currently about 54 here at almost 1:00. It is sunny, with gorgeous blue skies and that horrible wind is gone. We've got a few cold nights coming up.

You silly girl! Our high yesterday was 51! One of these days things will straighten themselves out, weatherwise, and we can get back to enjoying it again.

Your family photo is super. It really is a great, great photo. Just think - in about 20 years or so we may be seeing some great-grandchildren added! Won't that be something? I hope I'm still around to see it!

Like you, I'm amazed we're on the cusp on a New Year already. That's ok. I'm ready, aren't you?

Good morning,

Karen, I don't know how you did it but Thank you So much.
I tried to copy it from FB also but it did not work for me. I am very pleased with how our annual group picture turned out this year.

Bug, yes you are first.

IndianRiverGuy, thanks and Happy Holidays to you.

Scott Thanks!!! I do sort of hope we have finished "expanding" but Betsey still thinks she may want another soon, but Scott doesn't... I think 2 each like they all have now is just perfect!

It is cold outside, got to bundle up this morning with temps around 54 degrees and high today only 72!

This is too cold for me!

Happy Thursday!
