Nov 9, 2012: WOW I had no idea we were so far into November already. So much has been happening lately.

But new month and new blog is needed.

I have some pictures from last Saturday night that got approved so I will put them in here for now.

-------------------------------------- ---

Here are my weather Maps. This one had to be removed from my above the blog spot; it was causing my computer problems.

-------------------------------------

I found out, these maps are measuring fire hazard and soil moisture, not necessary drought according to rainfall.

Yesterday I did some shopping before and after I took Greg to airport.

All the grand kids and the two kids across the street are DONE! Still waiting on all the packages to arrive that I ordered on line.

Betsey & Ellen chose a "gift" they wanted instead of "Amex Gift Card" this year and Pam & the 3 boys will get their Gift Card. So that is all done also.

I made pretty good headway yesterday in decorating also...but today I hope to get it all nearly finished.

It is my intent to stay home all day long and not leave the house .... I know someone will probably call me and ask me to go do something for them but I hope not.

Stopping in the middle of a project to get cleaned up and dressed to go somewhere is a time killer.

I want to totally finish inside... then get outside to the point all I need to do is go out tomorrow and buy the poinsettia plants and place them in the outside decorations.

Then I will take pictures and open a new blog thead!

Thanks to you all for stopping by!!

now back to business! LOL

Karen, I know I see you on FB but I like it when you give a real update here. That is great you still keep up with your swimming workouts.

I have not done anything now in 2 weeks, well except all the work I am doing around the house... I must get back in workout routine again.

Sounds like you are busy also. I love Disney during the Christmas Holidays, it is so beautiful.

I am looking forward to painting again; seems I am almost wishing the holidays would hurry up and pass so I can get everything back in place and start painting again. There is just no way I can start until probably Mid January...

Sandi, Hi my friend across the pond! Yes, it is crazy around here and with Ellen & the kids here it gets hectic. I must admit I cannot wait to get the house back and become "empty nesters" once again!
I am so busy but at least I am doing things that are sort of important to home & family!

And yes, I do believe hubby and I will have the house to ourself Sunday. He has his annual "Boys day at the Dolphins Football game" but it is an early game so he will be home in afternoon.

He said we would order delivery for dinner and test out the new hot tub heater! Just a nice quiet evening, which sounds so good.

Poppy's Dad is out of the hospital; he went home yesterday. There is not much they can do for his condition. He did not need another stint yet but when he feels the angina pain he gets scared and thinks he is having a heart attack but he is not. His Blood Pressure was really bad so that is main reason they kept him extra night. He has to deal with my mother in law so his high BP is easy to figure out. thanks for asking.

Good morning,

Ylee, LOL no Ellen , Rylee & Nolan are living here and Christian comes home on most weekends. He is the one with FPL. His being away is short term for training (except for the 2 weeks he was in NE helping get power back on after Sandy). Hopefully they will only be here 6-9 months.

Greg, Pam, Cole & Ty have a house of their own here. Pam has her job at the private school where both boys attend. Greg's new job (which he says he really likes) is with a world wide oil company based out of Houston. But he flies into New Orleans, then a helicopter takes his shift/crew out to their ship in the middle of GOM. He is not really on a "platform" he said his ship is drilling now. He is gone 3 weeks then home for 3 weeks.

Betsey, Scott, Baron & Teagan live in Wellesley Hills outside of Boston. Scott travels a lot these days which leaves Betsey home with the boys. When it was only Baron they would go out and do things all the time but now with baby Teagan it is a little harder. They come home to visit Dec 14th for 2 weeks.

My family is very hard to keep up with these days!

Oh, my goodness, when on earth do you get time to breathe!!

I too, have done much of my shopping on line this year, it was easier for me, although I do like the pleasure of going to the stores to do my shopping, usually.

After reading your 'War and Peace' entry I think I worked out that you might get Sunday night to yourselves!!
Sorry to hear about Poppy's dad..... Hope things are ok.

Take care of yourself!!

Gamma - you sound busier than ever! Just as I thought. Most of my retired friends don't know how they had time for work!!!!

Glad having the family with you is working out. Sounds like they get some time off to spend with family, but I'm sure it's not the same as having them home all the time.

I'm weary just reading about your day! Either that or I'm tired from staying up an hour later than normal on a work night. Had a pretty busy day today too, but managed to get my swim in after missing Monday. I have to miss Friday because my mom has a doctors appt. right at swimming time, and then Monday we're heading to Disneyland with our new passes. I really want to see the new Cars ride and area. I've heard nothing but good things about it.

I'm going to try to get in the pool this weekend as well, but we have rain forecast from today through Sunday. We'll see how much we actually get!

I'm also almost done with my shopping. Did a lot online myself. I'm getting two Lego kits for the boys on Monday. There is a Lego store at downtown Disney and we get 10% off with an annual pass. I've priced the sets already, and the best price is at the store with our discount! The pass is already paying off!!!

Keep on enjoying the retired life, and let us know when you get started on your art work. I want to see!!!!!

Hey, that sounds like my life, without the grandkids, lol!

" but we know some years it is not going to work out so good."
I thought this was a short term position; does this mean that you're going to have house guests for years?

Finally got the shopping, decorating, and outside stuff done here, just waiting for the next crisis, lol!

Take care!

Good morning,

Ylee, Bug and Jeff, thanks for leaving comments and chatting!!!

Yes I am with Jeff, today I shall clean out any traces of any Thanksgiving Day left overs.

I have cleared out most of it and with some I made split pea soup (with the ham) and Turkey Salad with some of the turkey.

Plus we had the dinner plates on Fri & Sat with the full meal and used up potatoes, gravey and dressing.

Now I am ready to clear out the rest!

We have had beautiful weather the past week; no a/c at all.

Sunday we got the Christmas Tree done and the lights up outside on house. Ellen worked on some more extra outside decorations last night.
One of our neighbors is moving and gave us some of their old plastic outside decorations and Ellen put them out last night.

I took a break yesterday from decorating; I just needed a "down" day. I mean I did other things but just did not want to do anything too busy.
Had 4 or 5 very busy days in a row without a break so I took one!

Then hubby's Dad is back in hospital late yesterday afternoon. It is his veins/arteries that are blocked. He cannot have anymore surgeries but they can still put in a few more stints which I think they are going to do today.

Christian went back to work yesterday afternoon after getting a "long" weekend which he enjoyed.
His Birthday (33) was yesterday so we celebrated Sunday (his family came over for cake & coffee).

Greg leaves Wednesday, I will take him to airport.
But first this morning he is coming over to install our new pool/spa propane heater.
Our old one could no longer be "giggled or patted" into working. It had survived about 5 yrs older than it normal life span so we have not been about to heat the spa in several months..
and this is the time of the year we use it the most.
So we finally (after 2 weeks of shopping) got the new heater yesterday and Greg will install it this morning for us.

We got a full 100 Gal of Propane in our tank several months ago that is just sitting there and cannot be used without a new heater!
Of course, we don't waste it; it is so expensive.
We will only use it for the spa most of the time...and keep the pool cold.
But when Betsey & the kids are all here for Christmas we will splurge and heat the pool so they can all swim.

Also Wed when I take Greg to airport I will get out and finish the last 3 items i need to buy as Christmas Gifts.
Greg flies back to New Orleans Wednesday then take his helicopter ride to his ship Thursday for 3 more weeks then he gets home again right before Christmas.
So far his "schedules" 3 weeks gone, 3 weeks here.. is working out for the family but we know some years it is not going to work out so good.
But the money and benefits are too good to pass up.

I did 90% of all my Christmas Shopping on line this year before Thanksgiving while things were still "in stock" and it feels so good.
I have never done my shopping this early and it is so much easier and less stress.

Everyday UPS delivers large boxes to my front door! I drag them to the already clutter garage ....
Soon I will have to take them out of the mailing boxes and wrap them up.

Today will be busy one; with Greg coming over and I hope to make a large dent on my inside decorating (at least the tree is finished; that is a one day event just getting it done)...
Then I will need to pick up Rylee & Nolan today; Rylee has a 6:15pm soccer game tonight and Ellen works until 5pm so if she picks them up at 5:15 and gets home around 5:30 it does not give them time to get homework done and then eat something and get dressed...

They are all excited, this coming weekend is their Orlando... "Christmas at the Gaylord Palms Resort". Christian is meeting Ellen and the kids there Saturday afternoon. They will come back Monday afternoon.

But don't you worry, we will not be alone... Saturday night we will have Cole & Ty over for the night. Pam has a Sat night event she committed to and a Sunday (Work related) Holiday Party. So we will watch the boys Sat and her Mom will watch them Sunday night.

Have I rambled on enough? LOL I guess I should get here more often..

Hope you are all getting ready for Christmas and enjoying your week!!

It's a turkey-free day!

In other news..
We're having some pretty impressive erosion caused by damage from Sandy, and high tides.
Story here and here.

We've lost two lanes of a four lane road, as well as some palm trees and a bunch of sand. Before the temporary barriers were placed, water was lapping up on the road.

Is this getting press anywhere else?

Just about, Bug. Plus, I read you should only keep fresh turkey left-overs for about four days. So it's time. The rest will end in the freezer, for a rainy day.

Hi, Gams! I'll bet you're in the throes of decorating by now, a garland flung over one shoulder and some tinsel in your hair!

Greg will be back before Christmas, won't he?

Turkeyed out, Jeff?

I wonder how much longer I'll enjoy my leftovers. I think I can finish the sweet potato casserole today. I just killed the stuffing. I'll probably have to put some turkey in the freezer.

So far it's been a fun weekend..Friday I met some friends at Starbucks for coffee. They went shopping. I went home and finished cleaning up.

Saturday I took a friend to lunch. Then had some people over to watch the FSU game. Then some others came over, and we ended the evening in the hot tub..

Getting ready to watch the Dolphins now.

Reading back at all your posts and comments and graphics I will never be able to do individual to you all but I do Thank you all very much.

I love my WU Friends!!!

Been getting the last bits of turkey off the bones for tomorrow's turkey salad...and to get those bones out of fridge...they take up space.
still have some turkey for sandwiches for today.

Also plenty of ham for sandwiches and put some in freezer for later.

Using bones and small pieces to make split pea soup.
It is Christian's BD on Monday and he is on a mini Vacation this weekend and not going back until Tuesday next week ... so he wanted my split pea soup ...
I am making it this afternoon while doing some projects..

I did get the Christmas china out and washed up and ready to put in cabinets (I put the everyday china away until January)..

Ellen, Chris and kids are out and about so the place is quiet again..just me and the their two dogs.

beautiful day here mild temps, can open sliders and windows...and sunshine...

Since I don't have to worry about "work" next week I am not going to "rush" to get it all done as fast as possible; I have everyday next week and I will still be done by Dec 1st, I hope!

Enjoy your weekend..

Oh yes, I am nearly finished Christmas shopping for the Grandkids "on line" and early this year.
Only a few small items I must get to a store and pick up.

I have to take Greg to airport Wednesday (his 3 weeks at home are about over, he goes back for his 3 weeks at sea Wednesday) so maybe I will finish the rest after I drop him off at airport.

We will see...

I know, Bug! We should see how many people we can slip in before she notices. We'll need back stories - "I'm Doug's cousin! We met last year at the block party. Don't you remember?"

My first Thanksgiving in the new kitchen was a success. Everything tasted great. I sent a bunch of left-overs home with the family, but still have a bunch here.

Big thing for me this year - I carved the turkey for the first time. My father always did this before, but he's been so accident-prone and clumsy. I just didn't want to see him get hurt. So it's my job now.

My sister and her best friend went shopping after dinner. I haven't heard from them yet.

Yes I survived and actually had a nice quiet evening,
Hubby went to bed early because he had work today.
Everyone was gone by 5:30pm so I had clean up finished before 6pm.

Ellen was a big help with food prep & she made some of the dishes then helped with clean up.

Today I need to "re-arrange_ some items to make room for Christmas items to replace them (dishes)..

Then I really need to do something with some of the left overs... I may freeze a few of the slices of ham for later. Not much turkey left out of the two of them.

Thank you all for the greetings, I will be back later!!!

....yes some of you could have probably slipped in and no one would have noticed, we were inside and outside and all over the place!

The only time we were all together in one place was during the Prayer and the Toast and seated at their place at one of the two tables for 8 and actually I did have an extra person show up for dinner who we did not expect for dinner... so Ellen and I quickly put Nolan on an end spot...so no one knew we did not know we were expecting 17 instead of 16!

I'm with you, Jeff. I think we could go, just act like we belonged and no one would notice! Except for maybe a little more food disappearing than expected. lol

Karen, I imagine she does send leftovers home with the kids and keeps enough to last her and Poppy through the weekend, without having to cook again. Maybe put some things in the freezer for later.

I would like to wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving, filled with family, friends, food and gratitude for what we do have. I promise to try to live up to this quote all year long!

I read that you are hosting for 16, and we are having 14, but your menu is twice what ours is. Where is everyone going to put all that food??? From what I've seen you have a pretty slim family - but that's a lot of food! Mind you, I wouldn't be complaining if I was going to your house :), but what will you do with all the leftovers? Do you send lots home??? I'm just curious!

Gamma, you put my Thanksgiving spread to shame! I'm just going to bring my family over to your place. I don't think you'll even notice! :)

My stuffing is in the slow cooker. Apple pie and cranberry sauce are already done. I'll transfer the turkey to the roasting pan in about half an hour and get it going in the oven. Then a few hours of rest before I do the sweet potatoes and the broccoli.

Happy Thanksgiving, to all our US friends!

Hi everyone, quick fly by...

and thank you for all your comments I did read them all.

Got 2 pumpkin pies, 2 apple pies, one turkey breast done.

made the Cranberry sauce and it was so easy and so much better than the bought stuff.

cut up all the fruit for punch tomorrow.

Made Avacoda, Salsa and Dip/relish tray with chips.

Ellen made Stuffed Mushrooms ready to be baked tomorrow.

I did all the brother, chicken meat for the dressing, and stewed celery/onions for dressing.

Have the small turkey breast done...

set the long (seats 8) folding table, it is ready to go.

wait a minute I know I've done more than this today... just already bleary eyed...
and getting up at 4am to put the big turkey in the oven and the large ham on the smoker...

still need to make dressing, sweet potatoes, green beans, and rolls........
Oh and set up the main dining room table for 8...
right now it has stuff on it!

at this point I am so tired.

Will come back in the morning.

Happy Thanksgiving, Gams.

Your dinner sounds wonderful. If I lived closer, I'd try to slip in and blend with the crowd! lol

We're going out. It's just the two of us and to fix the things Hubby wants and the things I want, it's just way too much. Too much cooking, too much cleaning and too much food. I'll miss having leftovers to nibble on but...

Afterwards, I think we'll go to Charlestowne Landing. They're open 365 and the weather should be nice: sunny and about 64 degrees.

If Hubby gets sidetracked by one of the football games, I'm still going to go. It will do me good to get out, see the sights and walk off all the food I'm sure I'll stuff in my face tomorrow.

Apple pie is done. Turkey is in a big pot of brine. Bread is sitting out, eagerly anticipating being chopped and turned into stuffing.

I think I'll hit the hot tub for half an hour before I have to head down town!

For flowers that bloom about our feet;
For tender grass, so fresh, so sweet;
For song of bird, and hum of bee;
For all things fair we hear or see,
Father in heaven, we thank Thee!

For rest and shelter of the night,
For health and food, for love and friends,

If you don't brine the turkey, please let me know how it turns out. I've been happy with the results so I haven't experimented. This year I have a kosher turkey, so it's already well salted. But I'm still brining it, out of habit. :)

I found a recipe for stuffing in the slow-cooker, so I'm trying that this year. And my sweet potato casserole will be done in the microwave, in convection oven mode.

The only competition for the oven is the turkey and the apple pie. I might make the pie today if I have time, just so I'm not rushing tomorrow morning.

TomballTXPride, Happy Thanksgiving to you!!! Glad you stopped by.

Remember this song we use to sing in school (those of you old like me)

"The year 1620 the Pilgrims came over.

The good ship Mayflower brought them o'er the sea.

They landed at Plymouth Rock, then built up their houses.

At harvest time they started our Thanksgiving Day.

Jeff, I am making cranberry sauce today also.
Not going to brine my turkey this year. I did for the last two years and for all the trouble it was I could not tell that much of a difference. Plus I am using my large cooler as an extra place to store cold foods as my kitchen fridge is full.
Oh well, I may end up doing the brine tonight anyway.

I will need to get up and put my turkey in the oven early tomorrow so I can get it done and have time to cook other items. I will put the ham on the smoker outside. I really miss my double oven I use to have.

Also I noticed we got rain again last night, seems we are getting rain every night lately which is good.

Also this cold weather, I had to turn on heat this morning! BRRRRRR!! And should remain cold all weekend...

for those of you that live in the "real winter" world.. our cold is temps in 50's at night and only reaching 75 during day! LOL I know we are whimps!

be back later, got to run.

Christian's Mother is bring her wonderful Italian meat balls and a large salad.

Ellen is making stuff mushrooms and I will make some dips.

Also making a beautiful Champagne punch with fresh fruit and right now making the frozen stars (instead of ice) from cranberry juice for the ladies (and men if they want some).

I made my cranberry sauce tonight. Just to get it out of the way.

Tomorrow, I'll brine the turkey, and put the bread out to let it go stale for my stuffing.

Hope everyone is having a good week!

Jeff, when I went to Publix I noticed all the smoke but have not heard anything on news.

We have it up here directly west on Commercial out in the Everglades I am sure there must be a fire out there some place.
but then I saw some smoke looking back east.

Someplace has a fire for sure.

NEw, I catch my breath when (for past few weeks) I walk in someplace and Christmas is everywhere...
I cannot believe it is already here..
but now I am getting into Christmas Mode so ready to go.

Right now I have my toasted Pine Nuts, Grated Parm Cheese and my home grown herbs, oregano, sweet basil and flat leaf parsley...with garlic and olive oil..

I am making up a lot of pesto so it will be ready for the turkey and any other cooking I will need.

it smells so good....

also got abou8t 85% of my shopping done for Thanksgiving..which is good.

Later: Oh my goodness, the fresh pesto is so good!!!

Anyone else down here think it's smokey out today? It's either haze, or fog, or smoke. Looking south from the Sawgrass Mall area.

Hi Everyone, Good morning and Happy Monday..

Sorry I have not been back in a while; very busy.

Yes the party was fun, then we were busy that Sunday...
I had errands this week to get done...

Oh yes I was out and about when I heard on the radio about that Oil Rig blowing up in the GOM and I about had a heart attack. Lucky I was nearly in the parking lot...
Then I realized Greg was home so even if it was his company he was safe here at home for his first 3 weeks back. So I texted him when I got parked.
It was not his company at all, it was a smaller company that drills closer to shore. He said within the spand of just a few minutes so many people called or text him to make sure he was OK or to find out if it was his company! But lucky not him.
He will be home all this week and then leaves next Thursday to go back for 3 weeks.

And like Jeff said, It is the "dry season" but we are getting off & on showers all the time, mostly at night...around 1 - 1.5" week in the past few weeks.
Enough to keep our lawns and most plants healthy.

Last night we took hubby's parents out to dinner for MIL's 82nd Birthday.
Got all my Christmas boxes down out of attic and they are in garage ready to go..

I'm doing sit down dinner for Thanksgiving for about 16 people on Thursday. (I have china and flatware for 24 so got it covered)

I am busy ordering the Grand kids Christmas presents on line early this year; got everyone done now except Betsey's two (Baron and Teagan) I have not heard from her what she wants me to get.
I waited last year until after Thanksgiving and everything the kids wanted was "out of stock"..so this year I am making sure I ordered early.
so far everything they wanted is still available.

Sandi, yes all is well, just so very busy. I've done some gardening and house projects. Made new Christmas Door Wreaths and done a lot of cooking and shopping. Yes, out of the 16 coming for ThanksGiving 6 of us live here!

Ylee, so many of us when we heard the news about the explosion... our hearts stopped until we realized GReg was home! Thanks for asking.
Actually we have had some beautiful weather lately. We had 5 days without rain..then it cooled down.
now it is raining again everyday a little sprinkle here and there but no flooding. Our hard downpours seem to be coming at night.

NEw, I knew I was never going to be "bored" in retirement. I am busier than ever doing things that are important. Plus with the kids living here makes it even more busy. Always something going on around here.

Bay, so good to hear from you again. Glad you stopped by.

Bug, I know that is a lot for a "weed"...I saw Home Depot had a large supply of them for only $4 per gallon bucket which is more reasonable. Mine are nearly stripped right now but they will releaf have more caterpillars soon.
And when I am "resting" I am watching those old Christmas Movies... love them.

Jeff, your new landscape is probably loving our weather. It is about perfect lately. Cool nights and mild day time temps.

I hope I did not miss anyone's post..
thanks to you all for stopping by.

Greg is home and he came over this morning to spend the day with Hubby since Pam & the boys are at school. I ordered a new stereo system I thought would be in last week but hope it gets here today so he can install it for us.

I am hoping to get the patio all cleaned up good and the large cooler cleaned up so I can use it to help with the food overflow from the kitchen fridge.

I will make it back before Thanksgiving!

You all enjoy your day.

Gamma, I head about those workers that were killed on that oil platform in the GOM; I hope your son is OK!

I hope you and Poppy are OK, too! It's been a week since you last posted!

Take care!

THAT much for milkweed plants? A WEED?

I've thought about planting some but have never seen any for sale around here. No seeds, no plants, nothing. Not unless there's some specialty nursery in an area of town I don't go to that carries some.

I just looked at the native plant list from the SC Native Plant Society. They did offer some swamp milkweed for sale at their fall sale but it does require very moist soil. That would be iffy for my yard, even if I had time and remembered to give it a good soak every single day. It grows here along streams, ponds, ditches, etc, where the ground stays damp.

Well, about time for that Ken Burns film to start. Been looking forward to seeing it. His films are always great.
