Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008:
While out running errans during lunch I heard that one of the most talented and handsome actors from the Hollywood Golden Era has passed on, Paul Newman, died last night in his home surrounded by family. We all knew he was very sick with cancer but it is still hard to believe. His appeal to us women covered several generations. One of the few things my Mother and I agreed on was how handsome Paul Newman was and those eyes are what dreams are made of. "Rest In Peace Paul Newman."

Today is our friend bills birthday and since she is part of the Broward Bunch and posts here all of the time, and does not have her own blog. We can post her Birthday Greetings here in my blog if you want. So Happy Birthday Bills!!!

Today for Rylee and Gamma's "Adventure Tuesday" we went to Lion Country Safari. Gamma is good about getting discount tickets for these type of places! Neither of us had ever been here before and we had a great time. The weather was very warm but was P/C not full sun. And because we waited until school started up again, it wasn't very crowded. There is the first part where you stay in your vehicle and take a safari ride through Africa. The animals are roaming around in their "wild" and you are in the vehicle. Going very very slow 2-4 mph and at times you have to wait for the animals to cross the road. You are given a CD when you enter the park to listen to as a tour guide while you are driving through. It was very entertaining. Then at the end there is a Park with a more traditional petting zoo and exhibits and kiddy rides! We had a great time doing all of this. It was another fun day of memories and lots of pictures. I will load up about 15 for this blog.

Gamma... lol.. OK, I'll give you that, it's not opressive out there like it was a few weeks ago, getting more tolerable.

I hear you on the cold office thing. My neighbor works at a bank and she complains how cold it is. It honestly does not seem conducive for getting good production when everyone's teeth are chattering. They also keeps schools very cold. My daughter has to bring a sweatshirt jacket to school each day. It is uncomfortably cold. I would hate that. I get cold in my house and the AC is at 78.

Hi everyone,
back from lunch and still have a few minutes.

oakland, good to see you.. yes we got over 5" last weekend thru Monday afternoon.. enough! but been good since.

bug, I know.. I just didn't have time to rescue my blog for the past few days! LOL Yes I think it was Hepburn! I did a little lurking when I got a chance but no posting.. your new blogs looks interesting will go by and actually try to read it when I can.

Hi Ken, yes, will have your people call my people! LOL Have a great weekend!

bills, rofl.. you know me, I get cold easily LOL..

actually just came in from outside and it does not feel as hot as it usually does. Then again on workdays I am so cold.. they keep the temps in this building in the low 60's (for the equipment.. one day last week the a/c went out for a few hours.. and was just getting about normal in temps.. and two of our big machines overheated! LOL) so at work I am in sweaters, jackets and I even put a lab coat on top of that! and I get cold to the bones .. only way to warm up is to go outside in the heat but yesterday and today just wasn't warm enought to warm me up outside..And all of us employees say it is cold.. this isn't just a Gamma thing! LOL

but at home, we don't keep it that cold!

The weather, while temps are warm, they don't feel warm because not as humid.. actually feels sort of "cool" to us! LOL

Hi {{{Gamma}}}

Loved the Lion Country Safari pictures. We took Kaylee last summer. One of my favorite pictures is one of Kaylee and her parents feeding the giraffe. A good time was had by all.

I'm glad ya'll have been getting rain. We got a little last week but have been very dry for the most part.

Anyway, I just wanted to say hi.... Hope you have a nice weekend, especially Sunday for the BBQ.

just one last post before leaving computer....I have no idea of anything that has happened here since Sunday! LOL pretty lost...but
got stuff to do right now and probably will not be back until tomorrow If I get a chance...

Radar looks like some bad storms heading this way.. lots of yellow and red on radar... if we get another down pour, we are going to be knee deep in water around here!

When it rains it pours... I saw for the 3rd time since August they are taking water OUT of Lake Okeechobee again... they are not going to let it reach 15' anymore.

We are so soggy and the pool is full and the ponds and lakes and canals are full and everytime we get a sprinkle the water stands for a while because it has no where to go.

I sure hope this line of storms moving from West Coast to East Coast isn't as bad when it arrives as it looks now!

got to go for the night, unless something happens and I need to report bad weather. YIKES...Betsey and Barron gone over to Scott's parents for a few hours... she will be spending time with them Thur, Fri and Sat since I will be at work and it is a good way to split up the week so both sides of the family get to see them both when we are off work.

She met an old friend for lunch today and I had Rylee and Baron.. I had my hands full!

I know Sat (while I am at work) the other grandparents are going to baby sit while she meets up with old friends to watch the FSU/UM game at a sports bar.. she is big FSU alumni.

Then we have a big family/friend pool party BBQ on Sunday with Scott's parents and all of us and a few friends over.... sure hope the weather is good by then!

everyone have a great evening!

Here is a pic of Baron in his new play station.. not a good pic but the only one I've taken so far.

well never mind.. problems loading the pic.. when I get it loaded will put it in here . lol

Alley, Bug, Bills, Pros, Love, Foxx,

Hi girls, thanks for stopping by!

I cannot believe I haven't been here since early Sunday evening!

But I know all of you knew I was busy with Betsey and Baron coming in early Monday.

He is doing so good.. so mobil now, pulling himself up on things, crawling so fast. and Eats, that boy is a good eater. He is not fussy at all when it comes to feeding time LOL
He may be 8 mos old and the size of 5 mos old (almost 14 lbs now) but his thought process and moves are a little mighty mouse! LOL

Oh yes, we have gotten over 5" of rain at my house since Saturday... and looks like more on radar heading this way.. everything is soggy around here and every rain shower provides us with more standing water. LOL

Hope it goes away soon; we haven't been out side doing anything all week and only have tomorrow left until Sunday.

I love Lion Country Safari. Riley and I have annual passes (Logan is still free). We went there several times over the summer for a few hours. One time, the lions were roaring (literally) at each other. It was crazy. I also love it when the rhinos chase the zebras.....as long as it remains rated G (no violence). Looks like you guys had a great time.

Good morning, Gams!

I've got my own cup of coffee here, and have enjoyed your photos so much. I see the ostrich finally has her head out of the sand - I giggled, but couldn't remember which of our crew uses that funny pic of the ostrich with the buried head when a storm is around.

I like the giraffe, too - I'm just fond of them in general, but I must say that the pics of Rylee just get better and better. She's got such a personality - doesn't have a bit of her Gams in her, does she?

Enjoy your day, and take that paper nice and slow. I'm thrilled to death because my mockingbird let out a song or two earlier. He's not up to full speed yet, but neither am I!

Morning, Gams!

Yeah, some Sundays you just have to be a bad girl!

Well, you do have an excuse... finish getting those carpets shampooed and get that machine back.

You're not the only one renting equipment this weekend. My aunt told me that their oldest daughter and some of her neighbors rented a lawn aerator and each of them had to do their lawns and get it back this weekend.

I head him say in an interview about 20 years ago that he stopped signing autographs when someone asked for one while he was in the process of using the mens room.

LMAO!!!!!!!
Well at least I caught him by the racing trailer chilling in the golf cart!
WOW now I can see why he stopped LOL
I guess I used the right tactics too, I started talking to him about his team & how he felt they would do that year cause they had switched to a brand new chassis for the car. Pretty cool too cause his driver, Michael Andretti did win the race that day. So yea after a couple mins. of conversation thats when I asked him to sign my race ticket.
BTW.... WOW he DOES have some really blue eyes LOL

Yea I could tell he was uncomfortable with the autograph LOL You could tell he was wondering, Where is my security team. LOL Nevertheless he did give it to me & was VERY nice. You can also tell I think that he loved his racing world more than his movie world. In the racing world he was just a team owner with ALOT less limelight.

Just read the bad news. He was more than just a movie start to me cause of his major interest in racing. I actually got to meet him at the IRL race here in Homestead. Found him when his security people were not around him & got his autograph. REALLY nice guy but, you could tell he was not real comfortable with his "star" status....

Screen Legend Paul Newman Dies at 83 of Cancer
Saturday , September 27, 2008

WESTPORT, Conn. —

Paul Newman, the Oscar-winning superstar who personified cool as the anti-hero of such films as "Hud," "Cool Hand Luke" and "The Color of Money" — followed by a second act as an activist, race car driver and popcorn impresario — has died. He was 83.

Newman died Friday at his farmhouse near Westport following a long battle with cancer, publicist Jeff Sanderson said. He was surrounded by his family and close friends.

In May, Newman dropped plans to direct a fall production of "Of Mice and Men" at Connecticut's Westport Country Playhouse, citing unspecified health issues. The following month, a friend disclosed that he was being treated for cancer and Martha Stewart, also a friend, posted photos on her Web site of Newman looking gaunt at a charity luncheon.

In August, he finished chemotherapy and told his family he wanted to die at home. He was given only weeks to live.

But true to his fiercely private nature, Newman remained cagey about his condition, reacting to reports that he had lung cancer with a statement saying only that he was "doing nicely."

As an actor, Newman got his start in theater and on television during the 1950s, and went on to become one of the world's most enduring and popular film stars, a legend held in awe by his peers. He was nominated for Academy Awards 10 times, winning one Oscar and two honorary ones, and had major roles in more than 50 motion pictures, including "Exodus," "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," "The Verdict," "The Sting" and "Absence of Malice."

Newman worked with some of the greatest directors of the past half century, from Alfred Hitchcock and John Huston to Robert Altman, Martin Scorsese and the Coen brothers. His co-stars included Elizabeth Taylor, Lauren Bacall, Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks and, most famously, Robert Redford, his sidekick in "Butch Cassidy" and "The Sting."

"There is a point where feelings go beyond words," Redford said Saturday. "I have lost a real friend. My life — and this country — is better for his being in it."

He sometimes teamed with his wife and fellow Oscar winner, Joanne Woodward, with whom he had one of Hollywood's rare long-term marriages. "I have steak at home, why go out for hamburger?" Newman told Playboy magazine when asked if he was tempted to stray. They wed in 1958, around the same time they both appeared in "The Long Hot Summer." Newman also directed her in several films, including "Rachel, Rachel" and "The Glass Menagerie."

With his strong, classically handsome face and piercing blue eyes, Newman was a heartthrob just as likely to play against his looks, becoming a favorite with critics for his convincing portrayals of rebels, tough guys and losers. New York Times critic Caryn James wrote after his turn as the town curmudgeon in 1995's "Nobody's Fool" that "you never stop to wonder how a guy as good-looking as Paul Newman ended up this way."

"Sometimes God makes perfect people," fellow "Absence of Malice" star Sally Field said, "and Paul Newman was one of them."

Newman had a soft spot for underdogs in real life, giving tens of millions to charities through his food company and setting up camps for severely ill children. Passionately opposed to the Vietnam War, and in favor of civil rights, he was so famously liberal that he ended up on President Nixon's "enemies list," one of the actor's proudest achievements, he liked to say.

A screen legend by his mid-40s, he waited a long time for his first competitive Oscar, winning in 1987 for "The Color of Money," a reprise of the role of pool shark "Fast Eddie" Felson, whom Newman portrayed in the 1961 film "The Hustler."

In that film, Newman delivered a magnetic performance as the smooth-talking, whiskey-chugging pool shark who takes on Minnesota Fats — played by Jackie Gleason — and becomes entangled with a gambler played by George C. Scott. In the sequel — directed by Scorsese — "Fast Eddie" is no longer the high-stakes hustler he once was, but an aging liquor salesman who takes a young pool player (Cruise) under his wing before making a comeback.

He won an honorary Oscar in 1986 "in recognition of his many and memorable compelling screen performances and for his personal integrity and dedication to his craft." In 1994, he won a third Oscar, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, for his charitable work.

His most recent academy nod was a supporting actor nomination for the 2002 film "Road to Perdition." One of Newman's nominations was as a producer; the other nine were in acting categories. (Jack Nicholson holds the record among actors for Oscar nominations, with 12; actress Meryl Streep has had 14.)

As he passed his 80th birthday, he remained in demand, winning an Emmy and a Golden Globe for the 2005 HBO drama "Empire Falls" and providing the voice of a crusty 1951 car in the 2006 Disney-Pixar hit, "Cars."

But in May 2007, he told ABC's "Good Morning America" he had given up acting, though he intended to remain active in charity projects. "I'm not able to work anymore as an actor at the level I would want to," he said. "You start to lose your memory, your confidence, your invention. So that's pretty much a closed book for me."

Newman also turned to producing and directing. In 1968, he directed "Rachel, Rachel," a film about a lonely spinster's rebirth. The movie received four Oscar nominations, including Newman, for producer of a best motion picture, and Woodward, for best actress. The film earned Newman the best director award from the New York Film Critics Circle.

In the 1970s, Newman, admittedly bored with acting, became fascinated with auto racing, a sport he studied when he starred in the 1969 film, "Winning." After turning professional in 1977, Newman and his driving team made strong showings in several major races, including fifth place in Daytona in 1977 and second place in the Le Mans in 1979.

"Racing is the best way I know to get away from all the rubbish of Hollywood," he told People magazine in 1979.

Newman later became a car owner and formed a partnership with Carl Haas, starting Newman/Haas Racing in 1983 and joining the CART series. Hiring Mario Andretti as its first driver, the team was an instant success, and throughout the last 26 years, the team — now known as Newman/Haas/Lanigan and part of the IndyCar Series — has won 107 races and eight series championships.

Despite his love of race cars, Newman continued to make movies and continued to pile up Oscar nominations, his looks remarkably intact, his acting becoming more subtle, nothing like the mannered method performances of his early years, when he was sometimes dismissed as a Brando imitator.

In 1995, he was nominated for an Oscar for his slyest, most understated work yet, the town curmudgeon and deadbeat in "Nobody's Fool." New York Times critic Caryn James found his acting "without cheap sentiment and self-pity," and observed, "It says everything about Mr. Newman's performance, the single best of this year and among the finest he has ever given, that you never stop to wonder how a guy as good-looking as Paul Newman ended up this way."

Newman, who shunned Hollywood life, was reluctant to give interviews and usually refused to sign autographs because he found the majesty of the act offensive, according to one friend. He also claimed that he never read reviews of his movies.

"If they're good you get a fat head and if they're bad you're depressed for three weeks," he said.

Off the screen, Newman had a taste for beer and was known for his practical jokes. He once had a Porsche installed in Redford's hallway — crushed and covered with ribbons.

"I think that my sense of humor is the only thing that keeps me sane," he told Newsweek magazine in a 1994 interview.

In 1982, Newman and his Westport neighbor, writer A.E. Hotchner, started a company to market Newman's original oil-and-vinegar dressing. Newman's Own, which began as a joke, grew into a multimillion-dollar business selling popcorn, salad dressing, spaghetti sauce and other foods. All of the company's profits are donated to charities. By 2007, the company had donated more than $175 million, according to its Web site.

"We will miss our friend Paul Newman, but are lucky ourselves to have known such a remarkable person," Robert Forrester, vice chairman of Newman's Own Foundation, said in a statement.

Hotchner said Newman should have "everybody's admiration."

"For me it's the loss of an adventurous friendship over the past 50 years and it's the loss of a great American citizen," Hotchner said.

In 1988, Newman founded a camp in northeastern Connecticut for children with cancer and other life-threatening diseases. He went on to establish similar camps in several other states and in Europe.

He and Woodward bought an 18th century farmhouse in Westport, where they raised their three daughters, Elinor "Nell," Melissa and Clea.

"Our father was a rare symbol of selfless humility, the last to acknowledge what he was doing was special," his daughters said in a written statement. "Intensely private, he quietly succeeded beyond measure in impacting the lives of so many with his generosity."

Newman had two daughters, Susan and Stephanie, and a son, Scott, from a previous marriage to Jacqueline Witte. Scott died in 1978 of an accidental overdose of alcohol and Valium. After his only son's death, Newman established the Scott Newman Foundation to finance the production of anti-drug films for children.

Newman was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the second of two boys of Arthur S. Newman, a partner in a sporting goods store, and Theresa Fetzer Newman.

He was raised in the affluent suburb of Shaker Heights, where he was encouraged him to pursue his interest in the arts by his mother and his uncle Joseph Newman, a well-known Ohio poet and journalist.

Following World War II service in the Navy, he enrolled at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, where he got a degree in English and was active in student productions.

He later studied at Yale University's School of Drama, then headed to work in theater and television in New York, where his classmates at the famed Actor's Studio included Brando, James Dean and Karl Malden.

Newman's breakthrough was enabled by tragedy: Dean, scheduled to star as the disfigured boxer in a television adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's "The Battler," died in a car crash in 1955. His role was taken by Newman, then a little-known performer.

Newman started in movies the year before, in "The Silver Chalice," a costume film he so despised that he took out an ad in Variety to apologize. By 1958, he had won the best actor award at the Cannes Film Festival for the shiftless Ben Quick in "The Long Hot Summer."

In December 1994, about a month before his 70th birthday, he told Newsweek magazine he had changed little with age.

"I'm not mellower, I'm not less angry, I'm not less self-critical, I'm not less tenacious," he said. "Maybe the best part is that your liver can't handle those beers at noon anymore," he said.

Newman is survived by his wife, five children, two grandsons and his older brother Arthur.

Hi everyone,

Baja, thanks! Gator, Sandi,

I know, I had read a week ago that he was not well at all then I saw a picture of him about a month ago and I thought then.. He will be gone soon. But still when I heard the news... couldn't believe it.

He is 3 years older than my FIL and about 9 years older than my Dad, but Ladies I never looked at Paul Newman as a "Daddy" figure! LOL and I was always so happy he and his wife of 50 years (1958) Joanne Woodward, managed to make their marriage work. He was lucky to have her and she was lucky to have him.. they were well suited.

I read an article that Paul Newman gave an interview with Playboy Mag about the "temptation" in Hollywood and why his marriage was working. His reply was something like.. "I have steak at home; why would I go out for a hamburger." I think that is classic.
