We have a choice. We can sit back and let the WU staff do what they want, we can let them not listen to us, we can let them disrespect us, or we can take a stand and fight back.

I WANT MY COMMENT BOX ON THE BOTTOM AGAIN

TWC doesn't own this site, the employees don't own this site. WE DO!, Because each and everyone of us is a unique user, we either through a paid subscription or ads ran somewhere on the page generate the income to keep this site running. Without us, they can close the doors and so I ask why have they not listened to us? Why do they continue to ignore us? Why won't they make a simple change that the majority of us have quite peacefully asked. Simply put, they don't care and so it is up to us to make them care.

Today, I ask you to show the WU product team how much you want the comment box moved by simply posting on this blog and I ask you to get your friends to post also. Now if by Tuesday we get no response then we'll look at the advertisers to this site and I'll post their contact information and we'll ask them to help us get the comment box moved to it's rightful spot!

WE WILL BE HEARD!

WE WON"T BE SILENT

I kinda like the new look :)

I was just reading the comments and honestly if I was a serious weather guy and this was my site I would never link the personal blogs to the main weather pages. Think about some of the blogs you've seen posted around here.... Would you really want some poor new user to think some of the chicken little weather forecasts around here are actual fact? LOL, or have Ric be the voice of the WU for users in his town.... Love you Ric ;).

Skye commenting on Rickderr's blog:

Can't we protest something like the font? It's nice on the dashboard but blogs & photos..white space/old people can't read it & after all the lower case L & upper case i problems over the years..really? Why are the . are so lite?

Hey Skye, I've been wondering about the light font issue myself. I swear, the main blog page is murder on my eyes, even with reading glasses! So, I decided to try to find a scientific explanation for the faint text being a problem. It turns out, technology proves what our eyes already know - the color selection, and some aspects of the black-on-white font stinks.

If you use Firefox on a PC, you can download a plugin from mozilla.com called the WCAG Contrast Checker. The plugin lets you capture the background and foreground colors from almost any website, then calculates the color contrast and its compliance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0. WU blue-on-white flunks, big-time.

What about the gray (black?) on white? It flunks, too, if you pick the *average* pixel contrast for the text. It turns out that the reason that the "black" text looks gray is because its darkness varies considerably, depending on which part of the letters you look at. You're not imagining it - the periods really are lighter.

If anyone doubts the scientific backing for the WCAG guidelines, you can dig around the web and find plenty of scholarly references to them. As of this moment, they appear to be the most widely accepted guidelines for determining whether a website's text is accessible to readers with less-than-perfect visual abilities.

I'll cross-post this to a couple of other blogs, too.

Might want to have a listen to these, anyone who hasn't...

Riah's wu blog videos of the execs etc talking about site changes.

Hear anyone say the words "photographer" or "blogger"? "Blog" even? DATA, DATA, DATA... PWS...PWS.

Doc M spoke the words, "awesome contributors." Ha. If he said any more about that, it was edited out of the vid.

The photographs are safe, as in not going off any time soon. Photo interface is still on the local forecast page, bright and shiny as always, while the local blog links have been removed. The member blogs are not safe, and will not be until admin at least acknowledges their presence.

BF~ I suppose varying shades of grey to black aren't really considered "color" change. Though I think some of the blue boldness changed slightly this week too, varying it slightly more between Policy & Rich Text. Maybe a very slight shade change on preview & post comment.

Stuff like this was the same color as the comment text.

Your comment (above comment box) looks slightly more gray than black.

Subtle difference. Nothing drastic.

As for elimination of our last four photo thumbnails showing on our blog pages..that is what I was pointing out in that link. It was not part of the original blog structure, just like Community activity or tabs~ that got us around better & re-included a random photo. Note random photo is also not on the original blog frame (that we seem to get stripped down too again with each update).. I missed that for so long..

I've tried to convey the rest of the point you are making. Don't forgot they roll underground here & it really is more important that they take that effort to save every last upset PWS owner..for all of us & they are doing that.
Skye,
Okay. I understand what you mean by color now. I don't think of shades of gray as color. I do see pale blue on the blog owner's comments like used to be - even back to classic.

Still not understanding what difference it makes whether or not the photo features were present the day the wu blogs opened for members to post. These features have been present for many years, and they're Gone With the Rewrite.

Is your point that, because the four thumbnails and the random new photo interface were not there on the day these blogs opened to members and were added in the first several months then poofed after all those years with this rewrite, evidence (or hope) exists these features may still be restored after having been eliminated with this rewrite?

Random photo preview was still present in the immediately previous new wu - just hidden in the community dropdown menu. Was an option for each member to chose on their own profile to enable the photo preview or not. This photo preview was still a feature, and the random photo preview and member option to view it disappeared with the beta and now live new version.

Just takes one sentence. e.g We are working on blogger concerns... We cannot do this in the new wu... We will work on these after we satisfy the PWS concerns. How long could it possibly take an admin product team leader to type one sentence in a comment at the product team blog? or at thug's?

Thanks for mentioning what I said to whomever. These blog concerns have already been mentioned thru the proper channels without any indication of what is going on toward resolving them except "Thank you for your feedback," effectively removing the opportunity for more members to vote on the features they miss and want back.

And PS. You don't have to be caught in the middle of this, Skye. At least I don't expect it of you. In no way do I feel it is your responsibility to convey member blogger concerns to admin.

I'm not sure what your point is about photo galleries. A bone of contention has been the elimination of our last four photo thumbnails showing on our blog pages. This feature had been there for many years. There in 2008 for sure. I remember seeing Ike photos there, and I'm 98% sure it goes back at least to 2006. The thumbnail, random new photo preview on every wu page goes back as far as I can remember. Both features are still on classic.

If it's questionable whether or not the eliminated features can be restored in the new format due to necessary structural changes, then admin could state that. They have not. They have shelved the concerns raised about the blogs by saying "reviewed" making it impossible for anyone else to vote on them, yet, - as insideUK pointed out here or in the product team blog - an idea praising the new page is left up to gather votes!

If restoration of the photo links (thumbnails and photo preview) and of the local area blogs link on the local(city) forecast pages is not feasible, just say so. Wouldn't take a minute of their time.

Badmin is ignoring member blogger concerns. On the product page blog concerns were shelved without a word as to whether they are being considered. If it's impossible or questionable to restore the photo links and local blogs links we have had, maybe not since April 2005 but for many years, how hard is that to communicate?

And (Not an issue for me but in support of ric and others) how hard would it be to say, yeah, we'll put a link to the comment box for you, as soon as we have time?

The community activity page is not an issue for me. I liked scouting the new photo uploads there, but, bottom line, that page enables trolling to the max.

Admin is being closed mouth. And that's where zelda is coming from in saying the blogs are on their way out the door. Admin can communicate - and quickly - about our concerns, but they choose not to do so. Every single blog concern put through "channels" is shelved. Of course, others have again raised the same questions. A couple three of these are active on the product feedback page now, and we'll see what happens.

I'm not looking for proof. I was curious what color changes you saw, Skye. I don't see any.

BF~ I had to double check since I remembered our photo galleries being added in maybe 2005 or 2006? & sure enough they also weren't part of the original blog set up..

Wayback crawler hasn't been through the last 6 weeks or more so I can't show you color changes over the last week. On release day all the text was the same color & the background was totally white. If you haven't noticed the subtle graying & different degrees of text bolding that has happened since, the adding of a way to quickly mail a blog owner from their blog, guess I can't prove it to you.. I've seen people that were having a hard time reading on the stark white comment with thanks over it.

I haven't seen promise one that they are bringing back any of the missing big features. My guess is why promise that if you don't know 100% if it can be rebuilt exactly the same in this form or when that might happen. There are still bugs that render critical parts unusable for people.. Some of these cool features took months to build the first time. I'm not saying everyone is going to like this version any better than the last when done, but to think they are doing away with the blogs soon because of the missing features seems a bit rash to me. Especially since everyone of those features are not included in the basic blog frame & from what I saw they worked on blogs maybe two days right before they were released in the new version..

As for feedback~ Closed is what it says every time they finish looking at a suggestion.. Yeah no promises that Community Activity & such is or is not coming back but where do you get that means blogs are going away?

Re comment 49: I agree. What does "an idea you voted on has been closed! Thank you for your feedback" mean? "Closed" sounds somewhat ominous. I voted for two of the most requested improvements and hoped that there were enough votes and "closed" meant they were approved. When I checked the status on the feedback forum there was no indication they were a top priority or were even under consideration.

Skyepony, (47) I noticed no color changes Friday. What do you mean?

And, if what you state is true, how about Angela Fritz or wu product design team indicate they are working on things - Like, for instance, publicly transfer some of the "Reviewed" blog concerns posted and voted on at the product design forum out of the "thank you for your feedback" wastebasket over to the "we're working on that" pile.

If/when they do that, I will believe what you say.

As much as I enjoy a good protest...after weeks, I've mostly stopped scrolling to the bottom to post. Orientating myself to the new Bold/Italic/link & such only took a day. The first time I saw it on my tablet the new placement made total sense. When I'm keeping up with a blog & commenting alot from a PC scrolling to the bottom doesn't make sense (in newest first)...I'd like them to eventually add an option to customize it to make ricderr happy though.

Can't we protest something like the font? It's nice on the dashboard but blogs & photos..white space/old people can't read it & after all the lower case L & upper case i problems over the years..really? Why are the . are so lite? We use numbers like 62.2 here often. There is many things in this that are being written by people that, have not worked here so long & are not actual site users. It went live before it was ready. It's already improved alot in a week. Went from nearly unusable to somewhat frustrating depending on what your are doing.

They have already said better site navigation is coming & added back some of the easy stuff (like "Contact This Author", in the upper right). None of the different site areas were well connected on roll out...if you played in beta you watched them start to make a decent PWS dashboard & redesign the forecast page, then throw the rest of this together, a frame to build on that got shoved live. It wasn't just blogs cut off. & alot of the bigger features missing seem like later add ons to previous versions too. If all that has to be rewrote or even tweaked it could be a while... They have to get it stable, finish the PWS stuff & appease the masses that never make it to the blogs or photos first. They haven't completely ditched us. Noticed they fixed up some colors & stuff for us in the blogs on Friday, the easy quick stuff, but feels a little more like home.

I'll admit, I've probably been "in the know" less this roll out then last...but I've watched them & the process close, chatted with them a little. I would like to wager against zelda the psychic. I don't think Member Blogs are going to be done away with anytime soon..

The comment box at the top is unusual, but for ten bucks a year I'm not complaining. I'm guessing here, but I think if you took all the membership fees you might be able to pay one month of bandwidth costs. They don't give bandwidth away for free. I closed my last web site because the bandwidth charges were soaring like a hawk. I am not acquainted with the latest bandwidth rates, but they aren't cheap. My suggestion is set up a blog site and give it a go. Meanwhile, you might like to try NOAA, they use five point five billion of your tax dollars every year to provide weather data to every weather site in America.

All in all, this site is amusing and for that point alone it would be a shame to see it go down the dumper.

Now it's just "signs" that point to it. Would be so easy for admin to say disconnecting the links that tied the member blogs to the rest of the site was necessary to accommodate the new, non-boxed blog style. They have not said this. At the feedback concerns page, ideas about reinstating member blog photos and links have been shelved. Ggirl started a new one about the missing local forecast page links. We'll see what happens.

The paranoia is in bloom
The P.R. transmissions will resume
They'll try to push drugs to keep us all dumbed down
And hope that we will never see the truth around

So come on

Another promise, another seed, another
Packaged lie to keep us trapped in greed with all the
Green belts wrapped around our minds and endless
Red tape to keep the truth confined

So come on

They will not force us
And they will stop degrading us
And they will not control us
We will be victorious
So come on

Interchanging mind control
Come let the revolution take its toll
If you could flick a switch and open your third eye
You'd see that we should never be afraid to die

So come on

Rise up and take the power back
It's time the fat cat's had a heart attack
You know that their time is coming to an end
We have to unify and watch our flag ascend

So come on

They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious, so come on

Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey

They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious, so come on

Hey, hey, hey, hey

TWC doesn't own this site, the employees don't own this site.

We don't either, ric. We built this blogging community. Otherwise it wouldn't be here.

Your fight is righteous for many. A choice, maybe. (Add: I have no value about where the comment box is located.)

zelda the psychic says:
Member blog issues mentioned by BriarCraft are moot. The site redesign eliminated the member blog interface with photos and local forecast pages because the member blogs will soon be eliminated.

Bloggers will still have mail and be able to comment on the featured blogs. That's it.

Bloggers will be able to upload photos, but to where? Not to their blog sidebars because the feature has been eliminated from the site in preparation for shutting down the member blogs.

PWS station owners have a blog now (PWS met) where they can announce their station or seek advice, so they won't need to put up a blog.

Possible wu will grandfather the member blogs that are already here. Doubt it.

No new member blogs. No old member blogs. No member blogs. This will happen by June 1.

And that's the way it is...

The real side of this is we are seriously and truthfully attempting to communicate with the tech team and tell them what we like and why. Why did the community activity bar go away? That was an integral part of WU. How else am I supposed to know when new blogs from various bloggers roll out? You cannot possibly tell me there was a good reason for getting rid of that.

The only thing that has me tethered to WU is the same thing that brought me here in the first place. Community. Nowhere else on the internet have I found a welcoming site with such amazing bloggers, a place that I could navigate quite well and comfortably. Now it reminds me of Win8 when that debacle first came out. Yuck.

as far as blogs go they should only be allowed once a month and kept to 150 character. like this, the new sight sucks, now i'm done for a month.

Oh, I know what to do. And have. My blog is now on WordPress. I get my forecast from local TV meteorologists. I only come back to WU to say Hi to my WUfriends and comment on blogs like this. So, you see, it has nothing to do with laziness and everything to do with a strong dislike for what WUalmighty has done to blogging here.

Here's a more appropriate WU logo:

I am on strike. I have closed my blog.

It is ridiculous to need two tabs open in order to read and comment on a blog.
It is stupid to take away our 4 recent photos from the blog sidebar. (And what about those top/hot feedbacks in the forum with 50 votes in 24 hours that get "reviewed" into oblivion?)
It is crazy to remove the Blogs in This Area list from the forecast page.
It is insane to give us a font there the lowercase l (L) and the uppercase I look identical, oh and if you should bold a lowercase i (i) it looks the same, too. Easier to read, eh?

It tells us that WUalmighty doesn't want to encourage blogging on their site any longer.

Oh no, don't start another argument about what is and what is not swearing. We already went through that and got nowhere.

Anyways, "things are being looked at" isn't a real, honest answer. When the admins on the blog page tell you to "go here to lodge complaint"...that's not really looking at a problem.

Anyways, it seems to be that so far the update has been a tremendous fail. If mobile users can't use WU (which is where the update was geared to) then the update should never have rolled out. Surely the WU tech team can run bug scans and tests without having to piss (btw, "piss off" isn't a swear phrase, despite some users' opinions) off their entire consumer base.

It's the javascript errors/hangs in firefox, that ruin the functional experience...font scaling/colors that present readability issues I could suffer through if the f-ing page would load...glad classic.wunderground.com is there, because nuwu ain't ready for prime time...by the way, what does nuwu rhyme with?
