Friday's Question of The Day

Well, it has been quite awhile and after perusing just a few blogs I can tell you it hasn't been long enough. Oh well, life goes on and the blogs go on and as long as I can enjoy myself and those that I've come to know and like, life is good.

Don't worry, there's a question, it's just that my fingers have a bit of work to do first.

I watched the Super Bowl over at Mary's, aka IHave27Windows. She has a wonderfully normal yet oddballish family. Not much unlike mine. I had a great time and being with her family made me homesick for mine. Now Mary doesn't want me to tell this but what the heck, I wouldn't be me if I was like her so let me tell. Mary and her family take care of her father. To me this is life at its worst but also at its most perfect. I have this notion that children should take care of their parents as they become old. Now, "dad" joined the company around the tv set and as time went by I could see he was becoming cantankerous. (You know you've been in Texas too long when you say words like cantankerous.) Well before you know it words are spoken and people are upset and Mary is mortified that her guests had to witness it. A terrible thing I think we would all say except we would all be wrong. It was a beautiful thing, not for what had happened but for what happened in the next ten minutes. What happened was, there was a couple of apologies and in no time there was once again a family. People who loved each other and who accepted each other and knew they were bound together. Again, the end result was fascinating how quickly they all came back together. Its a lesson that I need to learn. That hell, I need to practice right now, this minute.

OK I know, to hell with gushy stuff, let's get to the question. Do you know what this weeked is? Oh it is Valentines weekend, but it is also the start of the Winter Olympics. I'm a bigger fan of the winter games than of the summer games sans the ice skating. Well, I enjoy ice skating except that I'm rooting for the crash. Ok, let me lose my "man card" by saying I do enjoy the ice dancing. The twirls and jumps don't impress me as much as watching the footwork that the ice dancers choreograph into their routines and that leads to the QOD:

What is your favorite Winter Olympic event?

Have you heard of a different selection process for the USA competitors? Not these Professional we have now. But like jury selection. You get beer belly dads or doudle seated aunts or metropolitian ziggy stardusts or real EMTs or good teachers or weather forcasters or short order cooks or truck drivers ect..
One month to practice and out on the slope you go representing America. I pay a bunch to see my long legged not so athelic dad grabbing for the ski slope marking gates instead of his ski poles and pigeon toed braking skill to stop before crashing into the mortified crowd of well wishers.
But in all seriousness I am pround to be represented by our best. They are to be taken seriously like their commitment.

Sad day at the Olympics

Hours before the Winter Olympics were set to open in Vancouver, a Georgian luge competitor died after a horrific accident during training on Friday.

Nodar Kumaritashvili, 21, was training at the Whistler Sliding Centre in Whistler, B.C., when his sled veered off the Olympic track and crashed into a steel pole at 90 mph.

His death "clearly casts a shadow over these games," said International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge, who was overcome with emotion at a press conference. "This is indeed a sad day. I have no words to say."

Morning, Ric,

First, a funny note. My mom was involved in our super bowl watching, too. As a matter of fact, we were at her house. She didn't get cantankerous, but she fell asleep in her chair and missed most of the second quarter. Everybody looked at her, said, "Well, apparently we're not going to disturb her", and went right on socializing. As you say, perfect.

I really like the Winter Olympics - it's hard to pick just one event. I really like the half-pipe and downhill, and all the skating. When I was skating away winters in Iowa, I used to pretend I was in the Olympics. I never could go backwards, but I could do a pretty good spin. ;-)

Good to see the QOD back!

Good morning RIC..I would say right now its a matter of having enough snow on the hills for the events to happen. Seems they have been seeing alot of rain, fog etc. They have been bringing in snow from Whistler but will it be enough?

My favorite Olympic event is bobsledding with ski jumping a close second. Then of course can't forget HOCKEY!!!
