Friday's Question of the Day

It’s here. The time has come. You can feel the excitement. The tension is mounting. Everyone is ready. It’s FOOTBALL!!!!

The Pop Warner football season starts tomorrow. The Treasure Coast league will all be meeting at Okeechobee for the jamboree. It’s going to be a fun season. Kyle is a little disappointed. We have 26 kids on our team and so they have made separate starting defensive and offensive lines. Kyle caught a starting defensive spot but as one of the younger players he’s not the hotshot star he was last year. He has to work for it this year and he is learning this is a tougher game than he thought. Last night he lined up for a tackle on the running back and as I watched I saw the fullback line up on him to block him out of the play and Kyle was flattened. I mean head snapped back, one tank of a kid running full blast hitting another who never saw him coming, it was classic football and my boy was at the receiving end. Crying, partly out of pain and partly from a bruised ego he picked himself back up and made his way back to the huddle. To me, that was all I needed, getting hit is no big deal, getting back up and keeping going is. It’s one of those life lessons football teaches. So, it should be a good year. It should be a good learning year and hopefully if Kyle can maintain weight and have two years as a Mighty Might, next year he’ll be that fullback and it will be his turn to administer the lesson and another will be there to learn and although that’s not the focus it does lead to the QOD:

What opening day or the start of something do you get excited about

Happy Saturday Ric.
We've been out school shopping... You know, nowhere in any of the parenting books does it tell you to be prepared for the first time your teenage daughter throws a pair of thongs into the shopping cart.....

LOL, I figured since I was tramatized I'd come give you something to worry about too ;)

Opening night at the Met, 9/22 this year. Verdi, Strauss and Massenet; should be a great one. I'm especially looking forward to their staging of the second act of La Traviata. Life is good. BTW, did I mention Renee Fleming. Life is really good.

I get the most excited when the Daytona 500 rolls around. I love watching Speedweeks in the prelude to the Great American Race.

Of course the first kickoff to the regular season of the NFL! I just hope the Lions have some surprises in store for this season, and by surprises I don't mean throwing the ball to the opposing team or fumbling LOL

Grammar police punished for 'fixing' rare sign
Self-styled vigilantes wiped out errors on signs across the United States

PHOENIX - When it comes to marking up historic signs, good grammar is a bad defense.

Two self-styled vigilantes against typos who defaced a more than 60-year-old, hand-painted sign at Grand Canyon National Park were sentenced to probation and banned from national parks for a year. They had removed an extraneous apostrophe and added a comma to the sign.

Jeff Deck and Benjamin Herson pleaded guilty Aug. 11 for the damage done March 28 at the park's Desert View Watchtower. The sign was made by Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter, the architect who designed the rustic 1930s watchtower and other Grand Canyon-area landmarks.

Deck and Herson, both 28, toured the United States this spring, wiping out errors on government and private signs. They were interviewed by National Public Radio and the Chicago Tribune, which called them "a pair of Kerouacs armed with Sharpies and erasers and righteous indignation."

An affidavit by National Park Service agent Christopher A. Smith said investigators learned of the vandalism from an Internet site operated by Deck on behalf of the Typo Eradication Advancement League, or TEAL.

'Haunted' by errors
Authorities said a diary written by Deck reported that while visiting the watchtower, he and Herson "discovered a hand-rendered sign inside that, I regret to report, contained a few errors."

The fiberboard sign has yellow lettering with a black background and is several paragraphs long. Deck wrote that they used a marker to cover an erroneous apostrophe, put the apostrophe in its proper place with white-out and added a comma.

The misspelled word "emense" — rather than immense — was not fixed, Deck wrote, because "I was reluctant to disfigure the sign any further. ... Still, I think I shall be haunted by that perversity, emense, in my train-whistle-blighted dreams tonight."

Deck and Herson pleaded guilty to conspiracy to vandalize government property.

They were sentenced to a year's probation, during which they cannot enter any national park or modify any public signs. They were also ordered to pay $3,035 to repair the watchtower sign.

The TEAL Web site now has only this message — "Statement on the signage of our National Parks and public lands to come" — without a period.

The start of school! 16 years as a student & 28 years as a teacher (not to mention as the parent) - always something special about a new school year.

And the sports seasons, and... well, I get excited about any new start. I even like Mondays!

Equally, there is deep emotion for the ending of things too... final game, end of school year, etc. and the passing of our heroes such as Upshaw.

Football for sure! Our schedule changed a biot for the jamboree..so the younger one has a 9 and 11 game..then the older one is at 3 and 4:45..so I am in the great city of Okeechobee ALL DAY LONG!!!!!!!

At least we have been able to practice, some leagues have not been that lucky.

It is seasonal for us..Football, then Basketball, Lacrosse, and flag football..so each is fun in its own way..then for the daughter it is volleyball, basketball then Lacrosse..it is all a blur! Who has time to celebrate anything..lolol
