THURSDAY'S QUESTION OF THE DAY

OK, so it’s Valentine’s Day. Its funny how many people talk about how over commercialized Christmas has become but no one complains about V-Day which is a holiday created to overcome the winter blahs for retailers. Oh well, here in the Derr household the kids think it’s their day.

Quasi jumped into Bob’s blog last night and brought up that Obama is funded by special interests and I thought I’d do a little searching this morning. It’s easy to make any accusations but I thought rather than say anything I’d do some searching and here are some facts.

PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES WAR CHESTS

Obama………..103 million…….18,000 from PAC’s
Clinton………..108 million…….10.6 million from PAC’s
Edwards………..44 million…….6,587 from PAC’s

Romney………..90 million…….314,000 from PAC’s
Rudy…………...60 million…….7 million from PAC’s
McCain………...40 million…….387,000 from PAC’s
Ron Paul……….28 million…….3,653 from PAC’s

Makes you say hmmmm.

Well, since it’s Valentines Day let’s talk about love, but let’s stay away from the conventional. There are plenty of blogs for the conventional and that’s fine and dandy, but let’s probe a little deeper. Who are you and what do you love?

What music do you love that no one would guess?

What is the strangest food that you love?

Who do you secretly love or admire that no one would guess?

What do you love about your spouse/significant other that they would never guess?

And just for our favorite weather weenie Rob…..

What is your favorite Weather?

Yes, me too. Things are settled there a bit since the French promised to intervene in another attempt by the rebels to overthrow. Temporary fix only, eventually it will happen again. The next 30 days will pass ever too quickly.

Happy Valentine's Day Ric.
As far as music nothing too surprising there, old classic rock or Southern rock mostly.

As far as strange food it seems I have something in common with HomeGirl nothing says home like peanut butter and pickle sandwiches or on saltine crackers.

Who do I admire? People with disadvantages that don't allow them to stand in their way and oh my youngest son (26) right now and not just because he brought me a box of chocolates and a beautiful card LOL but he is working hard and maturing into such a wonderful man.

As far as the spouse and I. We will celebrate our 35th anniversary in May but what I love most right now is the smells coming out of the kitchen! He is cooking me steak, baked potatoe, and salad.

Favorite weather. Some like it hot and that would be me. Clear blue summer skies with high temp in the low nineties and low temp in the low seventies.

What music do you love that no one would guess?
The soundtracks to "Last of the Mohicans," and "Gangs of New York." Plus throw in some Nine Inch Nails, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice In Chains, Robert Plant, Metallica and Santana. Is that musically diverse enough? LOL Oh, and don't forget I love bagpipe music.

What is the strangest food that you love?
A fried peanut butter and jelly sandwich, made just like a grilled cheese but you put peanut butter and jelly inside instead. It is delicious!

Who do you secretly love or admire that no one would guess?

I admire Mother Theresa, she kept on her goal even when her faith was in question. It takes someone with great strength of will to keep doing what you know is right even if you doubt the reasons that got you there to begin with. She is truly a saint who lived the most human of lives.

What do you love about your spouse/significant other that they would never guess?

I love his cuddles. He has the biggest, broadest, chest and getting cuddled by him is like being wrapped in a pair of bear arms. I love hearing his heartbeat beneath my ear. It's the most beautiful sound in the world.

And just for our favorite weather weenie Rob…..

What is your favorite Weather?
Dark skies, howling winds, bitter cold, stinging neddles of rain lashing against the windows, and thunder rumbling. But inside, a fire in the fireplace, good hot cocoa, your honey near by and both of you setting in comfortable chairs with a good book, soft blankets and healthy pets, I imagine heaven would be just like this.

Ah, I'm feeling the love. LOL

Clemens hasn't been convicted of anything. This is an example of what the media does. It fuels the flames of a fire that hasn't been set yet. Maybe we should review the backgrounds of the 456 people Clinton pardoned in 8 years of office.

I'm still wondering why anybody cares? Clemmons couldn't have been prosecuted...the statute of limitations had run out...he had no reason to say anything?? This is the biggest waste of time and money I've ever seen!! (well, pretty close)

Good Afternoon everyone!

McNamee's lawyer predicts Clemens pardon

One of Brian McNamee's lawyers predicted Roger Clemens will be pardoned by President Bush, saying some Republicans treated his client harshly because of the pitcher's friendship with the Bush family.

STAR WARS!!!

WASHINGTON - President Bush decided to make a first-of-its-kind attempt to use a missile to bring down a broken U.S. spy satellite because of the potential danger to people from its rocket fuel, officials said Thursday.

Deputy National Security Adviser James Jeffries, briefing reporters at the Pentagon, did not say when the attempted intercept would be conducted, but the satellite is expected to hit Earth during the first week of March.

Gen. James Cartwright, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said at the same briefing that the "window of opportunity" for such a shootdown, presumably to be launched from a Navy ship, will open in the next three or four days and last for seven or eight days. He did not say whether the Pentagon has decided on an exact launch date.

Cartwright said this will be an unprecedented effort; he would not say exactly what are the odds of success.

"This is the first time we've used a tactical missile to engage a spacecraft," Cartwright said.

After extensive study and analysis, U.S. officials came to the conclusion that, "we're better off taking the attempt than not," Cartwright said.

He said a Navy missile known as Standard Missile 3 would be fired in an attempt to intercept the satellite just prior to it re-entering Earth's atmosphere. It would be "next to impossible" to hit the satellite after that because of atmospheric disturbances, Cartwright said.

A second goal, he said, is to directly hit the fuel tank in order to minimize the amount of fuel that returns to Earth.

Cartwright also said that if an initial shootdown attempt fails, a decision will be made whether to take a second shot.

Shooting down a satellite is particularly sensitive because of the controversy surrounding China's anti-satellite test last year, when Beijing shot down one of its defunct weather satellites, drawing immediate criticism from the U.S. and other countries.

A key concern at that time was the debris created by Chinese satellite's destruction — and that will also be a focus now, as the U.S. determines exactly when and under what circumstances to shoot down its errant satellite.

The military will have to choose a time and a location that will avoid to the greatest degree any damage to other satellites in the sky. Also, there is the possibility that large pieces could remain, and either stay in orbit where they can collide with other satellites or possibly fall to Earth.

It is not known where the satellite will hit. But officials familiar with the situation say about half of the 5,000-pound spacecraft is expected to survive its blazing descent through the atmosphere and will scatter debris — some of it potentially hazardous — over several hundred miles. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

The satellite is outfitted with thrusters — small engines used to position it in space. They contain the toxic rocket fuel hydrazine, which can cause harm to anyone who contacts it. Officials have said there is about 1,000 pounds of propellent on the satellite.

Known by its military designation US 193, the satellite was launched in December 2006. It lost power and its central computer failed almost immediately afterward, leaving it uncontrollable. It carried a sophisticated and secret imaging sensor.

I agree about the commercialization of Valentines Day...it is certainly NOT the same thing as it was when I was a kid....way back in the day.

But it is a fun day - and I love sharing the "warm fuzzy stuff" with my kids, hubby, and friends.

This story may not really be the result of commercialization, but it is a story of Valentines day love gone awry - a few years ago, I needed to send some flowers to a child in the hospital. (close friend in another town) The 8 year old girl had been admitted in emergency situation on the 12th and it was discovered she had diabetes. On the 13th, I decided that some flowers & balloons would be a good present for her.... I called over a dozen florists in that town (some who were very close to the hospital) before someone would agree to take my order. Some of the florists simply did not answer the phone. And some explained that they were just too busy and that they would only deliver flowers that had been ordered five days in advance.

Now for the QOD - I think I'm pretty transparent ...so no surprises. One thing I do absolutely love are the candy conversation hearts. I am constantly eating them all February. My daughter keeps checking the pantry to be sure that I haven't stocked up a supply to last the rest of the year...

I am hoping for that!..LOL I think if its close she wont, but if Obama can get far enough ahead, and that means he must win both Ohio and Texas, then she will bow out, again I hope..LOL Yes, its gonna be tough for him in Texas, and now the Ohio Governor has endorsed her, so we will see.

Bob, I don't know a thing about Ohio but I don't think she'll lose in Texas. Her promise of eventual amnesty for illegals will likely win the massive Hispanic vote here. I'd like to think you were right that she's really in this for the good of the nation or that she's that noble, willing to step aside for the party conglomerate, but I don't. Sorry.
