WEDNESDAY'S QUESTION OF THE DAY

By: ricderr, 11:35 AM GMT on October 31, 2007

Good morning once again as we're racing our way towards the end of the week. I've finalized the QOD road trip itinerary. We start at the Waffle House and then we'll meander over to "The Story" street. Next, we're going to have to make a pit stop at "The Recipe Store" before slide over to the "Debate Central" Our next to last stop has to be at the Idiot blog complete with "Love Shack" and of course we have to end up at the "Neighborhood Bar." I know celebrating another year is a bit early, even if you use the hurricane season for your yearly colander, but there's only been 6 major November hurricanes in the Atlantic area since 1900 and only four of those have hit the US and since they are predicting a cold front to sweep through Florida in a week I think we're pretty safe. As much as I'd like to pack up the Hippie Bus and start today, we've got to pay homage to Halloween. It's actually one of Becky's favorite holidays. She decorates the yard, her work and of course the kids. Oh, she's decorated herself also. There was the year that the theme of Fantasy Fest was Circus Side Shows & Freaks, I of course was the Bearded Lady, complete with 44 DD bra and Becky went as the Wolfman. She didn't tell me what she was dressing as and when she came up to me on Duval Street. I had no clue who she was. She does the same type of transformations with the kids, except for the years when they just had to have a bought costume. Bought costumes are funny to me as my viewpoint has totally changed. Growing up, if you had a home made costume it was considered cheap. You were too poor to go out and buy one. Now it didn't matter if that bought costume was worn for three years in a row, and now two sizes too small and then passed down to a sibling, it was a bought costume and that's all that mattered. Of course, there was no way my folks were going to spend money on buying a costume you would wear only once. I was the circus clown, the hobo and the obligatory mummy. Now days though, It seems just the opposite. You see the kids in a hand made costume and you admire it for its creativity, the time and thought that had to go into it and the ingenuity of materials. Nothing beats a home made costume and that leads to the QOD:

What was your favorite Halloween costume?

TUESDAY'S QUESTION OF THE DAY

By: ricderr, 12:16 PM GMT on October 30, 2007

Thursday, I take the QOD on the road, first stop “The Waffle House.” Now, there’s no way you can lampoon anything unless you first pay homage to the blog that brought so many of us together, Dr. Jeff Masters' WunderBlog.” I actually broke my vow of silence and posted in there last night. As most of you know, that is not the place to post if you are the voice of reason. I was quickly castigated, because I wouldn’t give into the doom and gloom that South Florida should discount tracks, models and the NHC and prepare for a beating. Oh well, I knew what would happen and I posted anyways. Oh, don’t get me wrong, there are some very smart people that post there. There is some valuable knowledge that can be gleaned by reading through the posts. But, we all know and love that in the Masters’ Blog, you’ll find the best characters. There’s the plethora of cut and paste kings. There’s every age, race, sex and creed of amateur met. There’s the guy that just a few months ago “was attending Miami U studying to be a met who is now working to save money to go to another college. There’s the guy whose story has changed dramatically every few months to a new and startling revelation only two weeks ago completely different than any other previous story. Don’t forget the people, who it seems their main objective is to advertise their websites. There’s the “groupies” that hang onto every word that a ‘forecaster” utters and praises them no matter how outlandish their forecast appears and we’d be remiss if we left out the fellow, who drinks and stays up all night keeping his watchful eye on the tropics. I’ll never forget his classic “There’s a storm 50 miles east of me and is going to wreak havoc and the NHC and none of you even care. (The blob disappeared by 11 am that very day.) Of course, I saved the best for last, love them or hate them, but there will never be another two bloggers such as STORMTOP & Gulfscotsman. One was the all caps, ‘written in stone” prognosticator and the other was a picture posting Jimmy Buffet off the wall humor I’ll call him Met Twain. They both helped make Masters blog what it is today and I truly miss their antics. I’m also willing to bet, any of these people if you met them would not personify the characters they took upon themselves in the Masters blog. Chances are they’re not much unlike any of us, but they’ve provided, at least me, with hours of entertainment as I’ve read and read their posts. Now, admin has done their best to curtail the antics of the Dr’s blog and I feel they’ve crushed the spirit (Yes, I’m entitled to my feelings whether or not you agree doesn’t invalidate that.) and so we can’t pay tribute to the characters at the appropriate spot, we can only do it here and that leads to the QOD:

What is your favorite “Masters’ Moment?”

MONDAY'S QUESTION OF THE DAY

By: ricderr, 12:23 PM GMT on October 29, 2007

Happy Monday to one and all. I'm sitting here, still sore from Saturday's roller skating outing. And am left wondering did I look like an old man on skates as much as I feel like an old man that skated today? And let me do my best to make a blog entry that no one can compare to something tragic. Yep, I'm feeling old and cranky today. And since I'm feeling old it must be time to reminisce. I've spent the weekend remembering my first job since Timbo, the oldest, just might end up working for his mom as a kennel assistant. 15 years old and will start at $8.50 an hour. Yep, I didn't stutter, 8.50 AN HOUR!!! To walk, dogs, feed and water, clean their kennels and clean the hospital. That's clearing about $150.00 a week. But at least Hu will be happy, he won't be able to get on the internet. My first job, non newspaper job was back in 1978. I worked in a gas station for $3.05 an hour. No overtime, no child labor laws and I worked the last week of school and then I worked from 12 to midnight 26 days straight before a day off. I was loving life with those paychecks, boy was I confused and that leads to the QOD:

What was your first job?

FRIDAY'S QUESTION OF THE DAY

By: ricderr, 11:46 AM GMT on October 26, 2007

Well, so much for trying to have a positive QOD. It sure didn't work out that way yesterday. I didn't even answer my own question which is ok because I can do it now. What we can learn from San Diego is that the main contributor to the equation for success is people. I'm sure there isn't a FEMA position called “Official Hugger." I doubt that the local government included hair dressers, nail technicians and masseurs in their disaster plan. Oh, we're all not stupid enough to know that you also have to have a good federal response, a state that is prepared and a local response team, an engine has to run on all cylinders to be a success, but what turns it from a refugee camp to a "Woodstock Festival" are the people and their attitudes. Also, yesterdays QOD was not intended to be for comparison between successes and failures, but I'm not going sit back and be politically correct and re-write history just because we're supposed to be sensitive in this new century. The fact is the New Orleans Superdome was a fiasco. It was a fiasco at every level, Federal, State and Local, but it's over. That was 2 years ago and San Diego hopefully shows that we're progressing at all levels. It's your choice, live in the past or focus on today and prepare for the future. I do have to say one thing though, for some reason, I think it's easier from those on the West Coast to move on and to be progressive that the East Coast. Maybe it's because they aren't as steeped in tradition as the East Coast. Maybe the history and stories for the early settlers and their pioneering spirit still lives on, or maybe I'm totally whacked and have no clue what I'm saying? (What, you thought I was going to take myself seriously? On a Blog? LMAO ) Oh well, I digress because what it does boil down to is, I like a success story and dammit we're going to talk success stories and that leads to the QOD:

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SUCCESS STORY?

THURSDAY'S QUESTION OF THE DAY

By: ricderr, 2:03 PM GMT on October 25, 2007

I like success stories. Anything from rags to riches to ones that make you see the good even in a bad situation. I'll pick on Amy and MP as an example of all that is good. Two strangers that met and are sharing a love story together. If I wasn't a bald, wrestling Yeti, I might be sensitive enough to share a tear of joy over that one. I've been spending a good amount of time reading about the Southern California fires. I remember the Oakland Hills fire and the thousands of homes that were destroyed. I drove through there as the fires were raging to make sure my sister wasn't affected. I know hurricanes and floods destroy homes and lives, but fires take everything. Pictures, mementos, there's no lifting things to higher ground, it's take them and run and kiss everything else goodbye. So, the success stories I read offset the feeling of loss I feel for those affected. Now, when I read about a success that can also transcend the fire disaster and the learned results can help future disaster victims, to me, that seems like a good idea to focus on and that leads to the QOD:

What successes can we take from the rescue efforts and volunteer efforts such as the San Diego Stadium Tent City that can aide future disasters?

WEDNESDAY'S QUESTION OF THE DAY

By: ricderr, 12:37 PM GMT on October 24, 2007

OK, By now many have got to be sick of the fishing trip. The stories and 50 cents will get you a 3 minute call to someone who gives a rats butt. If you've got a moment read STL's blog. I applaud him for writing it, but I think he's so far wrong in his ideas of what's important. I just blog to blog, having someone comment on what I say, doesn't define me. Having my blog on the top or not even on the page will not change who or what I am. In that way I am a total ass as, I just don't care. Seeing that he feels differently though, I might just stop in and say "Hi", because even an ass has to have a good side. What's the worst that can happen? I can be banned just like yesterday when I tried to join the hot weather talk in a blog. Oh well, see, it just doesn't matter. Oh, and by the way, we're thinking of an Orlando trip say Febuarish. Get your calendars out. Oh yes. I know, it's Wednesday rambling day where does the question come in? I don't know yet. Football is done. We had talked about joining a tournament in Jupiter, but found out its only one game. I'm not sure how you ply a one game tourney so we decided to pass. It's just as well since the first soccer game is this Saturday. At least the son and daughter practice and play on the same days. Now come November, in honor of days gone by and fallen friends, I'm taking my QOD on remote and opening the Waffle House. Bad humor is always good humor in my book and so that leads to the QOD:

What was the most "coke spewed on the computer screen," "your friends or family looked at you as if you needed to be committed," rip roaring funniest incident while blogging?

TUESDAY'S QUESTION OF THE DAY

By: ricderr, 12:23 PM GMT on October 23, 2007

So we're on the boat, Gamma is decked out not only in WUBA wear but Weather Underground wear as well. ( No, I was tempted but I didn't throw her in for the WUBA. I kind of figured she might put up a fight and take me with her. :-) ) There was a couple also on the boat and the husband asked us who we were with and as we explained it turns out that he and his wife are from New York and his weather station is connected to WU. We even saw them at the beach when we were bar-b-queing, but they didn't "share" their fish with us. Now yesterday, the question was raised "was everyone like you thought they were?" That question and the surprise by Gamma when no one new G00's first name showed me how differently some view blogs and blog friends and the like. I'm not pointing to a right or wrong, or better or worse, just commenting on differences that intrigue me. We're all different and groups of people are different and once we accept that and not feel the need to defend our differences things fall into place and everyone can have fun. Now, at this shindig everyone was different, but one thing did surprise me and that leads to the QOD?

In the picture below, who is it that has the whitest. most brightest, most sun deprived legs?

MONDAY'S QUESTION OF THE DAY

By: ricderr, 1:50 PM GMT on October 22, 2007

Well, I could say, I'm lucky and grateful to have been able to meet such nice and good people, but that just wouldn't sound like me. So instead:

Gamma, I really do agree with your philosophy that you don't have to like my friends but you have to respect my right to like them plus you've a bundle of energy and that's a good thing.

Bob, you're smarter than most give you credit for and that's a good thing.

Blu, It's nice to meet someone who puts their kids first and that's a good thing.

Rob, You're a kid at heart and that's a very good thing. You're baby will be very lucky.

MP & Amy, you two are a great looking couple and I couldn't be happier for you two and that's a good thing.

G00, you saved the day since we were fishless and although I will always call you a Tiburon Socialite, you're normal good people and that's a good thing.

Now, on to the QOD, we're standing at the bow of the boat as we were heading to a new drift spot and "SOMEONE" is asking what is the proper amount to tip the deckhands. We offer a few jokes and actual suggestions and this "SOMEONE" says, "but they're cute too, especially the one without a shirt." Now, working right behind this "SOMEONE" was the deckhand in question and this guys ears picked up, he slowed the work he was doing and leaned in closer to be able to hear the talk. We finally got "SOMEONES" attention and this "SOMEONE" wasn't embarrased, she even asked him his age and that leads to the QOD:

Who was this "SOMEONE"?

Wednesday's Question Of The Day

By: ricderr, 12:28 PM GMT on October 10, 2007

Ah, the joys of politics. Nothing like seeing Romney “politely” put down Thompson. as he made sure he let people know Thompson’s an actor and of course Thompson’s cutting but “ever so kind” reply that he thought he would be the only actor at the debate that evening. Oh, they may have sounded nice and sweet, but their eyes didn’t reflect their smiles, nor did their tight faces behind the smiles. Oh yes, they’ve been coached and coached well to look good for the media. Now let’s counter that with an example of me and Becky. We love each other and we love our family, but we know each other so well that there’s no need for us to use innuendo or hide behind a smile we just spell it out plain and simple and we don’t hide behind a phony smile while doing it. Now Becky, will also say that no matter what even if we don’t always practice it we should always be nice to each other and I grudgingly have to admit she’s right. Admin has also shown the same political correctness in their “Rules of the Road.” No bad mouthing each other in public, however last Friday they defined the envelope and said in their way that vague innuendo was acceptable. Well, maybe not so vague, but I’m in a generous mood today. So, I doubt there would be much argument that there’s much difference between “vague innuendo” and “spelling it out,” but vague innuendo” does make things look better and although I broached that aspect I’d prefer to not discuss it on the blogs, so today’s QOD:

Are you the “spell it out” type or the “vague innuendo” type?

Monday's Question of the Day

By: ricderr, 11:42 AM GMT on October 08, 2007

Saturday night Becky and I snuck out to the movies and saw The Kingdom, maybe the best movie we’ve seen all year. Of course all the other movies we saw with the kids so we might not be the best judges of movies. I was thinking about the cinematography of that movie while the radio was talking about the “Dirt of the Day.” It always amazes me that the majority of the people and problems they mention are about actors. Oh, they get the spotlight, they get the best tables at the best restaurants, they get prestigious awards but for so many of them, they’re an emotional train wreck either piled on the side of the tracks or barreling full tilt forward waiting for that next hairpin curve when it will be their turn to crash and burn. I’d rather have a McDonalds in a booth than to half to carry all that emotional baggage. In fact while thinking about this I came across a few items that caught my interest this morning:

FROM A DIRECTOR AND TEACHER WITH 24 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE
The minuses of acting are many. It is one of the most difficult professions there is. It is filled with very, very hard work, years of training, endless auditions, the tedium of rehearsals and filming under sometimes really awful, sometimes even dangerous conditions. There is no financial, social or emotional security - every. Every job may be your last. There is a reason people say "what ever happened to...?". Even the most famous actors can disappear from the spotlight and end up struggling for a living almost overnight, unless they are very talented, very lucky and work their tail off to find their next project. And, if you are lucky enough to be successful, you are always in the spotlight, with no privacy, subject to temptations and conditions that are filled with alcohol, drugs, and more. Actors are statistically more subject to emotional problems than those in most other professions. It is not an easy life.

CURRENT DRUG USE:

Clinical Laboratory & Technologists, Health Record Technologists & Technicians – current drug use – 2.7 %

Social Workers & Psychologists - current drug use 6.6%

Lawyers, Judges & Legal Assistants - current drug use 7.6%

Scientists, Science Technicians & Social Scientists - current drug use - 6.6%

Teachers, Librarians & Teachers' Aides - current drug use 1.7%

Writers, Artists, Photographers, Entertainers, Athletes, Designers - current drug use 14.9%

And So This Leads To The QOD:

Who Is Your favorite Actor / Actress?

TIME OUT!

By: ricderr, 11:37 AM GMT on October 05, 2007

TIME OUT

I won't be posting in my blog today. Instead, I'm going to be having an old fashioned sit in at 27's blog.

I have no problem with WU's "Rules of the Road" policy nor do I have a problem when they follow it up with Ignores and or Bans. In fact, under those rules I don't have a problem with their latest ban. However even though I can understand that my wild and envelope stretching blog would fall under closer scrutiny than others, I do feel that WU does not uphold their policies fairly to all and my peaceful, non rule breaking sit in, is my way of saying........................................

LMAO, my way of saying nothing. What, did you think for a moment I had forgotten my credo "It's just a blog and these are only typed words on a screen?"

I'll see you here either this weekend or Monday. Enjoy all. I will.

TODAY'S HERO

By: ricderr, 7:59 PM GMT on October 04, 2007

1

That's number 1 son. Almost three weeks ago, Mister, our german shepherd either jumped the fence or someone let him out of our backyard. We contacted Animal Control, Becky has every few days made the 50 mile round trip to the animal shelters in the surrounding areas, we placed an ad in the local paper and we passed out flyers to every house in a half mile radius from our house. No positive results from anything and at least I held the hope that since he's about as perfect a dog as one can be, it was my hope that he was at least in a good home being someone elses good dog. Not that if I found these new owners that I wouldn't have cleaned their clocks for taking away my dog without trying to see if someone was looking for him, but hopefully someone was taking care of him. Last night as Becky was heading home at 8 pm, she saw Mister. he wouldn't come to her and in fact ran away when she called. We and friends searched and resumed searching I early this morning, Becky later and a friend throughout the morning. No signs of him and last night and today have been torture knowing he's living on the street, hungry and likely to be abused or ran over. This afternoon, after Thee came home and before he had student court, he on his own, grabbed a leash and walked over to the vacant house where Mister had been spotted last night and there on the back porch was Mister and he ran right up to Thee and Mister is once again back in the fold. Yep, Thee gets whatever he wants except for that new X - Box

Thursday's Question Of The Day

By: ricderr, 12:45 PM GMT on October 04, 2007

Happy Thursday to one and all. Man I wish it was Friday. It's been a long week.

It looks like all are adjusting to the new look of the blogs. I don't particularly like them nor do I dislike the new look. It's just different. I do have to laugh at all those that were ridiculing some blogs as "My Space" because WU developers, in my opinion, sure did embrace the concept in this version. Not to mention the personal pictures that some are displaying, they make for a good laugh. Becky and I were also talking about how a few months back the rumor mill was buzzing with news from "reliable sources" saying the blogs would be eliminated. I'm sure the developers had a good laugh at that while they were crafting the blogs as we see them today. I also remember the rumors of how Doc Masters blog would be totally revamped and only allow two comments per poster. Someday I want to meet Mr. or Ms. Reliable and find out how they can so often be wrong and yet still be so darn credible. Of course, rumors don't just float here they float everywhere. I'm employed by a company that the "Local Industry Leaders," an alias of Reliable Source, has been said for years now we're supposed to be a week away from going belly up, yet we're still thriving. In fact, the company I used to work for was always spouting this information and the funniest rub, that company has gone from annual sales of over 50 million net sales to now trending to make less than 10 million. Their average salesman's income has dropped from 6 figures to less than 30 thousand a year. I guess switching ships might not have been as bad a career move as they forecasted. If you follow the "stars and elite," rumors always abound and that keeps the gossip magazines rolling in the dough and there's always neighborhood rumors about this or that neighbor floating around and that leads to the QOD:

What is your favorite rumor?

Wednesday's Question Of The Day

By: ricderr, 1:10 PM GMT on October 03, 2007

Thoughts to keep you thinking before sleep overtakes you at night:

Could the theory that the universe is flat be true? It expands out, but not up and down. And what's this ideal that there is nothingness where the universe hasn't expanded into yet?

What was the motivation that inspired the inventor of the watch?

Why is it that when a customer needs material ASAP you can just about guarantee it will be delayed?

Why are they allowed to have whole seashells in Florida fill sand?

What makes you love someone?

Oh that last one is a bigger. I can argue with Becky. Be madder than hell, but I love her. There's neither rhyme nor reason, nor can I tell you exactly when I fell in love. I mean. Let’s look at our resident love birds as an example, MP & Amy. What started out as us teasing two friends and the next thing you know I'm getting an e-mail from Amy when I teased her that I thought a younger guy might have a crush on her and she says, "oh stop, I really like Brett." Once I figured out who Brett was, I next was fascinated by the how and why. For Becky and I there was a day when POOF, there it was. Now, it's different with kids, as you watch this birth and you hold this living, breathing, fragile life, I was instantly in love with all three of my children and yes, I can be madder than anything at them and still feel that same love for them I did when they were perfectly innocent. And how do you describe love? Poets and writers try, flowers and rings are nice symbols, but only symbols. I know jewelers and letter writers try to make us believe it's the amount that's spent which proves its importance but although I like looking at the ring on my finger and I like that not many guys have a titanium band. It doesn't compare anywhere near hearing Becky speak the simple words of, "I love you" and that leads to the QOD:

What is love to you?
