What Abby and me see on our walks;
A T-33 jet trainer donated to the city. It came from training center located at Southport approximately 5 miles south of Portage.
From 1940 to 1990, Southport was known as the Canadian Forces Base, Portage la Prairie. At its peak, there were 495 military personnel, and 194 civilian jobs at the base.
When the Base closure was announced in 1990, Southport was established to manage and develop the site’s assets, and help replace the jobs lost to the local economy.
In 1992, Southport was successful in having the Military Flight Training contract, managed by Bombardier located on-site, thus facilitating pilot training for the military.
