The Northern Edge 49° 59

Cold Is Better Than Ice.

By: plapman, 3:20 PM GMT on December 31, 2013

Today will be sunny with a wind up to 15 km/h. The high will be -9C(29F). There is a wind chill warning this morning as it will feel like -45C(-49F).
Tonight will remain clear. with a low of -38C(-36F).
------------------------------------------------- ----
Abbey and me remain house bound in this cold weather but on the good side we have heat unlike eastern Canada which is still freezing in the dark from an ice storm a week ago. It sure will be a mess when the heat does come on and frozen water pipes that have burst spray water all over home interiors.
Manitoba Hydro has sent crews to help restore power in the Toronto area.

A Short Walk With Abbey

By: plapman, 2:18 PM GMT on December 11, 2013

Today will be sunny with a wind up to 15 km/h and a high of-21C(-6F). The wind chill will be -43C(-45F) this morning and -35C(-31F) this afternoon.
Tonight will remain clear with a low of -29C(-20F).
------------------------------------------------- --
I got Abbey out for a short walk yesterday. With the skidoo suit on I was warm except for my face. I've tried a balaclava but my glasses fog up.
Abbey enjoyed her walk even if it was short. She sure did a lot of sniffing as we took a slightly different route in town to stay away from the wind.
I've always wondered what information a dog is getting and what they do with it with their constant sniffing.

Good News For Abbey and the Cold is Ccausing Problems For the City

By: plapman, 2:35 PM GMT on December 10, 2013

Today will see a few flurries ending this morning then clearing. The wind becoming northwest 30 km/h this afternoon making the high of -20C(-4F) feel like -34C(-29F) .
Tonight will be clear with northwest wind at 30 km/h becoming light this evening. The overnight low will be -27C(-17F) with a wind chill of -36C(-33F).
------------------------------------------------- --
Our trip to the vet yesterday went well. The vet said Abbey may be epileptic and to keep an eye on her. She wouldn't prescribe and medication unless the seizures become often. I think the last one she had was over a year ago. I'll have to share my dilantin with her. :)
Otherwise she gave Abbey a clean bill of health with a strong even heartbeat.
The electricity outage never caused any damage at the granddaughters home.
The city had quite a problem to go along with the power outage. They had a watermain break. The break was located close to a Natural gas line and another power pole witch was in danger of falling into the excavation to repair the water line.

A Sick Dog and Elecrical Problems on the prairie

By: plapman, 12:41 PM GMT on December 09, 2013

Today will be sunny with a wind up to 15 km/h. The high of -22C(-8f) with a wind chill of -38C(-36F).
Tonight will start mainly cloudy with a 30% chance of flurries this evening but clearing overnight. The overnight low will be -27C(-17F).
------------------------------------------------- ---
Yesterday while were having supper it looked like Abbey has a seizure. Our regular vet doesn't do emergency calls so we called another vet in town. The man was very rude with the Queen saying over and over again "That Will be cash up front", the queen hung up on him. This morning Abbey will see our regular vet.
We also ha another problem last night. someone had hit a hydro pole and knocked out the electricity in the area where the granddaughter and 2 ggrandaughters live. The Queen picked them up and they spent the night here. I wonder if their insurance will cover collateral damage such as frozen water pipes if there are any.

------------------------------------------------- ----
yesterday I heard on the news that Brooks Alberta, which is close to my sister in medicine Hat had some of the coldest temperatures in the world. I guess the cold air is drifting east south.
Abbey and me stayed indoors yesterday except for a short time while I cleaned the end of the driveway of snow that the plow had pushed there.

Where has Global Warming Gone?

By: plapman, 2:02 PM GMT on December 07, 2013

Today will be mainly sunny with the wind up to 15 km/h. The high will be -22C(-8F). The wind chill this morning is -36C(-33F).
Tonight will remain clear with a 15 km/h wind making the overnight low of -30C(-22F) feel like -38C(-36F).
------------------------------------------------- ---
It looks like Abbey and me will be house bound again today.
I don't think even asking the ladies to the south of me to turn on fans would even help. It looks like our crisp clean Canadian air has taken over even the southern states.
I think global warming is turning into the next ice age.

Abbey and me stayed indoors yesterday but today I'll don the skidoo suit and get her out. The poor little 80lb beast is already overweight and laying sleeping on the floor sure won't help.

Moving Snow The Easy Way

By: plapman, 3:45 PM GMT on December 05, 2013

Today more snow with another 2 cm(3/4 inch) expected. Northwest winds at 40 km/h gusting to 60 will cause blowing snow this morning. The high will be -12C(10F) with a wind chill of -27C(-17F).
Tonight even more snow though small amounts are expected the wind northwest at 20 km/h will make the low of -21C(-6F) feel like -32C(-26F)
------------------------------------------------- --
Yesterday I lucked out, the daughter brought the grandsons over and they cleared my driveway.
Last night the Queen lost a windshield wiper on her way home. This morning after asking the SIL to pick up one on his way to work he installed it and cleared the driveway with the plow he has mounted on the front of his 4X4. It sure was quicker that even the blower could have done.
I just have a small amount left to clear along the sidewalk where the SIL couldn't get the truck.

Snowfall Warning For The Northern Edge.

By: plapman, 3:00 PM GMT on December 04, 2013

Today Snow with 10 cm (4inches)accumulating but the worst will be the blowing snow late this afternoon caused by north winds at 20 km/h becoming northwest at 40 gusting to 60 late this afternoon. The high will be -9C(16F).
Tonight will see more snow and blowing snow with another 5 cm(2 inches) falling. The wind will continue blow the fluffy white stuff as it continues from the northwest at 40 km/h gusting to 60kn/h(37 MPH). The overnight low will be -17C(14F) with a Wind chill of -26C(-15F).
------------------------------------------------- ---
Abbey got into Kramer's food again and was woke me out 4 times to go outside. I've taken Kramer's food dish and put it a carry kennel to keep Abbey out of it.
it looks like Abbey and me will be stuck at home today with no walk.
I hope the Queen has no problems on her way home after work this evening.
I remember leaving home in weather like this to go to the office in Winnipeg. The highway between Portage and Winnipeg is closed often as winter storms often bring visibility down to 0. I never had to stay in the city though. When the highway was closed I'd go around the gates and take a different route. Young and stupid.:)

An Update On the Seizures

By: plapman, 3:25 PM GMT on December 03, 2013

Today will bring periods of light snow with a north wind at 30 km/h gusting to 50. The high will be -8C(8F).
Tonight will see the periods of light snow and north wind continuing at 20 km/h as the temp falls to -14C(7F)
------------------------------------------------- ----
Even though the temps aren't that cold for the Northern Edge the wind will make it feel very cold.
Yesterday I had a visit with a psychologist. My doctor was blaming the seizures on anxiety. After talking with the lady for an hour that was ruled out. She said there are not signs of anxiety at all. She impressed the Queen when she told us she'd taken her internship at the Mayo Clinic. I guess my doctor will have to dig deeper into his bag of knowledge and come up with another cause.
I'd better get Abbey out soon before it starts cooling off too much.
