Moving Day and UW Still Has Problems

By: plapman, 12:40 PM GMT on July 31, 2013

Today will bring a mix of sun and cloud with the wind northwest at 20 km/h. Today's high will be a pleasant 21C(70F).
Tonight will be cloudy with a 60% chance of showers late this evening and after midnight. There will be clearing before morning. The northwest wind at 20 km/h will become light late this evening. The overnight low will be 13C(55F).

The granddaughter has found a place of her own to live. She'll be moving out today. I'm sure going to miss the noise the ggranddaughters make. When their gone out shopping with mom it's so quiet here I can hear the ductwork ticking as the ac starts and hot water tank coming on after using hot water. The fridge always seems to be running. I think the quiet plus the tinnitus is driving me insane. :)
The IT people here at WU must really be having problems, there are still no webcams in my area and the radar at Woodlands still shows down for maintenance while they both still work on my blog.

Abbey and me are back to our 2.5 mile walks again now that its cooled off a bit. Yesterday we met a man with a puppy on our walk. I went over so they could have a sniff and a handshake but the little dog was scared and shaking. The guy said his dog hadn't been around other dogs. I told him it was good to get dogs to learn that other dogs won't hurt them how to act around other dogs. Abbey wants to be friends with every dog she sees.
I just checked the radar and it looks like I'm not going to get a chance to cut the grass. :)

Yesterday I took the 2 ggranddaughters to the school playground just down the street. With school out for a month already their getting bored playing in the backyard. it sure is nice to have an area with slides, monkey bars and swings just a 1/2 a block away.
What I noticed and liked most is their is no racism with kids. In my area of town there are a lot of first nation people and the kids play with whoever is there. To kids a friend is a friend no matter what the color of the skin is. Racism is taught by adults who pass it on to the next generation.

Trouble On WU ?

By: plapman, 2:01 PM GMT on July 23, 2013

Today will be clear in the morning, then mostly cloudy with a high of 22C(72F) with winds less than 5 km/h.
Tonight will be partly cloudy with a low of 14C(57F) with winds less than 5 km/h.

What has happened to WU. When I go to my blog it shows my webcam working but on the weather page it says there are no webcams in this area. There are usually 3 mine, Selkirk and Morden. The radar always says the Woodlands radar is down for maintenance but its up and running on my blog.
I'm starting to think their server has been compromised. Is anyone else having problems?

Thunder Storms In Southern manitoba

Last night we had a severe thunderstorm warning. I was outside ensuring the eve trough downpipe extensions were in place, as sometimes the great granddaughters remove them, when there was a bright flash and almost immediately followed by a crack of thunder. I haven't heard thunder that loud since I saw a strike in the ditch beside the highway I was driving on. it turned out the storm only lasted minutes. Other parts of southern Manitoba reported golf ball sized hail, we were lucky as no hail fell.

A 40 Year Old Mistake

Tonight remain partly cloudy with a low of 9C(48F).

Yesterday I took advantage of the cooler weather and cut my front lawn. myself. Today with the Queen home I'll finish the job by doing the back lawn.
When we moved in to this house an uncle gave me a small tree to plant. What a mistake that was. As it grew I noticed a sucker coming up about 20 feet along the fence line. As the years passed I let another sucker grow. Last years hot dry summer must have put the 40 foot tall trees in distress as there's suckers coming up all over my lawn. I wish I'd had know what kind of tree it was when I planted it. My uncle told me it was a silver maple but after looking on the web this winter it turns out to be a silver poplar and have been banned in at least 1 Canadian province due to their aggressive behaviour. I contacted a tree removal company last fall and it's going to cost $6000 to have them cut down. Planting that tree was one of biggest mistakes I've ever made.:(

A New Bed For Abbey

By: plapman, 12:18 PM GMT on July 15, 2013

Today will be mainly sunny with the wind becoming southerly at 20 km/h late this afternoon. The high will be 28C(82F0.
Tonight will see increasing cloudiness near midnight with a 30% chance of showers overnight. The southerly flow becoming light before morning. The overnight low will be 20C(68F).
------------------------------------------------- --
The Queen and I have moved our bedroom to the main floor from the basement where we've had it since we moved in. It's taken Abbey a while to get used to the new arrangement. I had her blanket outside to air out and replaced it with a new one. She would move off of the new blanket and sleep on the floor with the new blanket so I brought her old one back in. She now spends the night on her bed. That dog sure knows what she wants. Right now as always when I'm doing my blog she's on the floor behind me sleeping. I think the saying "Follows you around like a puppy was about my Abbey.

Time to have coffee with the Queen.
back from coffee and the Queen's returned to her geneology project.
Yesterday while the daughter was over for a visit with her oldest boy I took the opportunity to ask him to cut the grass. If the heat and humidity hadn't been so High I would have done it. I've always said I'd rather cut grass than move snow.

A Power Outage On the Prairie

By: plapman, 12:23 PM GMT on July 12, 2013

Today will see a few showers ending this morning then cloudy. There is there is a risk of thunderstorms this morning. The high will be near 28C(82F).
Tonight will bring clearing and a low of 18C(64F)
------------------------------------------------- ---
Last night during a small thunderstorm we had a flicker in the electricity. It seems that every time that happens the local cable supplier 's equipment goes down from a power surge. When I called to report the problem I suggested that they install a surge protector or UPS on their equipment.
Both the Queen and me have A UPS and neither computer shut down.
With both the Internet and TV gone and being home alone I went to bed at 9:30.

First Crows Now Ticks. Poor Abbey

By: plapman, 12:00 PM GMT on July 10, 2013

Today will start mainly sunny with increasing cloudiness near noon. This afternoon we may get a thunderstorm. The high will be 26C(79F).
Tonight will be clear with a low of 15C(59F).
------------------------------------------------- --
Poor Abbey is being attacked by the big and the small. First a crow and last night while brushing her I found a tick. That little bloodsucker had managed to get past her tick collar. I've yet to see a use for them in the ecological system. Some other critter must fed on them I guess.
Looking out my window I see the neighbor across the street has acquired a camper.

Abbey Attacked by A Crow

By: plapman, 2:58 PM GMT on July 08, 2013

Today will be overcast in the morning, then partly cloudy with a chance of a thunderstorm and rain. The high will be near 27C(81F) with winds from the SW at 10 to 15 km/h.
Tonight will be overcast with a chance of a thunderstorm and rain, then a chance of rain after midnight. The low will be 16C(61F)3C with winds from the NW at 10 to 15 km/h shifting to the NE after midnight. There's a 40% chance of rain.
------------------------------------------------- --
Yesterday on our walk along the gopher trails Abbey had a run in with a crow. I heard the bird cawing and looked to see what was going on and saw the crow dive bombing at my poor dog. She must have gotten to close a rare ground nest or a chick in the tall grass.
I've seen a murder of crows attack hawks before but this is the first time I've seen a crow go after a dog.

An Old Beer Fridge

Tonight will be partly cloudy with a low of 13C(55F) with light wind.
------------------------------------------------- --
I never had a chance to post yesterday before the Queen got up. She had to go into work on her day off to check on a fridge someone had unplugged and was leaking water on a laminate floor. That reminds me that I have to defrost my old beer fridge . I'll bet that old beer fridge is almost as old as me.:) but it still works great. They don't make fridges like that anymore. I bought it used when we moved into this house almost 40 years ago.
When I finished the basement I even left a hole just big enough for it to fit in. That old fridge had better keep working as I'll never find one the same size

Shore I agree with YLee's comment yesterday. it was interesting reading though. Portage has an Allis Chalmers' museum set up at the local museum. It is the worlds largest collection of Allis Chalmers collection in the world. Here's a link to the site.
