A Walk, the Projects and Lessons For Kids By Furbys

By: plapman, 12:21 PM GMT on December 31, 2012

Today will be mainly sunny with winds up to 15 km/h making the high of -18 feel like -35 this morning.
Tonight will remain partly cloudy with a low of
- 23 but the temp will rise to -19 by morning.
-------------------------------------------------
I took a day off, this time with 2 F's, yesterday. but I did get Abbey out on a long walk along the gopher trails. She found a bunny to chase but met me at the spot where I leash her again.
I managed to repair an old DVD player that's been sitting in the hoard. It can now go in the what do I do with it now pile as both of my TVs have DVD players attached.
Today with both the Queen and granddaughter working I have 3 projects in the works. An old net book that had coke spilled on it, my clock project and learning how to cut and paste on the tablet using just the touch screen. I also can get back to the clock project which had been put on hold.
I also did some research on the new version of the Furby as one of them was being nasty and scaring the Granddaughters. I found that they can develop a personality. If your mean to them they will change to a nasty Furby. I told her no more hitting them or yelling at them or fighting with her sister. What a toy to make kids be nice to each other. No more fighting with her sister while Furby is around. :)
If anybody checks out the giveaway of the day software the Ashampoo Burning Studio is a good deal I have an older version installed an it works great but I think Ashampoo might be having financial problems as they've been lowering the price of their software lately.

Tonight will be overcast in the evening, then partly cloudy with fog overnight. The low will be
-17C with a windchill as low as -27C. Winds from the SW at 10 to 15 km/h. ---------------------------
Today I'm going to play with the tablet and learn a bit about the Android OS. If I can do it I'll post tommorows blog from the tablet.
Yesterday tried to change the non chiming quartz movement in the schouse clock I bought at a garage sale this summer for a chimimg one I have in the hoard. It didn't work.:(. The non chiming movement isn't sceed in placee but is glued or screwed from under the face and I didn't want to destroy the original. I'll have to keep an eye open for a nother case or come summer build my own.
Reading the local obituaries I see my generation is starting to die off. In the last month there has been 3 people I went to school with leave. I guess as long as I can read about the friends demise I'm doing good.
As I heard from a fellow sharing the liar's bench the other day, getting old isn't for sissys.

It was funny yesterday. Abbey and me took a short walk to a local mom and pop store and the lady was sayiing she was cold. I was wearing my wool lined leather mitts and my hands were warm. I touched her hand and mine were warmer than hers. I must be getting climatized to the Manitoba winter.
Today I'll brave the open spaces along the gopher trails and give Abbey a free run.

A Christmas Gift From the Home

By: plapman, 2:24 PM GMT on December 27, 2012

Today will be overcast with fog early in the day. the daytime high will be near -13C with light winds.
Tonight will remain overcast with fog developing overnight as the temp drops to -20C. The wind from the South at 5 to 10 km/h will shift to the WSW after midnight.
------------------------------------------------- --
I'm off to a late start today. i had to get the Queen and granddaughter off to work. Once again I'm in a totally quiet house.
Yesterday the washing machine decided to quit but not before it filled with water. Once again I had to recover a wet vac from the hoard and suck up the 10 gallons of water in the tub. Today I'll call the local appliance repair person and and see if we have to replace to 25 year old machine. What a Christmas gift from the home. it seems tat every year around Christmas some thing breaks own. Last year it was the hot water tank and the year before the furnace.

Hope Everyone Enjoyed Christmas As Much As Me

By: plapman, 2:30 PM GMT on December 26, 2012

Today will be clear with a high of -15C. The winds will be from the West at 5 to 15 km/h.
Tonight will be overcast. with fog developing overnight. The overnight low will be -26C with winds less than 5 km/h.
-----------------------------------------------
i had a great Christmas and captured the little girls opening gifts on the video cam then burnt the video to DVD. The girls got a whole family of Furbys. There must be 6 in the house now and they wont shut up.
I don't know which is better regular batteries or rechargeable ones. i wish they standardize the rechargeable battery ports and voltages. With the 4 cll phones, 3 tablets and 2 digital camera adapters i have a wall full of charging devices and have labeled them all.
The other day i did get my tablet talking to shared drives on my home network. The Queen now wants her tablet interface with the shared drives so she can do her genealogy research while minding the great great granddaughters upstairs when the granddaughter is working. I still have to find a way to connect to the shared printer.
Like YCD said a while ago, you could run a space ship from a small tablet.

Problems With Technology On The Prairie

Today will be overcast with a high of -17C with a windchill as low as -30C caused by winds from the NW at 10 to 15 km/h.
Tonight will be be partly cloudy with fog overnight and a low of -26C and awindchill as low as -35C. The wind will be from the WNW at 10 to 15 km/h.
------------------------------------------------- ---
Another short walk with Abbey yesterday. Though it wasn't that cold it felt like my face was getting frost bite. It's a feeling I'm familiar with. When I was a kid I used to go skating on the neighbor's backyard rink and stay out until my ears froze. it's good thing They didn't fall off. I've seen cats that have been left out overnight and the tips of their ears have fallen off. Kramer is always brought in when it's cold.
The Queen had decreed that i take photos or a video of the gift opening tomorrow. When i started having seizures the Queen bought an inexpensive digital video ccam. We never used it since as I always went to the ER. Yesterday I charged the battery and today I experimented using it. The little camera has options to record video as well as just sound or act as a still picture camera. At one time I used to be able to pick up a device like the camera and without reading the instructions use it. Now, as a result of the strokes, I'm confused at how it works but I think I figured it out. Today I'll read the quick start guide, all 32 pages of it. Technology is supposed to make life easier but for disabled people it's confusing.
Time to have coffee with the Queen.

Today will be overcast with fog this morning and a high of -18C with but winds from the North at 10-15 km/h will make it feel like -28C at times.
Tonight will remain overcast with low of -21C with a windchill as low as -31C caused by winds from the NNW at 15 to 20 km/h.
I decided to take the short downtown route for my walk with Abbey yesterday. The northerly wind sure felt cold on my exposed face.
yesterday while shopping with the Queen I waited on the liars bench while she waited in the long checkout lines. An old friend, whom I haven't seen in a long time, joined me and we started talking about our medical conditions. he's survived 6 heart attacks. We both agreed getting old isn't for sissys.
yesterday i dug a digital video camera out of the hoard to use to film the great granddaughters opening gifts. it sure will brighten up christmas morning having little kids around. Last year the youngest was 17 and it was just open the gifts and go on with the day.
Yesterday I got my tablet to find my home network but still can't access the shared folders. Today I'll keep working at it. Like the what will I do with it now light I constucted this summer I don't know why I want the connection but the challenge is there and I have to do it. I ave installed an app that will emulate MS Office so i can transfer word doca between them. The next step will be to access the shared printers from the tablet.

Another New Trail and a Short Story From My Past

By: plapman, 12:19 PM GMT on December 22, 2012

Today will be mainly cloudy with a 30% chance of flurries. The wind from the north at 30 km/h will become light this afternoon . The high today will be -13 with an afternoon windchill of-25.
Tonight will bring a few clouds and a wind up to 15 km/h. The overnight low will be -22 with a wind chill of - 29.
------------------------------------------------- ---
Abbey and me took another new route yesterday. We followed snowmobile tracks along the gopher trails to give her a chance to run. The track was better packed than the first trail I followed and walking was easier for me.
I can not figure out why people would pay thousands of dollars for a machine to travel in the snow then follow a well packed trail beside the road they wanted to get off of.
I lost all interest in snow machines after spending a couple of winters in northern Manitoba working with them. I once got bogged down in slush on a lake while pulling a sled with a 300 lb. drilling machine on it. it took me and my partner 4 hours to get back to dry snow pushing the sled by hand one push at a time.

Yesterday Abbey and me walked along the snowmobile tracks to give her the free run she enjoys.
On the way home we met up with the mailman and I had a long chat with him. I should get him to take Abbey with him for her walk.

i got lazy yesterday and never got Abbey out for her walk. I think today I'll take the snowmobile trails as the have a windrow on the west side and I'll be shielded from the wind.
Their going to have to invent a spell checker that can read minds. yesterday I meant to say home and hoe came out. The spell checker never caught it.

The Queen's Project

Tonight will be overcast with a chance of snow after midnight and an overnight low of -19C(-2F).
--------------------------------------------
Abbey and me took the full 2.5 mile walk along the gopher trails yesterday. She spent alot of time sniffing bunny tracks.
i never got to the projects yesterday . I'm addicted to that stupid Spider Solitaire game. So far I'm getting a 60% winning average with 1 suit. I've tried 2 suits but so far I haven't won a game.
The Queen has been working on a photo books through ShutterFly and received her first book a few days ago. The book covers my metis and German-Russian. HERITAGE. There is very little information on my father's family. My paternal grandfather immigrated to Canada in 1912 alone with $25 in his pocket and was followed a year later by my grandmother with 2 children. Their planned destination was Winnipeg but they ended up in Kipling Saskatchewan where my father was born in 1915. By 1920 the family had settled in Winnipeg.
My mother's side of the family can be traced back to French soldiers coming to Canada to fight the English for possession of Canada. Just a bunch of losers but their descendants have made a mark in history and have had a lake in Manitoba and a town in Idaho named after them.
Yesterday's protest ended peacefully with the RCMP convincing the protesters to leave 1 lane open on either side of the 4lane Trans-Canada highway for traffic.

Tonight will remain cloudy with a low of -14C(7F).
------------------------------------------------- -
I never got to the clock project yesterday but ended up playing with the new tablet. I've connected to the Internet with it but have yet to figure out how to make it part of the home group to transfer files wirelessly between my desktop PC and the tablet.
Abbey and me rook a new route yesterday. The other day, while chatting with the neighbor's wife she told me about a trail through a nearby field. There is a difference about what 35-40 year old lady calls a trail and what a 64 year old man calls a trail. The trail was a trail a following a snow machine track. With the fluffy snow we've been getting the track was still a bit soft. I had quite a workout by the time I finished walking the mile long route.
Today the aboriginals are planing a protest by blocking the Trans Canada highway and highway 16, which is the alternate route to the west coast of Canada.
It will be interesting to see what happens went angry truckers are stopped. I'm sure the RCMP will be on the site to keep the peace.

Abbey and me took the downtown route yesterday. That Abbey has no dignity, she relieved herself in the middle of someones sidewalk. It's a good thing I always carry a supply of plastic bags with me.
I played a bit with the new tablet yesterday. It's quite the machine for the price. I was able to surf the web and downloaded some apps and games. today I'm going to see if I can connect with my home wireless network and interface with the shared folder on my desktop computer.
I also have another project to start. This summer I bought a quartz schoolhouse clock at a garage sale. my plan is to replace the non chiming movement with a chiming one that I have in the hoard.

Abbey and me ventured out into the cold yesterday and took a walk along the gopher trails. I donned the old work ski doo suit and came home toasty warm.
poor Abbey ran along the shoulder of the road nd stopped occasionally looking out a the fields she loves to run in but stayed away from the snow filled ditches. Smart dog!
On our way home I saw somebody lying beside the road, he later got up and walked few steps then fell again. When we met i asked if he was OK and he said he had just slipped. I think the young man, maybe 16 or 17, was either drunk or on drugs. I stopped and kept n eye on him until he turned off the road we were on. If he'd have fallen into the deep ditch and got stuck in the snow it could have been serious as the lower part of the ditch can't be seen from the road. It's the same ditch the vehicle was stuck in a few weeks or so ago and has a steep 1:1 slope.

I played with the Queen's new toy last night and like the Android OS. I can see where it may give Windows atiff competion. Without reading the manual I was able to install apps, put icons on the home page and remove one that I had mistakenly placed there.

I've acquired a 10" tablet due to a mix up in online ordering at the store on Black Friday. I ordered 1 for the Queen as a Christmas present. When checking my online banking i noticed that I had been charged twice. After calling the stores customer support They agreed that I had only purchased 1 and would send a shipping label to return the unordered one if 2 showed up in the mail and credit my card for the unordered tablet. After seeing the Queen's new toy I have decided to keep them both. Talk about impulse buying. I can load the tablet with movies and games to keep me entertained on my next hospital stay if I have one.

i never got to the dvd player yesterday as the Queen kept me bust scanning photos for her geneaology book. While looking for pictures I saw that it was time to clean up my hard drive. i have as many as 5 copies of the same picture.
Going through hard copy pictures for her I came across an old photo album which has pictures of some of the constuction projects I worked on. The Queen says i should scan them and she'll make a photo book.
The Queen just go up, time for our morning coffee.

Tonight will remain overcast with fog overnight. The low will be -1C with a windchill as low as -7C. The wind will be southerly at 15 to 25 km/h.
------------------------------------------------- --
It was another quiet day on the prairie. I was going to repair an old dvd player that needs a new on/off switch but ended up playing alot of spider solitaire while the Queen worked. I'm getting pretty good at the game. I have a 51% winning score and am on a 6 game winning streak. I think it's time to move up from the one suit stage and try 2 suits but today I'll get the dvd player working and return it to the horde. When the warm weather returns next summer I should have a garage sale and get rid of some of my old electronic stuff.

By: plapman, 1:38 PM GMT on December 01, 2012

Today will e overcast with a chance of snow and rain showers with fog early today. The high will be neat 0C)32F) but the winds from the NW at 15 to 25 km/h will make it feel like -12. Chance of snow 40%.
Tonight will be overcast in the evening, then mostly cloudy with fog overnight. The low will be
-13C with winds from the North at 10 to 15 km/h shifting to the SE after midnight.
-------------------------------------------------
The freezing rain overnight has closed the Trans-Canada from Winnipeg to the Saskatchewan border.
yesterday I had a call from the local diagnostic lab for an appointment for another ct-scan to check on the pseudocyst on the pancreas. I sure am getting my moneys worth ,for medical care, that I pay in taxes. If this keeps up I'll break the government's health care piggy bank.
