A Walk On The Prairie

By: plapman, 1:29 PM GMT on November 30, 2012

Today will be overcast with fog in the morning. The high will be -3C(27F) but winds from the SE at 15 to 25 km/h will make it feel like -18C(0F) at times. There is a 40% chance of rain.
Tonight will be overcast with a chance of snow and rain showers after midnight. Fog overnight. The overnight low will be -3C(27F) with a windchills as low as -10C(14F) caused by winds from the South at 20 to 25 km/h. There will be a 60% chance of snow with accumulations up to 3 cm possible.
------------------------------------------------- -
I think I'll be sticking to the roads on my walk with Abbey. Yesterday I tried the city's snow defence trail again but walking through 6-10 inches of snow played me out. I guess I am getting old but just won't admit it.
Abbey is thinking I'm not going out there

A Cool Walk On The Prairie

By: plapman, 1:15 PM GMT on November 28, 2012

Today will be mostly cloudy with a high near -4C(25F) with a windchill as low as -19C(-2F) caused by winds from the SW at 15 to 20 km/h which will be shifting to the NW in the afternoon.
Tonight will be overcast in the evening, then mostly cloudy with fog overnight. The overnight low will be -18C(0F) with winds from the North at 10 to 20 km/h.
------------------------------------------------- --
Abbey and me just took the short route downtown. Even though there was just a light wind it was pretty crisp out there. Today I'll bundle up in my old work clothes and take the longer route along the gopher trails and give her a run.
I've adjusted he heating in the basement and it's a comfortable 22C(72F) in my room now.

Today will be partly cloudy with a high of -8C(18F) with a windchill as low as -18C(0F) caused by winds from the NW at 10 to 15 km/h.
Tonight will be partly cloudy with fog developing overnight. The overnight low will be -17C(1F) with a windchills as low as -22C(-8F) caused by winds from the West at 10 to 15 km/h.
------------------------------------------------- --
Yesterday I went to visit the vampires again for tests ordered by the doctor who gave me the ultrasound. The INR must be good as I hit the bottom of the test vial.
Abbey and me just took a short walk yesterday even though the weather wasn't that bad. I must be getting acclimatized. today I'll try a longer journey to check my theory.

A New Bunny Trail and a Warm Basement

By: plapman, 1:14 PM GMT on November 26, 2012

Today Will bring increasing cloudiness along with light snow beginning this morning. The high is expected to be near -9c(16F).
Tonight will be partly cloudy with a low of -12C(10F).
------------------------------------------------- -
Abbey and me took a new route yesterday. The city plows a couple of rows in the field beside the road Abbey and me use. Abbey gets her free run that way and i spend less time in the cold wind. i made the mistake of taking the first northern trail and had to walk through snow up to my ankles and in some places drifts 2 feet deep. On the return trip I moved to the second trail and could still see the grader tracks on the bottom. Not only is getting old affecting my body it seems to have affected my common sense.
Today i have to adjust the warm air registers in the basement. When we dud the basement renos last spring the SIL added a couple of vents to the basement as it was always cool in the winter. now it's about 15 degrees warmer in the basement than it is upstairs It's currently 85F down here and the upstairs thermostat is set at 72F.

Today will be overcast with a chance of snow and rain showers in the afternoon. The high will be near -7C(19F) with a windchill as low as -18C(0F) from winds from the NW at 20 to 25 km/h. The chance of snow is 40%.
Tonight will start overcast in the evening, then mostly cloudy with fog overnight. The overnight low will be -18C(0F) with a windchills as low as -24C(-11F).caused by winds from the NW at 10 to 20 km/h.
------------------------------------------------- -
Abbey and me stayed home yesterday but the Queen took be out shopping a few times. While in one of the stores I bumped into a gentleman who was on my left side. The Queen told him I had vision problems and even carring my white ID cane I got a nasty look. It's time to get the 1 inch ball bearing attached to the end of the stick so people pay attention to it.

More Snow and I'm Waiting For heavy Snow To Clear My Driveway

By: plapman, 12:49 PM GMT on November 24, 2012

Today will be overcast with snow in the afternoon. Thw high will be near -1C(30f) but winds from the south at 20-30 km/hr will make it feel like -19C(-22F) at times. There is a 60% chance of snow with accumulations up to 4 cm possible.
Tonight will start overcast the changing to mostly cloudy with fog developing overnight. The low will be -15C(5F). It will be windy with winds from the WNW at 20 to 30 km/h.
------------------------------------------------- --
It looks like the blower will get use again. Yesterday it was a bit too much of a machine for the 4 inches of snow but moving that snow by hand was too much for me.
The visit with the doctor turned out to be OK. I have a few problems internally that develop with age but otherwise all is good.

A Mini Storm and the Ditched vehicle is gone

By: plapman, 12:43 PM GMT on November 23, 2012

Today wil be cloudy with a 60% chance of flurries this morning. The wind northwest at 30 km/h becoming light this afternoon. The high will be near -10C(1F).
Tonight will see clearing early this evening but there will be increasing cloudiness overnight. The wind will be light at 15 km/h. The overnight low will be -19C(2F) with a wind chill of -25C)-13F).
-------------------------------------------------
Abbey and me stayed home yesterday. The snow and blowing snow didn't look inviting to me. Hopefully today will be nicer but the snow blower will get use today as I clean up the aftermath of the mini-storm.
The vehicle in the ditch has been removed according to my friend. Instead of pulling it up the slope the pulled it along the ditch to the next crossing then up near the culverts. I guess the next stop for it will be in for repairs to the underside.

A Bunny Chase and Moore on the Ditched vehicle

By: plapman, 2:12 PM GMT on November 22, 2012

Today will see periods of freezing drizzle changing to snow this morning. Snowfall amount 5 cm 2Inches). There will be blowing snow with visibilities at times less than 2 kilometres late this morning and this afternoon caused by northerly winds at 30 km/h gusting to 50. The temperature falling to -7C(19F) this afternoon.
Tonight will be cloudy with a 30% chance of flurries this evening. Wind north The northerly wind 30 km/h gusting to 50 becoming light overnight. The overnight low will be -16C(3F).
------------------------------------------------- ---
Abbey had another bunny chase yesterday. That dog will never learn that she has no chance of catching one.
The vehicle in the ditch is still there but some of the snow has been cleared from the road. I was talking to a friend who lives close to the scene and he said 2 tow trucks have been there but both refused to pull the van up the steep slope for fear of flopping the van on it's side. The only way I can see of getting it out without further damage is to use a crane, put saddles under the wheels, and lift it out. The retrieval will cost almost as much as the vehicle is worth.

Still Working On The Medals

By: plapman, 1:28 PM GMT on November 21, 2012

Today will be cloudy with a high of 2C(36F). Tonight will remain cloudy with a 60% chance of freezing rain changing to 60%t chance of flurries overnight. The wind will be northerly at 20 km/h as the temp falls to -8C(18F).
-------------------------------------------------
It sure was a great day for walking Abbey yesterday. We did the full 21/2 mile walk and she was panting after the first half.
Yesterday after many botched attempts at mounting the medals I called the regimental duty desk in Edmonton and was told the duty officer would call me back today. 10 minutes later I got a call from the duty officer who gave me the number for the regimental museum which is located at Shilo Manitoba. Today I'll call them and get the proper dimensions to mount the medals. In my research on the web it seems everyone has a different way of doing it but I would like to have them mounted the way the Canadian military would do it. That project sure is keeping the young ladies safe.

A Warm Day On The Prairie and Another Visit With The Doctor

By: plapman, 1:21 PM GMT on November 20, 2012

Today will be mainly sunny with the the wind becoming southerly at 30 km/h this morning. The high will be 7C(45F).
Tonight will start partly cloudy but becoming cloudy late this evening then clearing before morning with a low of -4C(25F).
------------------------------------------------- ---
What a change in the weather, yesterday was warm and sunny and today looks like it will be even warmer. The ladies to the south must have their fans in high gear, I have to thank them.
I had a call from a doctor yesterday for a follow up visit for the ultra sound I recently had. It's usually not good news when they want to see you after a test. Oh well, a new scar on the belly will keep the paramedics entertained. On my last trip to the hospital by ambulance the lady paramedic wanted me to undo my shirt to attach heart monitors. I told her she just wanted to see my hairy chest and she replied that it was the interesting scars from past operations, shingles and an accident in my youth with an angle grinder.

A Cool Wak On The Prairie

By: plapman, 1:16 PM GMT on November 19, 2012

Today will be overcast with a high of 0C(32F) but winds from the WNW at 10 to 15 km/h will make it feel like -7C(19F) at tims.
Tonight will be partly cloudy with fog developing overnight. An overnight low of -2C(28F) with a windchill as low as -9C(6F) caused by winds from the SSW at 10 to 20 km/h.
------------------------------------------------- ---
We had a light fog all day yesterday. The high humidity made it feel colder than it was on my walk with Abbey along the gopher trails. The cool air didn't bother Abbey as she found a bunny to chase and came back panting. I wonder where the bunnys go in the summer. We never see them in that season just gophers.
The Queen and granddaughter are back to work today and it's my job to pick up the ggrandaughter at school. I think I'll bring my vision impaired ID cane with me. Those kids have nearly run me over on their rush to get home.

Tonight will be overcast with fog developing overnight and a low of -4C(25F). The wind s from the SSW at 10 to 15 km/h. There will be a 40% chance of rain.
------------------------------------------------- ---
I'm still working on the medal project. It's been together a couple of times but I didn't like the results so I started over. Today I'll get back to it.
Even though it was a nice day with no wind Abbey and me just took a short walk on the downtown route. Today I think we'll head back to the gopher trails and see I she can scare up a bunny or two.
I've thought of my next project. Yesterday while digging through the horde I came across a set of lighted house numbers. I'm going to see if I can make them solar powered by using a few of the decorative solar lights sold in the stores. But I have to get the medal project finished before I start something new.

What To Do At 6:00 am

By: plapman, 5:28 PM GMT on November 17, 2012

Well I woke at my usual time, around 5:30 and got up. Without posting on my blog I thought what am I going to do now that is quiet so as not to wake the others in the house.
So the Northern edge will reopen with the dull tails of me and Abbey on our daily walk.
Yesterday Abbey brave the ditch crossing and made it to the gopher trails. The snow is about a foot deep out there and she was hopping along smelling bunny tracks. It sure is good exercize for her. On our last visit to the vet the vet said maybe Abbey would loose some weight with summer comming but I think Abbey gets more exercise in the winter as she fights her way through the snow.
The car in the ditch that I posted a photo of a couple of days ago is still there. With the city making a windrow of snow along side the road the fellow is going to have to rent a front end loader to get it out as well as the tow truck operator being very careful as not to roll it on it's side.

Abbey's Learning To Stay Away From Ditches

By: plapman, 1:59 PM GMT on November 15, 2012

Today will be overcast in the morning, then partly cloudy with a high of -5C(23F) with a windchill as low as -13C(9F) caused by winds from the WNW at 10 to 25 km/h.
Tonight will be partly cloudy with fog overnight. The overnight low will be -9C(16F) with a windchill as low as -16C(3F). it will be breezy with winds from the SSW at 15 to 20 km/h.
------------------------------------------------- -
Abbey has learned to stay out of the ditches. Yesterday on our walk I detoured through a parking lot so abbey could run free safely and she found a fresh bunny trail which she followed through the foot of snow until it came to a ditch where she turned and came back to me. On our return trip when we left the parking lot Abbey got on the wrong side of the ditch and wouldn't cross until we got to the railway tracks which service McCain's.
The Queen had some excitement at work last night. While working she heard a loud bang and hissing sound. It turned out to be a 3 inch steam pipe bursting. Luckily no one was was in the vicinity and scalded.

I've been thinking of closing the Northern Edge for a while. It seems that with winter upon us all I do is walk Abbey, watch TV and sit at the computer.

Aftermath of the Storm

Today will be cloudy with a 30% chance of flurries late this morning and early this afternoon then clearing this afternoon. The high will be - 5C(23F)
. Tonight will be clear with a low of -14C(7F)
------------------------------------------------
Yesterday on our walk poor Abbey almost got stuck in the ditch. As soon as I cut her loose from the leasch she tried to run for the gopher trails but sunk to her belly in the soft snow in the ditch. It's a good thing her 4 wheel drive got her out. I don't know how I'd get her out of the 4 feet of soft snow in the ditch.
Abbey wasn't the only one who ended up in the ditch.

This fellow will need more that 4 wheel drive to freel his car.

Moving Snow On The Prairie

By: plapman, 12:57 PM GMT on November 12, 2012

Today will bring periods of light snow ending this morning then clearing with 2 cm (3/4 inch) in the lee of lake Manitoba. The wind will be northwest at 30 km/h gusting to 50. Today's high will be -6(c21F).
Tonight will be clear with a low of -13C(9F).
------------------------------------------------- --
Yesterday after clearing a foot of snow from the driveway I almost completed the medal project. Today I just have to mount them on the wooden plaque and they'll be ready for display.
The snow blower worked flawlessly. Even though the driveway is clear of snow but the city has yet to plow the streets so the Queen and me are still stuck at home. The only traffic on our street are the 4x4s which are leaving deep ruts.
Yesterday as I was preparing to clear my driveway the neighbor called and asked if I needed a hand but I turned down the offer as I have the blower. I sure have great neighbors.
It looks like I have to clear snow from the basement window.

A Snowy Update

By: plapman, 1:22 PM GMT on November 10, 2012

Winter storm warning in effect.
Today will bring snow at times heavy and blowing snow with 10 to 20 cm(4-8 inches). The wind will be northeast at 30 km/h gusting to 50. A high of -2C(28F) is expected.
Tonight will bring more snow at times heavy with another 10 to 15 cm(4-7 inches) expected. The northerly flow of air will become l light near midnight as the temps drop to -6C(21F).
------------------------------------------------- --
I just let Abbey in from her morning trip outdoors and the ground and the Queen's car are both white. I guess by tomorrow morning I'll have to see if my repairs to the snow blower were good or not.
With the winds gusting to 30 mph driving will be treacherous. The Trans-Canada highway between Portage and Winnipeg can be really bad at times with 0 visibility. I remember driving into Winnipeg to our headquarters while working and the normal 45 minute trip taking 2 hours. I'm sure glad I don't have to make that trip anymore.

We have a weather warning in effect today for the first major snow storm of the season. The weather people are predicting 20-30cm(8-12inches) of the white stuff as a Colorado low passes through the northern edge of the prairie. it's a good thing I have the snow blower prepared.

------------------------------------------------- -
The Queen put me to work yesterday cleaning my basement. I had bits of cardboard and plastic from the medal project as well as old papers I'd printed off scattered about the room. Besides the residue from the project there was Abby's mess. She sheds year round even though she gets thoroughly brushed nightly. The fur she sheds is the fine guard hair and I get a brush full every night. I should open a felt factory.
Being so busy in my basement I never got a chance to take her walking but today I'll make time when the Queen goes back to work.

Abbey's First Bunny Chase of the Season

By: plapman, 12:43 PM GMT on November 07, 2012

Today will be cloudy with a 30% chance of showers this afternoon. The wind becoming south at 30 km/h this afternoon. The high will be near 5C(41F). Tonight will be mainly cloudy with a 30% chance of showers early this evening. The wind southerly at 30 km/h will become light near midnight. The overnight low will be )0C(32F).
Yesterday on our walk Abbey had her first bunny chase of the season. I wasn't quick enough with the camera to catch the scene. As usual the the big jack rabbit left Abbey in the dust. That dog will never learn she's no match for a bunny. It makes you wonder how foxes can catch them.
The other day I installed Spider Solitaire on both the Queen's desktop and tablet. I think it was a mistake, she's now addicted to the game. Last night she accused me of not doing my Dorthy Domestic jobs, but with 3 adult ladies in the house I think Dorthy desrves a few days vacation.

Yesterday while working on the medal project I realized that I've been making the project alot harder than it should be. I've been making the medals to be worn which will never happen. I've also been making the backing board so that it can be taken apart. With my new idea the board will be permanent but the ribbon or medals can be removed if they need to be for cleaning.

New Eavestrough On The Prairie

By: plapman, 11:59 AM GMT on November 05, 2012

Today will be overcast with a high of 2C(36F) with a windchill as low as -6C(21F) caused by winds from the SSW at 10 to 20 km/h.
Tonight will be overcast with a chance of snow and rain in the evening, then mostly cloudy with a chance of rain with fog developing overnight as the temps dip to 0C(32F) with a windchill as low as -4C(25F). Breezy. The winds will be from the SSW at 15 to 25 km/h shifting to the WNW after midnight. The chance of rain or snow is 70% .
------------------------------------------------- --
My eavestrough is finally back up. I kind of felt sorry for the owner of the company. he is legally blind and was trying to do the work himself. He finally got someone to give him a hand . I helped him align the rollers that support the trough as it comes out of the machine that forms it from a flat roll of aluminum then left. In about an hour and a half the new gutter was in place and he cleaned the leaves from the remaining trough around the house.
With the Queen home to keep me busy I never got a chance to work on the medals but to I'll get back to it while she works.

Toniht will be overcast in the evening, then partly cloudy with a low of -3C(27F) with ;ight winds less than 5 km/h.
------------------------------------------------- --
I did a bit of ork on the medals after taking Abbey for a walk. It sure is a bigger job than I expected when I started.
I think I'll move to saskatchewan where they don't have daylight saving time. Last night I had to change the clock on the microwave, the stove and the coffee maker in the kitchen as well as 3 clocks in the basement. It's a good thing I don't have any of the clocks in my collection running. I still have to change a couple more today. The biggest problem is getting the digital clocks all syncronized. The Queen complains hen she looks and see 2 or 3 dufferent times in the kitchen even when the difference is only a couple of minutes. Being retired even the day it is doesn't matter to me.

What a quiet Halloween last night. There were only 8 kids who came to the door. The cool windy night must have kept the goblins from being on the streets.
Yesterday I caused a major flood in the kitchen. I turned on the tap to clean a frying pan and not seeing that the faucet was over the counter on my left side I had water all over the floor. It took 2 large bath towels to soak up the water. having no peripheral vision on the left side sure is a pain.
