40 years ago today the Queen of the Prairie and plapman got married. The skeptics of the day said it wouldn't last. We had only met in January, we were too young. There have been challanges but 4 girls, 7 grandchildren and 1 Ggranddaughter we're still a team. I don't have any plans but I think the girls do. The oldest is coming in from the city, the midlle is picking up her son and I'm sure the mid youngest will be in with her family.

Accused Killer Returns To Court

A psychiatric assessment has been ordered for Vince Weiguang Li.
The order was issued today in Portage court, as Li appeared facing a second degree murder charge in connection with Tim McLean's murder on a Greyhound bus last week.

He was overheard saying "please kill me" in court.

Crown Attorney Joyce Dalmyn stresses the psychiatrist won't make the judicial decision whether Li can stand trial, but only submit a report. She notes that decision will be made by a judge through a hearing process.

Dalmyn says the assessment is crucial in deciding whether Li stands trial. If he can't, she points out he'll remain in custody, and his case will be reviewed bi-annually.

Li continues to refuse a lawyer, even though Legal Aid Counsel Randy Janis was in court. Janis notes a lawyer may be appointed, depending on the psychiatric report.

The assessment starts August 7th, and Li returns to court September 8th

It appears I slept through the brunt of yesterdays wind storm. I copied this account of it from Portageonline the local news page.

Early Morning Storm Brings Damaging Winds

During a storm this morning, wind gusts of up to 104 kilometres an hour were recorded northwest of Portage la Prairie.
The wind caused extensive damage throughout Portage and area, uprooting trees and downing powerlines. Environment Canada meteorologist Mark Melsness says the storm collapsed over Portage, causing winds to increase to damaging speeds. He says the system has past and Portage was the worst hit area. Southport only recorded wind gusts of up to 75 kilometres an hour, however the storm was moving northwest into the Interlake. Power is currently being restored although some areas are still without electricity. Melsness advises people to continue checking the forecast as there is a weather system in North Dakota that may reach southern Manitoba later today.

Damaging winds ripped through portage and area early this morning. Lori Judson lost two trees on her yard at the corner of Crescent Road and Tupper Street. She says she woke up at 7 am to the sounds of severe winds. She went out to her living room to look outside and saw white caps on Crescent Lake. The wind began to intensify and the first tree collapsed just feet from the window. A few moments later, the second tree fell down. Cleanup crews are on sight and attempting to get rid of the trees as fast as possible. One of the fallen trees is blocking the sidewalk on Tupper Street and a small portion of the street.

No injuries have been reported.

An unexpected storm tore through Portage early this morning, causing power outages that lasted for several hours. Manitoba Hydro crews are gradually restoring power now. There have been reports of wind damage across the city. Seneca Avenue in Mellenville saw several trees downed. Resident Ken Marek is amazed at what happened, adding the winds were very strong.
A tree came down in Erin Simpson's front yard arond 7:30. She admits being scared because it narrowly missed their bedroom window. Kirk Botterill adds a tree knocked down a power line causing sparks, which caused concern. The fire department repsonded and secured the area.
