A Winter Storm Watch is In Effect for the Northern Edge

By: plapman, 2:30 PM GMT on January 27, 2008

WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT
Today will see clearing early this morning with a high near zero.
Tonight will bring increasing cloudiness this evening and an overnight low of -12.
The forecasted winter storm advisory has been upgraded to a winter storm watch as a system tracks westerly across the prairie.

Portage la Prairie - Headingley - Brunkild - Carman
3:35 AM CST Sunday 27 January 2008
Winter storm watch for
Portage la Prairie - Headingley - Brunkild - Carman issued

Blizzard conditions possible Monday night and Tuesday.

The potential for severe winter weather exists over these regions.
...A Major winter storm is poised to sweep across southern Manitoba Monday night and Tuesday...

A low pressure system will develop over Montana tonight and track northeastwards into North Dakota on Monday then curve to the northeast into northwestern Ontario by Tuesday morning. This system is expected to intensify rapidly Monday and Tuesday as it tracks just south of the border. Although this system is not expected to produce excessive amounts of snow, it will be the heaviest snowfall of the month. Snowfall amounts will range from about 5 cm over the southeast corner of the province to 5 to 10 cm in the Red River Valley to 10 to locally 15 cm over western areas of the province. An initial band of snow will track through central areas of the province today and tonight with the main area of snow associated with this system moving into western areas of the province Monday afternoon and into eastern Manitoba Monday night. As this system tracks off to the northeast very strong northerly winds gusting to 70 km/h will develop on the back side of this system Monday night and Tuesday. The combination of the falling snow and strong winds will produce poor visibilities in snow and blowing snow starting over western Manitoba late Monday afternoon and over the Red River Valley and eastern Manitoba Monday night. Blizzard conditions may be widespread, especially over the flat terrain near and south of the Trans Canada highway corridor Monday night and Tuesday. Blizzard conditions should ease off from west to east Tuesday night as winds gradually diminish. However these strong northerly winds will usher in a return to the bitterly cold Arctic air on Tuesday. Extreme wind chill values of minus 40 to minus 45 can be expected Tuesday and Wednesday. A winter storm watch is an alert of the potential development of severe winter weather. Persons in or near these areas should be prepared for developing adverse weather conditions and should listen for updated watches and possible warnings.

Portage la Prairie - Headingley - Brunkild - Carman
6:32 AM CST Sunday 20 January 2008
Wind chill warning for
Portage la Prairie - Headingley - Brunkild - Carman continued

Extreme wind chills continuing this morning.

This is a warning that extreme wind chill conditions are imminent or occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions..Listen for updated statements.

A very cold northwesterly flow continues over Manitoba, due to a large high pressure ridge over the western Arctic, which extends across Saskatchewan and into the Dakotas, coupled with a strong low pressure centre in the eastern Arctic. Wind chills of minus 40 to minus 48 will continue this morning before moderating this afternoon. As the ridge moves eastward today winds will become light over southeastern Manitoba. Although temperatures will once again be very cold overnight no extreme wind chills are expected tonight in the Red River Valley as a result of the wind being light. However southwestern Manitoba may see winds strong enough to generate extreme wind chills in that area tonight.

As expected it was a quiet night with just me and the queen. The granddaughter went to work and a party after. The daughter went toboganning with the teen youth at the church and came home around 10. We watched a couple of movies and were sleeping by 12:30.
I remember when I was a kid the parents would go to my grandparents for New Years Day. They lived in a 2 room log cabin which my grandfather had built. It amazes me how so many people fit in that tiny home. The grandparents had 10 kids. Most would be there with thier children. There must have been 40 people in that place. My grandmother had a turkey dinner for all. There was an exchange of gifts done by the draw method. The festivities would start around noon and go on till 8 or 9 in the evening.
