Today will be sunny with cloudy periods with a high of 13. Tonight will bring a few clouds and a low of +3.

Churchill Polar Bears
These bears come into the town of Churchill in northern Manitoba. Churchill is located on Hudson's Bay. They are waiting for the bay to freeze over so that they can hunt seals.
When they become a nusiance they are tranquillized, measured, weighted and tagged. They are then placed in a holding cell awaiting an airlift to a safe location.
A Natural Resource Officer sent me these photos.

There was some early morning activity on the home street last night. At about 3 am I was wakened by the sounds of a siren. The siren went on for a couple of minutes fading then getting louder. I loked out the window in time to see a small truck with a police car in close pursuit. They were traviling at a pretty good speed. The siren continued for about 5 minutes before fading away. Hopefully the culprit was caught.

Me and Buck went on a geocahche hunt yesterday. The cache is only about a block and a half from my home. We never did find the thing. It is well hidden. The cache is apparently located on the MDC gorunds.

The following was originally posted in Geocaching.com by Trove Chasers

Located in Portage la Prairie, the” Manitoba Developmental Centre” is an accredited residential care facility for adults with a mental disability.

MDC dates back to June 1890 when the first wing was opened and known as “The Home for the Incurables”. Clients were old people, persons with incurable diseases not requiring treatment in a general hospital, paralytics and mental defectives. Landscaping and horticulture took place at that time which gives us many of the beautiful trees you see today. In 1890 there was accommodation for 57 patients attended by the city’s physicians. Overcrowding became an issue and in 1913 the east wing was completed and known as “The Old Folks Home” which allowed for separation of mental defectives from the old incurable patients. In 1924 the facility housed 410 patients and the name was again changed to “The House for the Aged and Infirm”. Patients were still attended by a city Physician.

In 1930 Government decided to make the institution exclusively an institution for the care of “mentally defective “persons. The aged and infirm were sent to various municipal residences and provincial sanatoria. At this time detailed medical records were started on all patients. In 1933 the Mental Deficiency Act was passed which changed the institutions name again to “The Manitoba School for Defectives”. In 1937 the long awaited Nurses Residence started construction and was completed in 1938.It housed 55 female staff. A training school in mental health nursing was started. In November 1963 the population average was 1,032. There were 425 staff employed with 404 in the department of public health including 5 doctors.

In 1977 a fire caused extensive damage, triggering a mammoth safety upgrading over the next 10 years. In 1984 the centre's name was changed to the “Manitoba Developmental Centre and the Welcome Home program officially started in October of that year. September 1985 witnessed the closure of the farm and dairy after 72 years of dairy history. August 1986 marked the closure of the School of Nursing, following 50 years of successful training of psychiatric nurses.. The Nurses residence became what is now the administration building.

The past 20 years have brought many significant upgrade programs to the centre. MDC presently houses and rehabilitates 458 mentally handicapped residents. It has a staff of 640 people including, 350 nursing staff, 60 other related professionals and 130 support staff. The Centre is committed to the principles of resident-centered service and continuous quality improvement and strives to enhance the quality of life for the Manitobans who reside there.
