Good Bye, 2012; Hello, 2013
It's the time of year that various cable channels (usually Turner Classics) and news shows bid good bye to well known people (and some not so well known) that passed during the year.
I thought that I'd say 'Good bye' to a few famous and/or influential folks that I think were special.
A special hand over the heart for Charles Durning, Daniel Inouye, Jimmie Begay and Keith Little for their sacrifice and service during WWII. Along with any others on my list that served and all tht passed this year, famous or not.
Just in: Retired General Norman 'Stormin' Norman' Schwarzkopf passed away today, Dec.27th.
Without further ado, here is the rest of my list:
Maurice Sendak
Ray Bradbury
Jack Klugman
Norah Ephron
Sally Ride
Vidal Sassoon
Gore Vidal
Neil Armstrong
Jan Berenstain
Ravi Shankar
Andy Griffith
George Lindsey
Mike Wallace
Ernest Borgnine
Dick Clark
Russell Means
Celeste Holm
Dave Brubeck
Marvin Hamlisch
Earl Scruggs
Doc Watson
Kitty Wells
Etta James
Frank Beardsley - his second wife's book about their family was the inspiration for the 1968 movie, Yours, Mine and Ours, starring Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda. They were the Dugger family of their day.
I know this is just a fraction of the famous (or not so famous) folks that passed this year but they're ones I find interesting. You can comment on these or add in others that you will miss.
If you want to browse a truly comprehensive list, there's one on Wiki: Deaths in 2012.

I got curious about Ernest Borgnine, so I looked him up at biography.com. Though certainly not a handsome man, I always thought he had the kindest, warmest eyes, and often wondered if he had a personality to match.
A couple of other people worth mentioning, who died this year were the Neil Armstrong, first man to walk on the moon, and Sally Ride, the first American woman in space.
We stopped this morning at a little Mexican restaurant in a farming town 30 minutes away and picked up some homemade tamales. They are the best I have ever had. We usually have them on Christmas Eve, but did not make it over there until today. We will have them for lunch. This will end our eating fest, on 1/2/13 back to healthy eating!!
Did you ever see him in the 1955 movied based on Paddy Chayefsky's Marty?
Watch closely; you'll see Vince Carter (Sgt. Carter on Gomer Pyle) and Jerry Paris (Jerry Helper on The Dick Van Dyke Show).
This is the ending of the movie, so spoiler alert!
The movie was enlarged from his 1953 live TV drama on The Philco Television Playhouse, starring Rod Steiger and Nancy Marchand.
I'm envious of calpoppy - my favorite tamale maker moved to New Mexico, and I haven't found anyone who does such a good job to replace her.
I just had to drop off this tidbit - President Bush has once again been assigned to the grave in error. This time, it was Der Spiegel, which really surprised me. They got it down pretty quick, but not until they got a few alerts from their readers!
I had to go look up carnitas. They sound delicious.
You must have some transplanted Southerners out there, if they're eating Hoppin' John.
I like the idea of adopting local, traditional cuisine, as it sounds like you have done for Christmas and New Years.
There's no law that says you have to have turkey and/or ham, with all the usual sides.
Branching out for the holidays makes a nice change.
Dad, his wife, Hubby and myself took a page from A Christmas Story and had Chinese one Christmas. No Chinese turkey, though, and no "Fa ra ra ra ra...." serenade by the staff, thank heavens!
We'd gone up to Myrtle Beach, where Dad and his wife had a time share. We got checked in, unloaded the cars, put the groceries away and SMom said she didn't feel like cooking, so "Let's go out to eat!"
Hubby, Dad and I shot sideways glances at each other but SMom decides she wants to do something, there's not much point in arguing.
I can't remember if it was Christmas Eve or Christmas Day but everything was closed. I mean, the place was DEAD.
We headed up Hwy 17 going north, driving and driving and driving. I thought we were going to end up in NC, someplace. We finally spotted a Chinese restaurant that was open. There were a couple of other groups in there, so we weren't the only ones.
The food was good but it was a Christmas dinner I'll never forget!
We had red cabbage tonight for dinner. A Christmas Story rubbed off on me and I had a cravin'. Fixed some potatoes and Italian sausage with it.
Dear Bug - I do hope 2013 is a very happy, healthy and safe year for you and your family.
May you find fun, laughter, Patrick Stewart re-runs.
The addition of raisins to the rapini gives a delicious taste. Rapini are somewhat bitter and the raisins provide a little sweetness. The resulting agrodolce taste is desirable for those of us who grew up with the combination. Just like life, agrodolce or bittersweet!
The addition of raisins and nuts to many food preparations is popular in Sicily. It is a carryover from the Arabic cuisine of centuries ago.
See you later.
Let us all meet each other with a smile, for the smile is the beginning of love.

I'm back, stumbling and bumbling around in that new system. And I've got a TON of work.
I will remain calm. I will roll with the punches. I will not go beserk and start flinging computers out the windows.
I love my job, I love my job, I love my job. Repeat 10 times.
Om mani padme hummmmmm..........
Sandi, thank you. I wish the same for you.
GG, thanks to you, too. Ah, Patrick Stewart reruns. You certainly know how to perk me up! lol
Pros, I will give that recipe a try. I've watched a lot of Italian/Mediterranean cookiing on TV and there's a good bit of that type of combination.
As you say, that type of thing came from Arabian culture, when the Moors spread across the Med.
India has it, too, from the Mughal Empire. Same culture.
I am definitely hearing fireworks - I'd better go check that out. The community show isn't until 9, which is more than an hour away. Maybe someone else is throwing a party and I missed the announcement!
Happy New Year!
ADD: This is strange. My comment "took", but you didn't bump up to the top of the page. We'll give it a little time and see what happens. At least I can read peoples' comments again without all the little grayed-out bars!
Gus nipped out the door, listened for a few minutes, then dove under my truck. I coaxed him in with the 'num-num' bag (Temptations). I was afraid an extra loud bang might spook him and I'd never get him back in. Like Thor, he doesn't seem bothered by them, now that he's inside. Poor Daisy would spend the entire night, hiding under the bed.
I see we've been chasing each other around the blogs!
I am about posted out, though. If I missed anyone, I apologize and you'll just have to read it here!
I'm going to step outside and see what's a-popping.

We spend January 1 walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives... not looking for flaws, but for potential.

Wishing you and yours a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!
Have a great 2013!
Have a wonderful year:)
Pat, love, LOVE the Peanuts gang!
Briar, what a lovely blessing.
Awww, Jus, lookit your kitty and pup sleeping together.
Sandi, here's wishing you a wonderful year, too.
Can you believe it? I managed to stay awake to see the New Year in! I did get a bit dozy around 11:00 or so but I made it.
I was watching "The Apartment," with Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine on TCM. It came on at 10:00. It was the only decent movie I spotted in the TV listings. If it had come on earlier, I'd probably have been in bed long before midnight.
Here's wishing you a most joyous 2013 filled with peace, love, prosperity and good health! May God bless you..
