Balking Tackwards

By: palmettobug53, 3:02 AM GMT on July 29, 2007

Most of you have probably heard of young children, siblings, creating their own special language. This is very common among twins. My Bubba and I created something similiar, when he and I were around 10 and 17, respectively.

Or we thought we did. As it turns out, the Reverend William Archibald Spooner beat us to it.

Spoonerisms, as they're now called, are words or phrases in which letters or syllables are switched. In Reverend Spooner's case, they were inadvertent slips of the tongue. Bubba and I did it deliberately, for fun.

Our mom would even get in on the act, at times. She was already fluent in Pig Latin, so balking tackwards came easy to her. She could even outthink us at times. A case in point: She said, "Uh, uh, uh! Don't you dare!", when she realized I was about to say "fitted sheets" backwards! It was rather hard to get the jump on her, when playing word games! LOL

Want to have fun with spoonerisms? It's really very easy.

(Some of the following are attributed to the good Reverend; some are not)

It was roaring pain this afternoon.

Wave the sails!

Life is a chair of bowlies.

Save a heat!

Go shake a tower.

Tears my whowell?

Where's my best pooking cot?

We'll have the hags flung out!

Reverend William Archibald Spooner

Spoonerism

What can you come up with?

Warning: Really dirty spoonerisms will be deleted!

Heat Wave! Weather Songs....

By: palmettobug53, 2:56 AM GMT on July 07, 2007

For a lack of any better ideas at the moment, I decided to put up an entry on songs with weather as the theme. As well as the fact that I've had Lena Horne singing Stormy Weather in my head off and on for the last couple of weeks!

Join the fun and see how many songs we can find! You can post YouTubes or lyrics. Do me a favor, though... If you post YouTubes, please state who it is and the song title. I can't hear the things, remember? LOL

Stormy Weather

Donít know why
Thereís no sun up in the sky
Stormy weather
Since my man and I ainít together
Keeps raining all the time

Life is bare
Gloom and misery everywhere
Stormy weather
Just canít get my poor old self together
Iím weary all the time, the time
So weary all of the time

When he went away
The blues walked in and met me
If he stays away, old rocking chair will get me
All I do is pray
The lord above will let me
Walk in the sun once more

Canít go on
Everything I had is gone
Stormy weather
Since my man and I ainít together
Keeps raining all the time
Keeps raining all of the time

I walk around,
Heavy-hearted and sad
Night comes around
And Iím still feeling bad
Rain pouriní down
Blinding every hope I had
This pitter ín patter ín beatiní ín spatteriní driviní me mad

Love, love, love, love
This misery will be the end of me

When he went away
The blues walked in and met me
If he stays away, old rocking chair will get me
All I do is pray
The lord above will let me
Walk in the sun once more

Canít go on
Everything I had is gone
Stormy weather
Since my man and I ainít together
Keeps raining all the time, the time
Keeps raining all the time

Lyrics by Harold Arlen

Good Day Sunshine

Good day sunshine
Good day sunshine
Good day sunshine

I need to laugh, and when the sun is out
I've got something I can laugh about
I feel good, in a special way
I'm in love and it's a sunny day

Good day sunshine
Good day sunshine
Good day sunshine

We take a walk, the sun is shining down
Burns my feet as they touch the ground

Good day sunshine
Good day sunshine
Good day sunshine

Then we lie beneath a shady tree
I love her and she's loving me
She feels good, she know she's looking fine
I'm so proud to know that she is mine

Good day sunshine
Good day sunshine
Good day sunshine
Good day sunshine
Good day sunshine
Good day sunshine
Good day sunshine
Good day sunshine

Summer in the City

Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city

All around, people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head

But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright

And babe, don't you know it's a pity
That the days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city

Cool town, evening in the city
Dressing so fine and looking so pretty
Cool cat, looking for a kitty
Gonna look in every corner of the city
Till I'm wheezing like a bus stop
Running up the stairs, gonna meet you on the rooftop

But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright

And babe, don't you know it's a pity
That the days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city

Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city

All around, people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head

But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright

And babe, don't you know it's a pity
That the days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city

Independence Day 2007

By: palmettobug53, 2:28 AM GMT on July 02, 2007

Independence Day.... a day for remembering how we became a nation. A day for picnics and cookouts, family, food, fireworks and parades. Some families make the week of the 4th a family reunion, by taking vacations together.

First a little history from Wiki: Independence Day

Some folks like to watch old movies, such as Yankee Doodle Dandy, with James Cagney:

Others like to go to concerts:

Followed by fireworks:

And we ALL like to eat:

We're just gonna be laid back and mellow here this week. Talk about what you and your family like to do on the 4th. Share some favorite recipes for that backyard cookout. Songs, Sousa marches, stories, history, poems, whatever your feel like posting about the 4th.

Here's a little George M. Cohan, to get us in the mood:

I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy
A Yankee Doodle, do or die
A real live nephew of my Uncle Sam
Born on the Fourth of July

I've got a Yankee Doodle sweetheart
She's my Yankee Doodle joy
Yankee Doodle came to London
Just to ride the ponies
I am the Yankee Doodle Boy

Lady Liberty Fireworks Don't have any fireworks? Can't get to the big display because of traffic?
