Well, Old Man Winter is making his appearance in grand style and leaving no doubt he's here! At least not in this part of Hoosierville!
We have wind gusts to 43 MPH, a standing temp of 1°F and a wc reading of -23°F. There are no birds at the feeder! They are all in the bushes. Like all the 'intelligent' life, they are inside, undercover, and hunkered down.
This is a true arctic blast. The affects are going to reach a broad area very quickly. Yet, nearly as quick there is a warming trend set for this area and points south next week. We could actually see temps near 50°F next weekend here in upper mid-north Hoosierville. !! Wonders never cease.
Keep those feeders full and take a good look around your property for those areas that 'need' cover. Then gather sufficient 'greenery cast-outs' from this weeks holiday orgy, to full fill the current need. Then look to planting living greenery there next season.
It's not the lack of food that leads to the death of most wildlife; birds, animals, insect and such; during the winter months. It's the lack of habitat! COVER! So plant NATIVE vegetation in your 'wild areas'. Don't add cosmetic vegetation that 'looks good'. Add the native plants, shrubbery and grasses that provide both the cover and the food to which the local animals look for survival.
Remember, food in the feeders, though a nice gesture in the eyes of humans, without the proper local habitat for cover from the elements, is nothing more than 'nature welfare'. Temporary at best, harmful at worst. Let's work to solve the problem and not just add another 'resource band-aid'.
¤BUILD HABITAT! ¤RESTORE HABITAT! ¤CONSERVE HABITAT!
The FUTURE OF WILDLIFE is ALL ABOUT HABITAT!
Keep warm. Be Safe. Enjoy your family-time and make memories to last the generations.

I really don't mind winter. Honest! But the one event that 'can come' with winter I really can live without is ICE! I do NOT like ice storms. I've been through at least a couple dozen big ones since I've been a member of the Hoosier Clan. And one is too, many. The current forecast is for upwards of 1/2" of ice accumulation. When they first told us about this potential event, they said, "Maybe 1/3"." NOW they are saying 1/2", maybe more! YIKES! That breaks lines a...

Over on aquak9's blog, she provided a great idea for preparing a 'ready-to-run-kit' for those emergencies when you only have a short time to grab the most basic valuable papers and information. A great list and idea aquak9! Such thinking ahead and planning is good for anyone in anyplace; even for those of us who are NOT in Hurricane Harm's Way. We here in Hoosierville deal with the Whirleycanes most folks just call 'em tornadoes. Now even though y'all in the hurr...

Hei .. a new look and feel at the WUworld of Weather! Cool. Very nice guys and gals. This is really slick. Hey, I love the drop-down window Quick Search! Great idea for freeing up page space and putting MY STUFF in a neat one-point location! Cool!!Of course there was a bit of a curve in getting used to getting around the place. But, that happens when you move the clothesline in the backyard. That, is unless your neighborhood has a writ against such things: c...

For me, MATH IS a 4 Letter Word! and my mamma told me to steer clear of them!! I didn't do everything my mother told me to avoid - I really should have - but I didn't. But I didn't have any problem steering clear of MATH. That is until I decided to return to get a degree in 1990.The very word Calculus was terrifying to me. I have a friend who, when his little sister - in high school at the time - came to visit, would just sit and talk MATH equations for hours. ...
