04222015 Weather Station now fixed!

By: nobyter, 1:01 PM GMT on April 22, 2015

Wow, my weather station is almost 10 years old! I have a Davis Vantage Pro 2 station that had problems with the capacitor since 2011... I had replaced the capacitor over a year ago, but must have messed up one of the leads when soldering. It failed and now after carefully putting in another one, I think I have it fixed. I also bought a complete remote module with the solar panel, circuit board, and enclosure (~$250). Now I have a new backup just in case... I ...

02-12-14 Snow Dangerous

By: nobyter, 10:54 PM GMT on February 12, 2014

Local VDOT has a thick coating of salt brine on the roads and I saw at least 6 salt plow trucks waiting for this to start. I wonder what people are thinking when they say they didn't know it would get this bad. They were warned... This will get dangerous to all that don't heed the warning! I think we'll get snowed-in.

What kind of weather/webcam?

By: nobyter, 5:53 PM GMT on January 21, 2014

I was asked by a fellow weather watcher, what kind of weather station and/or webcam to buy... Here was my reply:

I also use a weatherplug network computer to store and forward information to Wunderground, CWOP, and APRS FTP...

Polar Vortex creeping in

By: nobyter, 9:43 PM GMT on January 06, 2014

Bring in your dogs, check outdoor spigots, cover well heads, check vehicle antifreeze, and get the firewood! This is going to cause problems we haven't seen in a while... I'm thinking of leaving a drip just so the line from the well doesn't get frozen. A lot of people will have busted pipes and frozen radiators with this chiller. I just wonder if we'll break the "zero" barrier. I remember having a "frost free" spigot that had a hose attached and it backed up into...

Station Problems

By: nobyter, 10:32 PM GMT on December 22, 2013

Having battery problem with station. Seems like it only works on solar during the day. Will replace battery soon. The super capacitor on the main board is probably bad, making the replaceable battery run out faster. If it is the super cap, I may be down a day or two to fix.
