Rockfish, VA BLOG!

Okay, I now believe that the world is coming to an end. I just learned that the ONLY Internet service other than dialup or hughes-r-net is ending in 11 days. Hughes Net left a bad taste in my mouth and a hole in my wallet. I don't even fathom going to dialup. It would cost more money than I am paying now to get an extra line and pay for ISP service. So, "Walton's Mountain" (well, Rockfish, Va) is going backward in a technological timeline. The BPL (Broadband over Power Line) which was not the best (see some of my previous entries), but it was the ONLY way we had to a decent connection. What's next? Electrictity to Hand Cranks? We don't have cell phone service here either(that part I kinda like). I'm sure one of my neighbors shot that Verizon guy when he said "can you hear me now?" and that is why we are in the "not hot spot". If I'm not on Wunderground in the future, it's because my carrier pigeon got shot for dinner...

First there was a drought, then a flood, then a quake, and soon we may have a 'cane? I think I'm going to start praying more... What's next, locusts? We just experience our first "strong" earthquake here in Virginia. It was like a big heavy truck was driving over the school. At first I heard the roar, then I felt the up and down motion, then it subsided. Just a 5.8, but the most I've felt in the last 30 years. Strongest in over 100 years in VA. Don't think I co...

Okay, on Saturday, August 13th, I was walking on the river (not getting wet)hunting unusual rocks. I was yelling at the dog to stay out of stagnate pools of water that didn't look healthy. I've seen the river worse in 10 years, but it was starting to worry me. I wish I took before pictures... Then we got over 2 inches of rain and they got a lot more up river over Saturday night and this is what I saw when I went out with the dog...The first picture is the second ...

I wish I had taken pictures Friday at 7 pm... Yesterday, I smelled smoke that was like an electrical fire. When I went outside, I could see smoke hovering in the hollow from the south west. I also thought that it smelled like a swamp fire. Turns out that I was smelling both! The Great Dismal Swamp has a fire in Va. Locally, they said a house to the south west was also burning on a controlled burn. I'm kind of surprised that they didn't have a air quality warnin...

Wow, try to get some mowing done and you’re caught in a storm. I thought I checked the satellite before the dog and I went out this afternoon… Luckily, there wasn’t any hail with it. I started feeling big wet raindrops and flipped the Craftsman riding mower into high gear and aimed for the shed. It only accumulated .35 inches in around 10 minutes, but I was out there for the first five! There weren’t any electrical displays, but I heard far off rumbling...
