Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, August 23, 2014

An area of low pressure will move across the northern tier of the country on Saturday, while a cold front will extend from the central Plains to the Mid-Atlantic.

A strong low pressure system will trek eastward over the upper Intermountain West and the northern Plains. As this system interacts with warm, muggy air over the nation’s midsection, strong to severe thunderstorms will develop from the upper Intermountain West to the upper Mississippi Valley. Severe thunderstorms will be possible over southeast North Dakota, northeast South Dakota and western Minnesota. These thunderstorms will be capable of producing large hail, dangerous straight line winds and isolated tornadoes. In addition, heavy rain associated with these thunderstorms will bring a chance of flash flooding to eastern South Dakota and southwest Minnesota. Heavy rain will also bring a threat of flash flooding to northeast Idaho and Montana. Just to the south, monsoonal thunderstorms will be possible over the central and southern Rockies, as well as the central high Plains. The West Coast will stay clear of wet weather due to a ridge of high pressure over the eastern Pacific.

Meanwhile, a cold front will extend across the central Plains, the Ohio Valley, the Tennessee Valley and the Mid-Atlantic. Rain and thunderstorms will develop along this frontal boundary over a handful of states. The strongest storms will focus over the southern Ohio Valley, the Tennessee Valley and the Mid-Atlantic. Rainy weather will also be possible over parts of New England. An onshore flow from the Gulf of Mexico will trigger isolated thunderstorms over the eastern Gulf Coast and the Southeast, while the western Gulf Coast and the southern Plains will stay clear of precipitation.
