Hi, Mobal,

Happy Birthday to you! Hope the day was filled with good things - like your snakes! They're beautiful...

See if you can't stretch the celebrations out a day or two. A single day's never enough for a birthday!

Mobal,

You always need to watch out when a liberal like me starts out a phrase "with all due respect."

With all due respect, Rev. Boetcker was a scarred man and one who clearly sided with the industrialist powers of the time. Having watched his father in Germany come home badly mauled by workers in germany who were striking (which strikes were pretty violent back then since they were paid a wage slightly less than slave wages), his mindset was framed ever since. He emigrated to America (yep, one of those foreigners taking American jobs again), studied and became a Presbyterian minister. His worldviews remained firmly entrenched with the "bosses" his whole life.

So, there is nothing wrong directly with Rev. Boetcker's statements. However, he used them to advocate, passionately, against the right to organize, a big subject in Illinois in 1916 when he penned these beauties. Morally, athough this seemed fine at the time (along with poll taxes, segregation, Jim Crow laws, sweatshops, minimum wage laws set at $0.00 per hour, etc.), it is somewhat antiquated now. Even my most die-hard conservative friends agree that a worker should be entitled to a decent wage. Few believe that greed and corruption, among the wealthy or anywhere, should be tolerated. So, if a worker "tears down" his boss by insisting on a wage which will allow him/her, in a 40-50 hours work week, to feed, clothe and shelter his family, is that wrong? I don't think so. Houston, for example, is teeming with apartments where 3-4 families live in one apartment, doing so because their primary/total wage earners do not make enough to allow an individual family a place of their own. The government gives out very minimal assistance, yet our government has no problem stepping in and bailing out hedge funds and investment bankers who might lose their investments. That is my problem with the system. We do not focus on the individual or the weak, we focus on the organizations and the powerful.

I appreciate you posting this. I profoundly disagree with you, but understand your point and welcome the chance to visit oh so briefly about this. Now I have to leave for trial.

Peace
