The way I feel about last night's forecast and what actually ended up happening was well-expressed last year in an excellent post by Dr. Chuck Doswell from the University of Oklahoma . . . the passing of over a year hasn't dated this post one bit. 



And from the National Weather Service, here are some wintry statistics for Huntsville and the Shoals.



DISCUSSION:





















So it was overcast, cold, and windy in the Tennessee Valley today. The High came earlier this morning at 53, and now it's at 32 degrees which is our Low so far for Cullman. Winds have gusted from 20-30 mph from time to time. There was some light drizzle and snow flurries in spots. Apparently there was enough snow in parts of Tennessee to cause a few travel problems, so here is a nifty site to check out road conditions up that way.





So there were several tornadoes in South Alabama yesterday and even some reports of wind damage up into Central Alabama. Several tornadoes reported back in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas as well. While Alabama escaped without fatalities, I'm sorry to say that I heard of at least seven deaths in these other states. We are fortunate that the warm front did not rise as far north as expected, as I suspect the event would have been more widespread and perhaps caused more people to get hurt or even killed. The grinch stole Christmas to an extent, but not completely. One forecaster I admire noted that, "Such a low death toll from this sort of setup was a Christmas miracle, if there ever was one." Still, very saddening to me . . . tornado fatalities just shouldn't happen on Christmas, call me sentimental if you like.













 Tonight will be cold, temperatures dipping into the upper 20's, and tomorrow looks nice and sunny but pretty chilly, with temperatures barely making it into the mid 40's. It's winter, after all.









On Friday clouds start to increase again as another low pressure system moves in from the south and west. No severe weather around here with this one. It's going to stay too cold for that. Still temperatures should rise into the lower 50's, and there is a chance for showers even during the day, but I'd say later in the day and probably mostly overnight.









Saturday we're clearing out again, and high pressure starts to set in from the west. I guess we could have some lingering showers in the morning, but I think overall it's a mostly sunny day. Highs dipping back down into the 40's.









High pressure really sets in on Sunday with northwest wind flow, and we're just clear and fairly cold. Going with a High in the mid'40's and a Low in the mid-to-upper 20's. It's winter, after all.



Now, model guidance between the GFS and ECMWF gets a little murky for New Year's Eve night/New Year's Day, but it looks like there's a small chance of showers with moderate temperatures, like 50's for highs and 30-ish for lows. Wishing everybody reading a happy new year. We got through the Mayan

"apocalypse" and Christmas tornadoes just fine . . . 2013 can be a good year indeed.





And over the next week, we might see a total of about an inch of rain.

P.S. Forgot to mention this somehow, but the combination of some standing water from today/last night and the colder temperatures tonight may cause some slick spots on the roads, esp. on bridges and such.

Christmas Severe Weather Event!?

Christmas: Severe thunderstorms likely, including potential for tornadoes. Although most of the severe weather will likely occur during the overnight hours going into Wednesday morning, some could start as early as mid-afternoon Christmas Day. High 70, Low 43
