06:50, 49f, raining. roosters hollaring. too dark to see if hen's o.k. but I suspect not. the continous damp and cold has taken a toll of farm critters. soaked guardian lying under oak in front. 20 ft. to the north and she could be under the porch roof. why does she insist on sitting in the rain? brief walk with pup; she wants to go back inside. go figure.. scrambled eggs for breakfast. got a fire going.
09:30, 52f, raining. hay to all. quiet in the barn except for munching. all dogs got scrambled eggs. actually convinced guardian to seek shelter in front but after the eggs she's out perusing the yard. pup in front of fire inside. certainly makes house more habitable. living room temperature, 60! back rooms low 50's. no way a wash would get dry today.
18:10, 54f. pretty much rained/drizzled all day. after 15:00 the lulls in the rain got longer. got 2 eggs. little red hen dead in other chicken coop. big red rooster is a widower. all herbivores got hay. donkeys were happy. sheep tucked right in. had guardian in house during down pours. dried her off pretty much (took 2 towels) and she went to sleep by a heater. let her out when rain slowed to a strong mist as she got up and was waiting by back door. pup was excited that she was inside but admirably restrained herself.
20:40, 54f, mist/fog. waxing gibbous moon above the farm house, often obscured by clouds. some clearing. pleasant walk down lane with pup and guardian. yellow jasmine flowers spangling the lane. noticed pollen cones on one cedar. some plants just can't wait..

By: marsHen, 12:33 PM GMT on February 07, 2014

05:50, 49f, overcast snd wet out. roosters crowing. lil red hen feeling puny in a corner.. damn. got 3 eggs from other hen house. all quiet in barn, hay to all. guardian guarding her dinner from crows. pup wants to play, spots some deer, is frustrated into a barking fit. another day...
08:00, low tide falling at CK. NE wind, 8 knts, 48f. clear. even with a falling tide we are going out sampling the fishes between the out islands and cedar key proper, and around rattlesnake key, hoping to stay in the channels and not run aground and have to sit there all day. catches were low. we fished with the bait seine which caught YOY mullet, pinfish, and spot and some large breeding size Menidia, silversides, around 100 mm long. 3 sets with the 600 ft. seine pulled in little more than a few flounder, some pinfish, 2 atlantic stingrays, and one redfish. a lot of work for small catches which were measured, counted, and returned to the water, but no data is data.
water temperatures hovered around 55f, chilly through our waders. wind was chilly all day, kicked up a chop, and the birds huddled around oyster bars. cormorants, white pelicans, brown pelican, oyster catchers, gulls, and several large flocks of ducks were the sightings for today. tide turned around 13:00, and the wind picked up. we were gratified not to havea to work in thick mud but did have to pick our way through oyster bars. ho-hum.. someone has to do it.
15:00, low tide rising at CK. great egrets in the marsh. NE wind, 12-14 knts. 53f. a mist rising. shrimp guy was out! he's been ill. stopped and bought some shrimp for the friend who helped put in the dog-leg fence in the dark on the sheep yard perimeter a few days ago. got some for myself, too.
17:30, 55f, overcast. foggy, very damp. boiled shrmp with key lime sauce! did chores. hay to all. guardian off on her own in back. pup disliking the damp mist. a few deer stealthily moving through the donkey woodlot. pup sees 'em..
20:40, 54f. fog and mist swirling in my head lamp light. very strange. no moon. no stars. just tiny droplets of water that have dampened everything.
fire in fireplace. smoke from chimney brings memories of my childhood by the sea.. tired.

05:40, 52f, overcast. roosters crowing. guardian sleeping in front. pup wants to play. not now.. pup spots deer in donkey woodlot.
09:00, blow-out tide falling on the suwannee river. 48f, NE wind, 10 knts. sampling the fishes of the suwannee river delta from cat island to mcgriff then up the river to do boat sets since tide was too low to get to 4 sites up north by bumblebee.. catches were low and the bait seine catches mirrored the catches from earlier this week with the additions of a few hundred young-of-the-year
mullet less than 2 inches long. big seine's catches were low also - a few juvenile trout, pinfish, and a lady fish at cat isl. and 2 large channel cats at mcgriff. the weather wasn't pleasant - gray, cold, an occasional light rain, overcast and no sun. a light chop and tricky navigating across the shallows to cat. water temperature in upper 50's felt cold. poor visibility due to tannin staining the water. over-the-ankles mud that could suck your boots off. we did a lot of muddy sets due to the low tide. not many birds. brown pelicans, cormorants, ducks out by the reefs.
14:30, tide coming in on river, NE wind, 8 knts. 53f. a rough day but beautiful out on the river with the leafless silver-trunked trees and the golden encompassing marsh grasses,
17:40, 56f, overcast and drizzling. beef is for supper. shared with pup. hay to all. lambs playing in barn. been chilly all day.
20:00, raining hard. waiting for lull to feed dogs.
21:30, 48f, overcast, foggy. probably will rain a bit more. rain held up dog's dinner. guardian barking behind workshop. pup ready to go inside and leave the cold puddles..

12:00, 70f, down from 72 at 11:30. overcast and foggy. brief rain shower just passed over. kinda gloomy out. thinking I will hang out a wash .. gotta have clean clothes. got 2 eggs.
17:40, 67f, mostly cloudy. fed herbivores. discovered a huge limb on the corner of the sheep pasture abutting the donkey pasture. entire corner mashed flat. called a friend. getting dark. loaded wire, metal posts, hammer, staples, shovel in truck and made a new fence line. set it up in the truck's headlights.
20:50, 63f, partly starry, partly cloudy. waxing horned moon making an occasional appearance over donkey woodlot. quiet in the barn.. good night moon.

05:40, 62f. very foggy. woke roosters up. guardian sleeping in front. pup woke her up. brief walk with both. guardian heading down east lane barking. pup not allowed to follow. packing a lunch..
09:00, low tide ebbing at suwannee river. south wind, 2 knts. 58f. foggy. no-see-ums out in full force. fog so thick the north bank is obscured from the south bank. heading out mcgriff pass to trawl and do offshore sets with the bait seine. oyster and shell bars on either side of pass full of seagulls and cormorants resting. heaps of filamentious green algae collecting in shallows. catches were low. water temps, low to mid 50's. water clarity low due to tannins.
could not see from channel marker to channel marker. felt our way out into the sound. land disappeared.
catches were low. pinfish of all sizes predominated. two trawls brought in a lot of big, heavy boring sponges with attendant juvenile stone crabs and portunus crabs. two pulls with bait seine on shell bars with heavy incoming current flowing netted a lot of young-of-the-year spot (Lei. xanthurus) around 1 inch in size. got a few juvenile flounder in trawl and 2 juvenile black sea bass. several miles offshore fog was so thick visibility was greatly reduced. no birds in sight. but water clarity improved to 2 meters. tide turned around 11:00.
last 2 offshore sets were on suwannee reef and half moon reef.
it was cold out in the fog offshore but as soon as we got close to the mainland, it warmed up. we all took our foul weather jackets off simultaneously.. fog disappeared and sun was out. the tannin-stained water mirrored the blue sky perfectly.
the state has set up new oyster aquaculture leases on half moon reef just offshore from east pass. the lease sites were crammed with birds - white and brown pelicans, cormorants, several different types of seagulls including my favorite, the herring gull! and ducks! they were all over the reef - landing, taking off, circling, resting, diving.. it was glorious. found myself thinking, it must have been this way hundreds of years ago. I soaked in the visuals.
on trip back to marina though east pass, a large, at least 8 ft., gator slid off a peat bank and disappeared in the river. earlier a smaller gator crossed the river in front of the boat. a few ospreys.
16:10, 74f at back door. sunny. unloaded groceries and feed. walked pup. turkey chili for supper and a much needed cup of coffee.
17:50, 72f, clear. waxing crescent moon showing above the farm house. did chores. walk with pup and guardian on cactus field boundary. scoping out lighterwood.
21:30, 67f. moon shining in back door. lots of stars. a lovely clear night. pup barking at armadillos. guardian barking at skunk..

08:10,low tide falling at CK. 57f, east wind, 3 knts. dense fog. sampling the fishes off the cedar keys. catches in 5 trawls and 3 sets with the bait seine were generally low, consisting mostly of mid-size pinfish and very small young-of-the-year spots. catch of the day was a huge, 8" bright yellow, very pregnant male seahorse. he was lovely. have never caught one that large. he was quickly measured and returned to the water!
water temperatures varied slightly according to location and depth of the water. 13-14.5C = 55.5-57f. water was clear to 2 meters offshore but turbid inshore. heard a loon but never saw one. ducks and brown pelicans were plentiful. a large pod of dolphins stayed with us during a trawl south of snake key. love hearing them blow. fog closed in during mid afternoon. very low visibility. navigated by gps back to fog-shrouded CK.
16:00, mid tide rising at #4 bridge. 62f, SW wind, 5 knts. oyster catchers out on the shell bars. white pelicans off to the east. disturbed a mature bald eagle scarfing down a possum on my way back to the farm.
16:30, 73f at back door. hazy. clouding up. quick walk with pup. got 1 egg. turkey chili for supper.
18:20, 68f, a haze. fed sheep and donkeys. hay to both. waxing crescent moon over sheep barn. pup wants to play. so does guardian.
21:20, 68f, dense fog. no stars or moon. quiet outside. good night everyone.

08:50, 60f, foggy. fed chickens. sheep back in barn; might let them in yard. long careful walk with pup through the cactus field. pines sprouting here and there. last years planted pines growing slowly. a tough environment but looks like most survived. pink azalea full of blooms!
13:30, 70f. overcast. gambled on a wash. it's on the line. let sheep into yard. burned yard trash and barely made a dent. them cabbage fans just keep dropping...
