05:40, 72F, full moon setting thorugh the oaks in the donkey woodlot. roosters up. brought guard dog in from her first entire night out with the sheep. dixie at back door.
08:30, 79F, fog and sun. passed 3 does and a yearling on the way to church. then, 3 road-killed young black wild hogs - scattered down the road before rosewood.
8:50, moon low tide at CK, some herons. SE wind 2-6 knts., sunny, low 80's. helped the choir out again today. they are desperate and I know most of the hymns.
10:50, still low tide in CK. more egrets out. manatee in the channel between CK and atsena otie. just a ripple at the sandspit. mature bald eagle busy on one of the road-kill hogs on the way home.
14:00, 92F, sunny, partly cloudy. put dogs up. the sheep are in the yard. reddog snoozing under magnolia.
17:30, 85F. no such thing as a breeze. put sheep back in fold. dogs out. no eggs. chickens are molting. their coop is full of feathers.
19:55: 78F, overcast. shrouded full moon rising over the workshop roof. guard dog out with sheep. pup in her crate. a new routine.

06:50, 70F, foggy. roosters up. dogs out. dixie at the back door. crows calling. raisin bran. wish I had some bacon ...
12:40, warm in cowtown. passed fields and fields of uprooted peanuts. hope they had a good harvest. the plants looked healthy. groceries, feed, fuel, and hay on the way back. lucked out and found the hay guy back at his hay barn feeding the dogs instead of at his hunting camp, it being bow season. got hay but no pears to be had, or pecans, this season. either part of a cycle, or the drought, or .. but there's acorns. the deer, hogs, and the sheep, are happy. I kinda wanted some pecans. and pears for cobbler. my tree had no pears either this year.

14:00, 92F, sunny. put sheep in barn for lamb sale. the young terrier was not invited but showed up anyway and actually listened and did a good job' she seemed to know what I wanted to do.
14:30. sold off the rest of my lambs. hallelujah!! got a decent price for them too. now there's just the 2 rams, a 4 year old and a yearling, and the breeding ewes. I can pamper them and they can take a well deserved rest for the next few months.
one deer gleaning acorns behind the workshop. pileated woodpecker calling. got no eggs.

11:00, high tide at CK. NE wind, 10-15 knts., low 80's. partly cloudy, partly sunny. enough wind in the boat yard to keep the bugs down. those little black flies that bite just showed up. mended, stored bait seine. washed damaged trawl from steinhatchee. a challenge! light chop at the sand spit. a porpoise and a bonnet-head shark chasing mullet by the airport.
16:20, low tide at #4 bridge. herons in marsh, 1 spoonbill. the woods are still full along 345 and the low pastures are ponds. the goat flock was out, with the llama..
16:50, 84F at the farm and there was a shower event. 0.2". laid down the dust. several deer gleaning acorns in the donkey woodlot.
19:40, 78F, mostly cloudy. pale sunset. moon visible. the chickens are not laying.
20:15, 75F. waxing gibbous moon high in the SE. gave the sheep a break tonight and brought the guard dog in. some stars.

07:30, 58F, a mist. sun's up. 2 deer browsing in the front yard. guard dog takes offense. 2 deer streaking though cactus field. crows calling.
10:50, high tide going out at CK. herons fishing. low 70's, north wind, 5-10. eagle visiting abandoned osprey nest in the pine across from lab. washed and dried the 2nd bait seine (needs mending) and a trawl (inspected and put away.)
15:30, low tide at #4 bridge. passed several pastures with large flocks of cattle egrets. army worms? locusts? preparing to migrate to south america?
16:10, 83F at the farm. clouding up. potted plants drying out.
19:20, 79F. fiery orange sunset that morphed into a neon red horizon. guard dog in sheep yard. bull dog pup does the chores with me. yellow dogs slouching around. waxing gibbous moon veiled by clouds.

08:05, 74F, fog. deer in pasture. red-shouldered hawk in the dead pine by sweetwater curve.
08:35, high tide at CK with egrets roosting in black mangroves. north wind, 3-7 knts. upper 70's. sang in the choir. they needed another warm body. a ripple at the sand spit. willets.
11:00, high tide going out at #4 bridge. herons in the tide. drove by a whole pasture full of cows lying down on the way home. except for a few cows belly deep in a pond. radar is clear.
14:10, 92F at back door with sun coming round. 84 on front porch facing south. mostly sunny. a slight breeze. dogs penned and the older sheep are in the yard. the younger ones were out in the pasture and didn't hear me call like the ones that were loafing under the cedars by the lane did. warm out but the house is comfortable. think I'll bring the rest of the sheep in the yard.
18:30. booted sheep out of the yard. the ram got into my bananas. dammit. set dogs free. got 1 broken egg. have a few smaller lambs left to sell. thinking of moving them to the falling-down-horse barn I need them to clean out the weeds in the corral so I can get on with my winter garden.

08:30, 70F, blue skies. slept right through the sun rising through the 2 workshop doors, through the mudporch and into the kitchen.. guess I needed the sleep. I can always catch the setting equinox sun pierce the mousehole in the kitchen door.. I live an interesting life..
roosters up. pups out. reddog tottering around. yellow dogs are making themselves scarce. donkeys hooting for hay. a normal saturday.
15:00, 86F, vague breeze. wash on the line. did some yard work. lawn needs mowing again. maybe next week. deer browsing the potato vine in the far back yard. a doe. young pups digging fox holes out by the citrus. got one egg. a lazy day with cardinals.
19:20, 80F. shocking pink sunset.
20:10, 79F, mostly clear skies. waxing half moon lighting the night. guard dog elected to come inside. yellow dogs out in front barking.
already september is 2/3rds gone. the days grow shorter; the quality and color of light is amber in the late afternoon. persimmons are almost ripe. acorns are dropping. grapes are almost gone. the yellow (blanket flower, hatpins, goldenrod, sunflower) and purple (loostrife, horse mint, elephant foot) fall flowers are showy along the roadside. I drag my feet. this is my favorite time of year. slow it down!

09;05, light fog at steinhatchee river. low 70's, NE wind, 5-10 knts. strong current in river. trawling 10 sites in the offshore seagrass meadows. visibility low. water looks like coffee. water temp, 27.5C = 81F. light chop. brought in all the usual fish that inhabit grass beds - pigfish, pinfish, file fish, flat fish, pipe fish, stingrays, a few, very few, scallops, and - a guitar fish! which is a type of skate. temps climbed to upper 70's. partly cloudy, partly sunny. flocks of ibis flying. dozens of fishing egrets scattered over a vast sandbank. cloud-scapes.
16:20, mid 80's at the farm. a deer in the donkey woodlot. unloaded feed. got 1 egg. dogs digging fox holes by the grapefruit tree.
a message from the vet said the turtle died.
19:10, 80F, setting sun extravagently orange with final rays that pierced the mousehole in the kitchen door. an equinox happening.

04:40, front coming in woke me up. a lot of lightning and heavy rains. went and checked on the old dog who is afraid of thunder, then went back to sleep.
06:50, 74F, overcast and drizzling. roosters up. took young dogs out before the next storm hit. stood under a cabbage palm frond while they did their business. good dogs.
08:30, storms rolling in from the west. looks like more out in the gulf. today, the sheep will get some hay in their barn since they hate going out in the rain. just have to wait for a lull.
10:30, 78F, drizzling. got 3" so far. chores done and dogs walked.
lots of puddles on the road. one farm on 345 had half their pasture flooded. pretty. it won't last.
rain drizzled and poured all the way to work.
11:00 medium low tide at CK. small flocks of spoonbills swishing through the flooding creeks. a wood stork. egrets. mid 70's drizzling. west wind, 10-20 knts. gusty.
plotted sites for next month. sometime it cleared and the sky was blue.

came across a wounded turtle on 345. back part of shell cracked. bleeding. brought turtle to lab.
10:30, low tide with egrets at CK. upper 70's, SE wind, 10-15 knts. sunny. office work. found a wildlife vet that mended turtles in jonesville.
15:00, high tide at #4 bridge. flock of ibis flying. heading for the vet with the turtle.
vet was optimistic but healing will take awhile.
17:00, three rain showers on the way back - jonesville, trenton, and bronson.
18:00, glad to be back at farm. dogs were glad too. no rain. mostly cloudy, humid. got 1 egg.

10:15, warm and sunny in hog town. another dr. visit but with good news. the last scan was normal. no more visits to shands for awhile.. next year, even!
visited the archaeology lab and discussed the studies being conducted at lower suwannee wildlife refuge. exciting things going on.. finally the shell rings and shell mounds in this area are being examined with some dates going back 4,000 years.
16:00 heading home with storm clouds to the west. drove thorugh 3 large showers going back to the farm. no rain at the farm, though. archer, bronson, and otter creek got the rain..
19:30, 80F, partly cloudy, mist forming. got 1 egg. most of the gold comets I bought a few weeks ago have survived, so far, in the stock tanks. guard dog in sheep pasture.

05:40, 70F, clear. waning crescent moon in low east with venus high above. orion up there! and jupiter. great early morning sky! roosters up. dixie at back door..
09:00, high tide at suwannee. upper 70's, NE wind, 15 knts. choppy. water temp, 26C, we were in our smallest boat, the mullet which was newly re-commissioned after extensive repairs. her frames were soft. the boat yard reframed and reglassed her and glassed in the old center console from the late fire-ball, so now we have more storage and a picking table.. catches were moderate in the bait seine with the usual crowd showing up.
our first set with the 600' seine netted over 50 young of the year, YOY, black drum, 6-8" long.. cute. they really are. and then the stirring cable broke. it was an interesting ride back to the ramp. saw one dolphin. some pelicans and ospreys. a big ray jumped and splashed down at east pass. turtles sunning on snags in the river.
frothy brown waters at east pass where the incoming tide meets the outgoing suwannee.
15:30, 80's at the farm. sunny. unloaded feed. a doe and yearling in the donkey woodlot. pup in sheep water again. bad dog..
16:30, call from hay guy. going to get 10 bales. wanted to take the pups but.. she smells like a swamp and is soaking wet..
17:16 unloaded hay.
19:50, cooling off. dusk. guard dog barking at 2 bucks, one being 4-pts., the other, larger, being 8 points, and a doe crossing the sheep pasture. 4 pts. trailed behind 8 pts. following the doe.. if the smaller buck got too close, the larger one would chase it back.

05:50, 72F, mostly cloudy. no stars. waning crescent moon, a thin bowl, in the pines by the workshop. roosters quiet. reddog is barking.
I was in the field 11 years ago and did not hear about the other infamous day until I got back to the lab late in the afternoon.
08:05, high tide coming in at CK. upper 70's, overcast. NE to SE wind, 12-16 knts. choppy with a few white caps. water, 27C, 80F. sampled around corrigans and atsena otie with the 600 ft. seine. varied catches except for the bait fish which were the same in most pulls. young of the year trout, YOY mackeral, flounder, young sharks, croaker, 2 very large black drum, 60 cownose rays, and the usual atlantic rays, hard-head and gaff top-sail catfish, were scattered throughout the sets. the cownose-ray/black drum catch was tiring. we got splashed all up. spoonbills and egrets roosting in the black mangroves. a bald eagle in a pine. gulls diving for the baitfish as they got measured and thrown overboard. a pelican visit. choppy, windy, gray, but extraordinaryly beautiful. sargassum washing up on the beaches. got some more hickory nuts to plant in the cactus field from that pignut hickory out on cedar point.
15:30, low 80's. low tide at #4 bridge. mud flats just getting exposed. 1 spoonbill and some egrets working the tide.
18:20, low 80's, overcast. no breeze. got 2 eggs. doctoring a sick ewe lamb. a lot of the flock have pasty stools from their fresh grass diet. their water consumption is half of what they drink when they're eating hay.
20:40, 76F, fog/haze. some stars showing. enough mosquitos so that you don't want to linger in one place too long.

09:10 high tide going out on suwannee sound but it's neap tide so today it's mostly high tide. mid-80's, NE wind, 5-10 knts. choppy offshore with 1 ft. seas, light chop inshore. finished the trawling for september in the CK universe. water temp, 29C, 84F. caught all the usual fishes - pig and pin fish, pipe fish, flat fish, file fish, toad fish, and 1 young electric ray, which was very carefully measured. sparse birdlife - gulls. a few fishing dolphin. lovely out there. when we left in the morning it almost felt like fall.
15:20, lowish tide in the backwaters with spoonbills. heading to cow town for supplies.
17:10, sunny, partly cloudy. low 80's at the farm. let dogs out. unloaded truck. got 2 eggs.
20:20, 78F, calm, misty. slight NE breeze. stars out, could vaguely see milky way from sheep pasture. brought a chair out there. getting ready for winter skies.

o6:40, 75F, overcast and foggy. waning crescent moon barely visible over the house. a big noisy storm blew over around 03:00. thunder woke me up. rainy, windy, lightning. went back to sleep and got woken up again..
roosters up and crowing. damp out.
08:30, foggy. 6 ft. alligator in the road by the cypress head just north of sweetwater curve on 345.
I put on the brakes and it swirled around and lit into the swamp. it was young and still a little colorful. its tail was brown and tan striped. it stretched from the yellow line - almost to the edge of the road.. the woods are full. the reptiles are crawling.
last week, the son of a friend was cutting saw palmetto berries and got struck by a diamond-back. 4 days in ICU. he's much better now.
be careful. reptiles are crawling.
08:50, medium tide with spoonbills at CK. low 80's, light and variable breezes. church was good. sandspit flooded and flat. town quiet. overcast. brunch with a friend overlooking atsena otie. I had shrimp hash. she had eggs benedict. good view, good food..
15:20, 88F at the back door. overcast but bright. thunder to the east. a doe in cactus/dog fennel field. filled a wash tub for lil pup to play in. wrens are singing. pileated woodpecker in the donkey woodlot. got 1 egg. rain gauge shows almost 2" of rain in the past few days. most of it came from last night - over an inch, looking at the dog bowls and buckets.

so here it is. one whole year of weather, wildlife, and farmlife, except for about 3 days when I couldn't get on-line.. complete with births, deaths, heat waves, drought, freezes, rain, storms, trauma, and joy!

08:10, high tide at CK with spoonbills flying. low 80's, south wind 10-15 knts. storm clouds all around. rainbow over the scrub. field trip canceled. rats..
11:00, tide going out, oyster bars exposed. spoonbills and egrets hunting through the marsh. rain headed south. drove to shell mound to see if archaelogists were around but no.. they'd already gone out to one of the islands. shrimp lady was out so I bought a pound of shrimp.
15:20, mid 80's. mowed the side and back yards. hot with mosquitos. have to worm the dogs. shrimp were good and some are left for tomorrow. no eggs.
20:50, 79F, fog/mist. faint stars. mosquitos. wormed dogs when I fed them. young dog inside already.

05:20, 73F, fog. venus very bright over workshop. all quiet. roosters silent.. yellow dogs on patrol. waning half moon in the SE.
08:40, rain/fog on the suwannee river. overcast. low 80's. variable breezes. low catches in trawls and boat sets with the bait seine. river temp = 27C, 80F. drizzled/rained all day. we put the bimini top up, then got out the foul weather jackets. alligator swam the river. 2 bald eagles in a dead cypress. a fawn on the banks of east pass that turned and disappeared into the swamps. tupelos turning red. a few climbing astors.
15:20, 83F at the farm. overcast and damp. mosquitos. drained the water tank. got better pressure! got 2 eggs. fixed fence, temporarily.
20:10, 79F. partly cloudy. mosquitos. dog wanted in.
the field is the only reality.

07:20, 73F. the sun a glowing orange ball on the horizon. roosters serenade it.
08:50, 78F, partly cloudy. crows crowing. a 6 pt. buck and a doe in the cactus field. they took off (usually they're not this wary..) when the dogs and I started down the lane. or the doe just saw an opportunity to get away.
10:30, medium low neap tide just turning at CK. a few egrets and herons in the marsh and a juvenile pelican resting on the railing on #4 bridge. mid 80's. SW wind, 10-12 with gusts to 15 knts. sunny, partly cloudy. a light chop. oyster bars slowly disappearing beneath the incoming tide. the osprey nest seems to have no occupants now except the 2 doves (eurasian collared) perched on the nest rim. proofed data.
16:00, high tide at # 4 bridge. a few egrets in the marsh. swamp maples are starting to turn red. and the cypress are getting rusty.
20:10, 79F. got 2 eggs. . 4 or 5 deer in the pines to the north. pink sunset. guard dog out in pasture watching the calves in the south pasture. on the sheep side of the fence. mosquitos bad all over.
21:10, 78F, mostly cloudy. guard dog wants in.. probably wants to finish her supper.
23:00, waning gibbous moon rises over the cactus field, orange and spooky in the fog.

08:10, 77F, waning gibbous moon setting. partly cloudy, roosters up. quick walk with the pups down the lane. hay to donkeys. no food or water after midnight. going for another scan. a few more of these and I should glow in the dark..
17;30, spent most of the day in hog town in frigid a.c. glad to be back in warm muggy 80's, partly cloudy, hardly a breeze. a tree fell on the yard/donkey woodlot fence. mashed a large section.. dammit. a must fix item.
20:00, 80F, partly cloudy except in the NW. cirrus streaking out of the NW. dog's out with sheep.

18:10, 82F, partly cloudy although it's pouring out on rt. 19 around gulf hammock. (returning from a quick trip to so. florida for a wedding. the weather was mild.. pleasant.)
sheep in the field, yellow dogs under the house. pups glad to see me. got 2 eggs. mosquitos still bad. have to wear 2 shirts.

o6:30, 74F. foggy. almost dawn. roosters crowing. scrambled eggs and mushrooms for breakfast.
13:20, 86F, sunny, some clouds. boiled shrimp for lunch. wash drying on the line. dogs were in the wrong place at the wrong time again and are stuck in the mud porch. mosquitos remain awful. weeding out the kitchen..
16:20. visit from friends. we take the pups for a walk. brief shower.
18:10, 83F, slight breeze from east. sunny. got 3 eggs - 1 pecked. mosquitos awful all the time. took in mostly dry wash.
20:50, 81F, orange moon rising over the workshop. a few cicadas chirping.
